If I recall correctly, the Max Headroom show was about a dystopian world where a reporter makes powerful enemies and gets sucked into a TV which turns him into a vengeful talking head who helps the heroes resist corporate control of the media. So there could have been some satire or protest angle to all of this. I also am a fan of the SNES Shadowrun soundtrack btw.

Max headroom started as an advertising mascot for New Coke, it somehow morphed into a TV show.
@deepspire3 жыл бұрын
@@michaelcowanmichaelcowan969 No it didn’t. The Coca-Cola advertising was in 1988. Max Headroom started in early 1987 as a British television film, “Max Headroom: 20 Minutes into the Future.” Later that year came the series, and then after that, Coca-Cola entered the picture.
@michaelcowanmichaelcowan9693 жыл бұрын
@@deepspire incorrect. The New Coke commercials featuring Max Headroom came out in 1985, the US series came out in 87. Any argument otherwise is moot, as my reply is still correct and if max did exist prior to his appearance in US commercials and his US show it would be highly unlikely to have been seen in the US, and therefore not an influence on the hack.

exactly what i was thinking! its totally plausible to me that J and K could have worked with someone on the inside to pull this off. just because the culprit(s) would have had to have inside knowledge doesnt automatically mean J and K are completely ruled out. this is, of course, assuming the original reddit post is even true, since anyone can go on reddit and post whatever bullshit they want for internet points.

Statute of limitations has long expired. 2) The idea that it came from the Chicago BBS community is a good one. 3) LOTS of Chicago BBS’ers claimed credit in the first 24 hours, until they all realized this was a serious crime. 4) It was certainly an associate of Dr. Ripco. A message board at the time had a technical question related to the intrusion. 5) The number of locations this could be done from are very limited, but densely populated. 6) Small point: It’s pronounced luh-GRAYNGE :) But a good video.

Hey man, good video. But I just wanted to say that the Reddit story seems fake. He claims someone told him to "watch Channel 11 that night." So he did, and he saw the incident live. Allegedly. The problem with that is, the attack was aimed for Channel 9 (WGN-TV). That's why "Max" picks on Chuck Swirsky, and "World's Greatest Newspaper" (WGN). That's where the attack first happened, but WGN engineers quickly changed frequencies and stopped it, they didn't even manage to make the sound work. So after that failed attempt, they went for Channel 11, where they got much more airtime, with sound and everything, and they could play the whole skit (which was still talking about Channel 9, even though it was on Channel 11). That's the one on YT which we all know and love. Had the redditor met the guys who did it beforehand, surely they would have told him to watch Channel 9, not 11, as that was the aim of the prank. That is just one of the holes in his story, which seems like the typical Reddit lying for attention. It literally feels like he picked apart every detail of the video and built a story around it. Max says "my brother has the other one." He knew two brothers. The tape ends with someone spanking him? He had a dirty sense of humor. Max says "ooooh" all the time? One of the brothers also said "oooh" all the time. Just smells like a load of shit to me.

@RMoribayashi6 жыл бұрын
The equipment *_did_* exist in the wild! Ham radio operators were regularly transmitting analog television even in the 80's. Finding the studio to transmitter link frequencies could have been as easy as looking it up in a book from Radio Shack used with police scanners. Alternatively a scanner or UHF ham radio could find the point to point link. These links are not scrambled and can be overridden by a fairly weak signal if it's close enough to the receiver or using a directional antenna, a small thing at those frequencies.
@blackmagic69746 жыл бұрын
This. It's not impossible to build equipment from scratch either anyway, and it's easier to override a signal than one would think.The FCC regulates things, if you just wanted to do a short illegal broadcast, there is nothing stopping you from cranking up the power since you're breaking the law anyway. TV stations are limited in the power that they're allowed to put out.
@RMoribayashi6 жыл бұрын
Ove course they didn't have to override the high powered main transmitter, only the link between the studio and the transmitter. That link is usually between 5 and 100 watts depending on the distance. A 1 watt amateur TV transmitter could easily do it just by being within a couple of blocks of the transmitter tower. Since both WTTW and WGN use the Willis Tower the pirate didn't even have to move between the two incidents.
@RMoribayashi5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Like that would ever hap
@clarissamcpigeon78575 жыл бұрын
There's another conspiracy theory around all of this. The FCC absolutely knew how the hack was done and where it came from. The reason they claimed NOT to know was very simple: the airwaves in those days were shockingly insecure and they didn't want to encourage copycats or enable serious crime by stating how it was done and what equipment was used. This was just a harmless silly prank which made a very important statement. Think of the real and serious damage that could be done otherwise.
@RMoribayashi5 жыл бұрын
@@clarissamcpigeon7857 It was still insecure in the days of analog cable. Comcast in Philadelphia used a normal outdoor TV antenna to recieve the signal from an Allentown station 60 miles away. When the station went off the air on weekend nights another channel 39 from Long Island, New York over 100 miles away would show up on cable channel 39 but only when the weather was right. That ment it was probably relaying anything strong enough on that channel. It would have been easy for someone to transmit a signal on TV channel 39 that was stronger than the distant signals from either Long Island or Allentown with just a TV extender from Radio Shack, a VCR and a small outdoor antenna. If they had made it portable and transmitted from a car they may even avoided the FCC doppler direction finding vans.

I wouldn't dismiss J and K like that. Keep in mind the fact that the people who work for broadcasting companies aren't necessarily slaves to their jobs and may have an interest in electronics and programming outside of it. It's possible for any number of people who worked there to find themselves networking with the guys who actually did this just by conversing with fellow enthusiasts, which provides the window of opportunity for either a collaboration or the exchange of whatever information would have been necessary.
@OBrasilo6 жыл бұрын
The problem with the story is that K told the guy to "watch Channel 11" (WTTV) but that was the backup plan that was only put into place after the WGN (Channel 9) intrusion was stopped. Unless of course, K talked to the guy after the failed WGN attempt.
@themoviedealers6 жыл бұрын
We don't know that it was a backup plan, they might have been planning to hack both channels all along.
@johnfrancisdoe15636 жыл бұрын
Somefurfag Also, amateurs at the time might randomly acquire disused pro equipment that wasn't supposed to exist outside the broadcast or telecoms industry, and would officially deny all knowledge of such movement of gear. Thus a nerd with systems "functioning and non-functioning" piled high may easily have had some supposedly destroyed broadcast gear in the pile.
@theapexsurvivor95386 жыл бұрын
OBrasilo channel 11 was the main target, channel 9 was the test. They had to be sure that they could successfully hack a major station and they needed to run tests regarding audio and video, but they also needed to avoid getting caught, so they couldn't use the same channel twice as it would be too heavily monitored the second time, so they used 9 as basically a diagnostics test and to get a rough estimate of the security of the stations, and then they hit 11 with everything they had.

I still think J and K did it. “Just watch channel 11 tonight.” How the hell could someone predict something like that? They probably knew someone who had access to whatever “inside” technology they needed and also had a vendetta against Chuck Swirsky and “the world’s greatest newspaper nerds,” and that combined with J and K’s technological knowledge makes it absolutely possible that they did it.

Black Magic I suppose it’s possible for those two people to have planned on both pretending to know J and K. I don’t think we’ll ever know tho :(

I swear my uncle would and could have been that guy. He had knowledge and owned all this strange hacking technology of the 80's and was a super smart but odd guy. He totally would have pulled a prank like this. And he lived in Chicago his whole life.

This is true. Socrates practically invented it. Hell, Diogenes got one of the most epic trollings in history. He said to Alexander the Great's face, "You're blocking my sun" and lived.

as of 1992 the Headroom Hacker of 1987 would be safe by law "In the absence of a specific statute of limitations, the default federal limitations period of five years applies." in the United States the first cyberpunk series Max Headroom broke into the broadcasts to mock the mind-controlling media & ended 1988

i always see people saying this is creepy but to me its just really funny not really creepy at all (and i'm not trying to sound like a big tough guy by saying this lol).. I mean its seems like to me that the people who did this were just some guys like fucking around in their garage.. obviously they knew what they were doing tho.. I'm thinking it was probably technicians or people who worked for the station or another station.. people who know about all this kinda stuff. I don't really see anything sinister!

Cole Studiman I think the reason why it creeped people out is because nobody knows who done it and it’s unknown.
