Exactly, I feel a lot of "cursed images" are not "cursed" because they seem too intentional, the cursed images that we definitely see as cursed images are ones that are from somewhere unknown, something undefined, somethinh in between what we know and what we don't know and not just some weird meme. As the other guy said, Uncanny Valley is the best example of this. But now the whole thing as other mass-exposure subreddits, has devolved into a new type of meme culture full of shit. I wonder whether or not this has a bearing in my impression of meme culture if there is a "meme culture".

I feel like part of what makes a cursed image is the lighting. There's rarely any shadows or highlights in a cursed image; the lighting is pretty much uniform for the entire picture.

To me, in order for an image to count as a "cursed image", it has to horrify or disturb, but in a subtle or vague way. If the image is unsettling and you can't quite put your finger on why, is unsettling or disturbing in an unconventional way, or is overall disturbing but composed of elements that wouldn't normally be disturbing by themselves, I'd say it counts as "cursed".

A cursed image feels like the image has an innate “unnerving sense of something being out of place” and automatically invokes concerned thoughts/ideas on how/when/where/why that image was made. Plenty of genuine cursed images feel cursed, haunted by the individuals within the image, by those that made it, or by people or forces surrounding the origin of the contents of the photo. A good cursed image makes you feel like something is looking at you looking at the image. The definition of a cursed image is obtuse and vague, but the concept of fear is universal.

I think what makes an image cursed is not only the content of the image, but the way it's shot as well. The lighting and framing in that farmer pic make the viewer feel uncomfortable, as a cursed image should. Cursed images have an energy to them that's really hard to describe, but should at the very least make its viewer uncomfortable as can be.

I would have to say that I always thought the “rules” of the cursed images subreddit were basically that the image shown had to make you question the context of how the image happened, why it happened, where it happened, what happened, and otherwise just have no explanation for any of that from the image alone. It can be made up of random components put together, it can be what most would consider a coherent image, but it just needs to have no clear-cut context for why the events in the image exist. These types of things can be funny, creepy, unsettling, repulsive, etc. Everyone had their own definition of what a “cursed image” may be, but I would say the above idea needs to be the basis of any Cursed Image.

Cursed images remind me of that uncanny valley feeling or liminal spaces. Uncomfortable or juxtaposed images & concepts that just don't feel right. Like they shouldn't be real or they mash up the familiar with the unfamiliar.

Personally, I think an image is cursed when your gut reaction to it is “Oh… oh no.” Not freaking out, not laughing, just resigned dread. This story also reminds me of r/animemes, but in reverse.

@@sergiorubens8475 Basically the mods started treating the term “trap” as transphobic, when they had been cool with it for ages. It was a big mess with the members arguing it wasn’t fair and that they weren’t using it in a derogatory manner, while the mods fought back with shadowbans. The mods eventually stated that they went too far, but that they would not go back on any of the changes. Some members did some digging and found that the mods were bragging about doing it on r/traa, basically bragging about tearing apart their community. TL;DR: The mods were white-knighting a group that already had a bad opinion of the community by tearing the community apart.

I was practicing eye contact with this video, and while I was staring deeply into the windows of your soul I blinked in perfect sync with one of your video cuts where you switched from leaning to the right (your left) to the left (your right) and I had a very brief moment of "Oh my god what the fuck just happened?" and just as quickly as that feeling arrived, it had dissipated when I saw you do another cut and switch back from leaning to the left, back to leaning to the right. Figured I may share that little moment with you.

For me, whether an image is cursed or not, usually depends on the background/setting. A guy with tomatoes is nbd, but when he's standing in what looks like a Backroom, that's when it gets creepy.

i remember being subscribed to r/cursedvideos and that subreddit was just an endless cycle: good content, then new users posting shitty content, then moderators stepping in to make the content good again. haven't been on reddit for a while so idk how that subreddit is doing now and i can't be bothered to check

I always thought an image is officially considered as cursed when it appears like it was "tampered" by an unseen supernatural entity to a point that it naturally looks creepy as opposed to people posing & setting things up so it looks intentionally creepy.
