This reminded me of my Orthodox Christian childhood, reading all the stories from the Bible and lives of saints, I was always eager to learn more about them. I admire the wisdom of Sariputta, and his journey from nihilism to awakening is such a relatable story even today. Also thanks for providing insight on his "afterlife" as an influence on future Buddhist writings.

Yah he was named as treasurer of dharma because of his capacity of memory. And thats how they done 1 samghayana after buddhas parinirvana because he was heard every and each sutta buddha taught. Because he was buddhas personal caretaker and he was asked 5 favor from buddha when he was appointed as caretaker of buddha(lot similar to a privet secretary ) and one was " the dharma buddha taught or discuss with anyone anyware must be teach to ananda. Thats how he got to know that dharma.

@@DougsDharma There's an aspect of the story of Buddha's para nirvana that doesn't make sense to me. The Buddha blames Ananda for not catching Buddha's hints that if Ananda had asked, the Buddha could have stuck around a lot longer. The exchange reads harsh to me. I don't buy it. If the Buddha had wanted to stick around, he could have, don't blame Ananda.

@@DougsDharmai hate asking this, because few scholars seem to cross train in Pali, Sanskrit, and Chinese (and Gandhari familiarity), but is this part in say the Chinese agamas? Analayo is one of the few who does this. It makes sense it's a later addition. Why was it added? -- I'd say to show followers that although the Buddha died reportedly of food poisoning, he really was like a god and could have decided to live for a long time. Why didn't he stick around and teach the Dharma for a 1000 years? Something or someone must be blamed. Like a cliche mystery, the attendant did it. Ananda.

I think the painting of the poster of this Video was drawn by a Sinhalese Buddhist author call Mr. Gayān Chānuka who is a passionate Buddhist lay teacher has written series of Sinhalese books about Buddha's 80 main Arahat disciples and in those books he himself has drawn it's cover page. One thing I'm am still trying to understand are the boddhisattvas, which I understand are somewhat like deities in Mahayana...but are they based on the actually existing disciples, such as Sariputra? For instance, I am not sure if Avalokitesvara is a mythical being or not because the Heart Sutra frames the discussion as one between him and Sariputra.

From my understanding, the whole Mahayana universe isn't something to be taken as a physical system but it's meant to elucidate ideas or concepts that point towards what the teachings are trying to get at. Since the teachings are beyond conceptualization one cannot think their way to understanding them so they used supernatural concepts and entities to illustrate these states one is supposed to attain or habitualize. Granted, I suppose it also depends on who you ask and the society that they're apart of if they want to take these illustrative ideas as real or not.

Yes I mean it's kind of hard to give a definitive answer to this question. From my own perspective, indeed Avalokitesvara is a mythical being who is a metaphor for, or an expression of, compassion. It's rather like Māra in early Buddhism is such a being who is a metaphor for craving and death. But there will of course be many different interpretations here, and some will interpret such beings differently.

@@DougsDharma DT Suzuki in his book "Introduction to Zen Buddhism" discusses the differences between the beautifully illustrative metaphors and allegories used in India and the pragmatic directness used in China. Imagination allows us to transcend common everyday conceptualization sometimes but when one isn't born into such an imaginative culture it really makes it difficult for people to understand what's "real" from the teachings. Having historical context is incredibly important when it comes to understanding Buddhism. All of the stories have serious teachings in them but are incredibly difficult to expound in everyday language. The fact that zen is so direct is a pretty impressive feat.

In Tibetan Buddhism it is said there are three or four levels of meaning like external, internal, secret and most secret meaning of the same word. So, according to this tradition, Avalokiteshvara was a disciple of the Buddha and is now a Bodhisatva or a Buddha living in a pure realm like Maitreya is supposed to be now in Tushita pure realm, from a inner point of view could be the embodyment of the compassion of all Buddhas, from another point of view could be the potential for Great Compassion, Maha Karuna, in all beings, and it could have other meanings according to the yoguic system of channels and chakras of the subtle body. 🙏

It's so interesting that there was a 'senior awards categories' of monks. But I suppose that makes sense. Each individual tends to especially embody a particular characteristic in mental and emotional development. But one tends to think of enlightenment as a consistently uniform achievement. But they would still be humans, and humans tend to particular proclivities.

Then the Novice Cunda took the almsbowl and robes of the Venerable Sariputta and went to Savatthi, to the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's park. And we remember how vitalizing, enjoyable and helpful his Dhamma instruction was." Of that which is born, come to being, put together, and so is subject to dissolution, how should it be said that it should not depart? That, indeed, is not possible. Correct me if I am wrong. Avalokiteshvara is only a bodhisattava and not really a fully enlighten being, while Sariputta is already an arahant. So why is Avalokiteshvara the one who is seems to be more wise than Sariputta? As a Theravadin, I actually like the Heart Sutra, however, the fact that a bodhisattva is teaching an arahant doesnt make sense. An arahant is already an enligthen-being compared to a bodhisattva! Maybe this just for the Mahayana's way of showing that they are better.? Please enligthen me. Thanks.

It seems to me That in the Heartsutra, the Words « by the power of the buddha the venerable shariputra said This to the bodhisattva Arya avalokitesvara » clearly indicates That the appearance of ignorance on the part of shariputra is only a skillfull mean by wich the buddha produces a dialogue between his disciple and the Bodhisattva of compassion.

It's hard to say for sure Anthony. It could also be read that "the power of the Buddha" enabled Sariputra to witness and therefore have the dialogue with Avalokitesvara, who is after all something of a supernatural being.

Belief does not lead to liberation of the mind, to Enlightenment. We refer to The Three Universal Truths, The Four Noble Truths, etc. as truths because they can be independently verified as truth to acquire wisdom. One needs Teachers to gain access and understanding to the teachings but then, a wise practitioner will not believe the teachings or the Teacher but instead, independently verify the teachings through reflection and practice of the teachings observing the truth to acquire wisdom. With belief, the mind does not know what is true or what is false because the mind is only believing and, thus, will not lead to liberation of the mind.....but through learning, reflecting, and practicing the teachings one can discover the truth to acquire wisdom. The new found wisdom allows mind to function differently in the world - in a more Enlightened way. Liberation occurs through wisdom, not belief. This is one reason that some practitioners consider themselves "truth seekers" or "seekers" as they are seeking independently verifiable truth leading to the wisdom that will eradicate ignorance or the "unknowing of true reality". The unEnlightened mind is trapped in The Cycle of Rebirth due to ignorance (unknowing of true reality) and through eradication of ignorance through acquiring wisdom, the mind becomes more and more Enlightened through a gradual progression of awakening to Enlightenment. The Enlightened mind will be peaceful, calm, serene, and content with joy where 100% of all discontentedness as been eliminated from the mind. The Enlightened mind will no longer experience discontent feelings such as: sadness, anger, frustration, irritation, annoyance, guilt, shame, fears, boredom, loneliness, shyness, jealousy, resentment, anxiety, stress, etc. --------- What are the advantages of attaining Nibbana? There are significant benefits that one will experience through the pursuit and attainment of Nibbana such as: - Increased and high degree of focus - Increased and high degree of concentration - Improved and high degree of memory - Clarity of thought and mind An Enlightened being will no longer experience any discontent feelings such as sadness, anger, frustration, irritation, annoyance, guilt, shame, fears, boredom, loneliness, shyness, jealousy, resentment, etc. An Enlightened being will have deep wisdom in which to conduct daily life. They do not argue, fight, or have any hostility. They are polite, kind, caring, friendly, calm, respectful, etc. They deeply understand what causes harm in the world and, thus, do not cause any harm through their intentions, speech, actions, or livelihood so no harm comes to them. An Enlightened being can create healthy personal and professional relationships. Because of these benefits and others, their mind and their life is peaceful, calm, serene, and content with joy for the remaining time of their life, their last life. Enlightenment is a permanent mental state.

Thanks for the wonderful explanation. However, I have heard that the Buddha didn't want to teach abhidhamma to humans, so that is why the Buddha chose heaven to teach abhidhamma to heavenly beings, but Ven (Maha Arhat/Enlightened). Sariputta also could listen to that teaching, and he summarized it in order to teach it to humans by himself. So the language and the teaching style of the Ven. Sariputta can make a difference between abhidhamma and the other teachings of the Buddha. And the buddha didn't teach abhidhamma to humans directly. The Buddha taught Damma to Humans and Davas, but there is a deep teaching called Abhidhamma in Theravada Buddhism which teaches about the mechanism of the mind etc. I don't know whether Mahayana Buddhism teach Abhidhamma or not. I don't know much about Abhidhamma, but I found this information from WikiPedia (Abhidhamma_Piṭaka): "Tradition holds that the Buddha thought out the Abhidhamma immediately after his enlightenment then taught it to the gods some years later. Later, the Buddha repeated it to Sariputta who then transmitted it to his disciples. This tradition is evident in the Parivara, a late text from the Vinaya Pitaka, which mentions in a concluding verse of praise to the Buddha that this best of creatures, the lion, taught the three pitakas." However, I guess the abhidhamma is not a big requirement to be a stream-enterer, and sometimes the abhidhamma sounds like quantum physics to me. Thank you so much.

Yes each branch of Buddhism has its own Abhidhamma/abhidharma. This is one reason why scholars believe it was a late addition to the Canon, well after the Buddha's lifetime.
