More evidence supporting this theory is in a simple detail: the Great Devourer’s eyes. They’re a pinkish purple color, which in Ninjago is nearly always associated with evil. The overlord’s power, reborn Garmadon’s power, and the eyes of oni are all purple. That’s always the main color scheme for evil in Ninjago: black and purple. If the Devourer is controlled by the overlord, then it would make sense why it’s eyes would be an unnatural pink-purple color. We even see with Wojira in sea bound that it’s not hard to control a world destroying beast, as Kalmar did it easily and changed the color of Wojira’s eyes.

I personally feel that there is even more forces at play here, bearing in mind that Garmadon was born representing the Oni half of the First Spinjitsu master and is the master of destruction. I think your theory has a lot of merit, but the fact that Garmadon, representing destruction, ended up being turned against his brother to recreate the endless conflict between creation and destruction/dragon and oni is also, for me, too coincidental

They aren’t the same, but they are similar. Dark matter just makes everyone a brainwashed servant of the Overlord, think of it as a general use tool, it can infect anyone. The venom basically takes corruptible traits that someone has and intensifies them, for Garmadon, this trait was the element of destruction/his oni side, it was likely made specifically for Garmadon.

3:12 I have a strong belief that the reason why the Overlord used the Devourer to target Garmadon over Wu was because of his elemental inheritance. Let’s not forget that Garmadon inherited the element of Destruction. The Overlord probably knew about this and thought he was a better target since the elemental ability is more susceptible to corruption than Wu’s element of Creation.

Spoilers ahead: It was confirmed in Ninjago Crystalized that the Overlord did make Garmadon, apparently also Garmadon's later Oni powers were gifted by the Overlord, so I think the Overlord did indeed corrupt the Devourer, and made the snake bite Garmadon, which would unleash his Oni side and thus allow him access to his powers. This also explains why the Overlord was waiting for Garmadon as he expected Garmadon to find the dark island eventually.

The overlord needs family councling fr. He can't keep convincing unstable people to work for him by fueling thier narcissiom and fake promises, the amount of emotional mayhem Garmadon went through in the traditional finale (Lloyed climbs a building to kick the overlord's ass while avoiding stone warriors) shows how terrible his behavior is. Also children online with large egos tend to potray themselves as big mighty powerful mystical beings so they can feel like they are stronger than they actually are, so naming yourself "The Overlord" and causing a headache for our heros when and whenever possible just shows how bad your relationship with your parents really is. Zane's father died after teaching him all he can teach, giving him purpose before he left him to the real world. Unagamai (the video game villan) just needed somebody to talk him out of it, he wanted revenge for being abandoned and he didin't care what trouble he caused along the way. Jay saved him by giving him much needed therapy and aknowlaging how hard life is and that he too had parental issues, and that we're all in this together. A simple exestential conversation with the overlord is what I believe would have been best, he can still change if the people around him will snap him back to reality. Ps. There is a theory of the Overlord being Half Oni half Dragon like the first spinjitzu master (This can be supported by the Overlords form in the finale of S2 being a Dragon, and at the end of S3 where his 'true' form looked like an Oni . Technically, the evil garmadon also “died” in season 2 after Lloyd’s battle with the overlord. There’s two Garmadons. The all dark one, and the good one. Harumi asked for “Lord Garmadon” which is the all dark and evil one rather “Sensei Garmadon.”

A lot of people say it’s Garmadon’s Oni Side it actually isn’t. Dark matter and Darkness is different from destruction and Garmadon seems to be the only Oni/Darkness being with Red eyes while both Overlord and Omega have magenta eyes. However no it’s not Garmadon’s Oni Side as he doesn’t have horns or magenta eyes. In Crystalized he has an Oni form with magenta eyes. Though Garmadon in regular form looks Oni he’s not I mean he is he’s Half Oni but also Half Dragon but still it’s not his Oni Side. That’s the thing though Garmadon couldn’t unleash his Oni powers or anything because he was corrupted by Darkness of the Overlord and he cared for his son and his family he admitted he hated being evil but couldn’t control it he has no hate like an Oni or anything like that. The point is Garmadon we see in seasons 8-10 and now Crystalized is the Oni that was unleashed for Garmadon which is why he can use these powers now because he’s Ridded of the venom he’s now corrupted by his Oni side which why he hates everything now because hatred is an Oni thing.
