A few weeks ago we ripped up some trees and shrubs along the edge of our woods. Today we're hooking up the HLA Debris Grapple to our John Deere 333G Skid Steer to move all of that clutter into one neat pile. Let's see if this is the right type of grapple for the job, and how easy it is to use (or not). This might be the best grapple design I've ever used. The HLA Debris Grapple has replaceable Kverneland tines along the bottom, a solid back plate for pushing, and independent top jaws made from hardened steel to take a punch. A good multipurpose grapple for logs, brush, manure, hay, and more!

One thought for what do do with the slash type debris is what the British call a "dead hedge". Essentially, you pile the material along a perimeter line you want to close off. They will often plant into the debris to develop a living hedgerow. I've done this to provide some protection to one of my nursery areas from deer pressure.

Burning the unwanted debris is the standard scheme here in SC. Usually I have a cleared area away from everything and let the fire rip. I have some burn piles that burn for weeks. Just keep adding stuff to them. Burn pits are nice but down here they will get too much water in them.

At the farm I work at when we clear out a tree line we use the skid steer and dig a big not deep hole and put all the brush in and then burn it with diesel fuel and sit there all night some time it will go for weeks but ones it’s mostly burnt we cover it all back up like it wasn’t there

In pa most farmers dig out a burn pit. This way the fir can be contained. Then can burn brush and stumps. We do notify the local fire department to alert a burn pit is going. In case someone calls the fire in. The small pieces we can run thru the pto chipper.

That’s a nice grapple but I have tried different kinds and I’ll have to stick with my clam shell grapple preferably an Armstrong. I like being able to open it up and back drag with it. But that one worked pretty good for what you were doing. As usual great video. 👍

Great video! As far as the brush issue, I have two words...burn pile. Chippers just create a whole lot of extra work. I was considering a similar grapple from WorkSaver before I settled on the one I got. It was a WorkSaver manure/silage fork with a single grapple lid on it. I liked the solid backplate of the manure fork but I wanted the grapple lid to close tighter. Outback Wraps come to the rescue again! I love my Outback Wraps!

I like it. The first grapple I ever saw being used was with pallet forks on the bottom and a grapple on the top. The thing I loved about that was the length of the pallet forks made it great multi use, another one I saw had basically a rock bucket on the bottom but again it was long enough on the bottom about as long as this one. A lot of the grapples I see are very short on the bottom like they were designed to pick up a single log, having an extra length on the bottom do use as a rake or a bucket seems pretty important to me and grapples are becoming very popular but some of them are very short and that’s just a big limit, I’m sure it’s cheaper to build you can use cheaper materials but I really like the length on this one and how you were talking about you can use it as a rake, I’m sure that also gives it a lot more support underneath the load instead of using the grapple and the grip to hold everything and aid in the lifting of the load.

Courtney, the only thing I can think of to make your situation worse will be 12 inches of snow. I hope the weather is good to you. The bucket stays on my tractor but I always look forward to using my grapple. We've recently had some bad weather that caused several trees to fall. What isn't cut into firewood will be put into a ditch that is washing out. That should to stop the erosion. The Cedar trees that fell, those branches, will be the real blessing for that.

Morning Courtney. Good vid today. Me too - I had to do the same thing - got some of that wrap and bundled the grapple hoses together - I highly recommend doing it - inexpensive but very effective at stopping the hoses from swinging around freely and getting caught. A thought (and sorry if you have already done this) but being that I think you sell a couple different styles of grapples, perhaps a video comparing them to help folks try to decide which grapple style is best for their needs might be helpful for folks. You have the property there and I am sure you can do a great demonstration of each type ( claw, single jaw, double jaw, root rake, bush etc) with real life demonstrations of each on your property. Just a thought. Have a good one!

I have just 5 acres of field, 5 of forest and I need at least 2 burns for brush every year... 20 feet in diameter and as tall as I can stack it. To be fair, I try to maintain my woods like a park, but with your acreage there is only so much habitat you can make. I'm currently saving my pennies for a pto chipper which could definetly limit the size of burn piles, but we always make our bonfires a party and invite friends and family. Best of luck, and keep the videos coming!

Nothing more fun than a skid steer! I wouldn't drag around the brush. Waste of time and fuel. Make little piles as you go. I only move firewood size stuff to one pile and only when the ground is frozen so i dont track up the place and you dont mud up the equipment. I burn in the winter when we get a decent snow. Love your new property! Did you score a buck this year?

Nice Video as usual. As for the brush piles, if you were ambitious you could get a big chipper and make mulch for your property. Otherwise make a few big piles and check with local township, fire or non-emergency police dept about your burning restrictions. I have similar situation cleaning up a property and I just simply have to make a call on day of burning to alert them not to send fire dept if someone calls it in or you pay for them coming out. Then just have a big weenie roast or bonfire :) I'm letting mine dry out a bit more with the sub-zero temps and plan on burning before spring now that we have adequate snowfall. I think you could bungee cord that excess hose up to the handles on that grapple. Trial and Error.

You know what free advice is worth. Those full trees you are pushing off, I would get on the excavator and chop them into three sections. Much easier to get a good stack of materials and push them off. Every run you push is wear and tear on the machine. I believe go bigger on the push and reduce the amount of runs will be more efficient and reduce wear and tear on the skid steer.

@Good Works Tractors - If you want to make fill dirt for your property, mulch up the wood and spread it out. If you want to add nurturance into your soil for future grass or for future crops, start a fire and get it to burn hot for a short while. Then smother the burning woodpile with dirt. Leave the dirt over the fire for a few days up to a week and add dirt as smoke breaks through the dirt. This low oxygen fire under the dirt creates biochar from the wood which is better than chemical fertilizers. If you just want the woodpile out of your way, then burn it and spread out the ash until all the remnants are gone.

I need a hose hanger for my grapple. I got my grapple used an it didn't come with one. I've crushed that hose once or twice, or more. 😁 I bought a used woodchipper to take care of dead trees and the like. A good one, not a chuck and duck. I've got some good use out of it. It made a pretty large chip pile. But, if it's too small to be chipped, then it goes into compost. Too big, goes in to a log pile that may be turned into furniture one day.

Brush piles make the best habitat for all sorts of critters. Place them all where they can be burned safely over the next couple years or so that way you will have ready made bonfires for friends and family…… just add diesel & lite 🔥 instant party! Also after stacking the brush up and before moving it, mash down on the pile with the bucket….that will tend to lock it together and you will lose less of the small materials

For the benefit of your viewers, it seems that chipping takes FOREVER if you have a large area of land to clear. With a large homestead, it is much more efficient to burn if the local ordinances allow. To ease the process, I find that multiple piles, spaced well apart, and allowed to season for a few months allow for the most complete burn with minimal effort.

Court, That brush is probably some of that bad invasive brush that will just re-grow where ever you dump it. I think you would want to burn it to permanently dispose of it. Winter is the best time to get rid of it while its wet and cold. I would pick a natural pit or depression in your field so you can control your fire and good riddens to that stuff:)
@lilredcummins
@lilredcummins 2 жыл бұрын
So why are the hoses so long? At 9:58 when in the full dump position, it looks like the hoses are about 2 feet (or more) too long. The grapple sure works nicely, especially when you are pushing brush on the ground into a pile. I run all of the brush and trees less than 2" down, through a chipper. It decomposes much faster.
