In So Ca, I have pale pink and wine red nicotiana just beginning to bloom! White pink and red vinca minor has survived the rain and cold nights! Dianthus, alyssum, cyclamen are popular here in winter. Pure white, red red, fuchsia. I keep pots & beds with: those from Christmas through Valentine’s Day, then I am so tired of red & white! Lol 😉👍🏼
@ramibu2394 жыл бұрын
@@christinalw19 that's S Cal!!!😅 Unfortunately everything is pretty bleak, dead or dormant in OR (& I'm in W OR - zone8. I'm sure it is even more so so for Laura in E OR - zone 5). I have seen Cyclamen for sale in garden centers during Winter months, but you never see them in anyone's actual garden. We do have Hellebore & Snowdrops that bloom this time of year, but thats about it. I'm envious that you have things that bloom (& grow) all year for you!!!
@ramibu2394 жыл бұрын
@@gardenanswer still think it would be neat to take one red, one white & one cobalt pot - each in a diff size - & do a 4th of July planting too. But that def would be a much easier challenge!!! I think the Amaryllis you are talking about are what we call Hippeastrums here in Aus... living in the tropics where we get dry and monsoon, we use Hippeastrums in the garden beds... they seem to survive both our wet seasons and dry. In other words, we use them as a landscape plant, along with Bromeliads, Birds' Nest Ferns and Fireball Lillies. Interesting to see how climate impacts our planting choices.
@MikaStar124 жыл бұрын
J. D. I had to take a pic ofamaryllis to show bunnings to find what it's called here in Australia lol I've only been here few years from England originally which also it's called amaryllis :) will it survive outdoor in SA?
@j.d.80754 жыл бұрын
@@MikaStar12 Probably shall die back in the frosty winters... try a cheapish one first and then progress to the more expensive varieties... frosts occur in different parts of the north and we get around that by placing sugar cane mulch over things... pea straw etc, should do the same trick.

I’ve been binging your vegetable garden videos because I am building a new garden from scratch and planning now. I have a large pasture that I’m converting to a vegetable garden, small orchard and cutting garden. A few questions: 1. I want to grow raspberries. I know your parents have them but I don’t see you growing them so I’m wondering if they are too much trouble or if there is a reason you aren’t. Also curious about blueberries. 2. Is there anything you would change about your vegetable garden now that you’re a few years in? My infrastructure will be pretty permanent because of fencing and the pathways between my beds so I’m kind of stressed about the planning. I rearranged my old vegetable garden every year because I was indecisive. 🙀😹 3. Do you think a deeper bed for potatoes is the way to go? 4. Do you believe in crop rotation or do you plant things in the same spots year to year? 5. Will you be starting your cutting garden this year? 🤞🏻 For those asking, winter sowing is amazing. It’s extremely easy and hands off approach. The jugs create a more concentrated greenhouse effect for each set of seeds rather than starting them in a large greenhouse. There is a Facebook group devoted to winter sowing if you want more info. You will be amazed at the moisture and warmth that comes out of those jugs. I have had great success with vegetable seedlings but not flowers. Also, you will open the jugs when the weather begins to warm so they adjust to the temps and then put them right in the ground. I open mine up for about a week (keep them moist after you open) right before you’d normally plant your seedlings.

Im moving from a house with a large garden into an apartment with a semi small to medium patio. I would love to see u decorate an apartment sized patio. I have some ideas but im worried about being on the ground floor and not getting enough light etc, watering with a can not a hose, sounds aweful, so many changes. Im from san diego where all things grow, and now have been living in colorado where its a zone 5 also hot in summer kinda cold ish in winter. Thought you could speak to this and im sure a lot of others plant in apartments. Also ps. To your fella who thinks his amarillis might not grow or do anything ....I bought some big, kinda expensive ones from a family owned nursery. Planted them in oct. I did a trial with seeds of same varieties from SeedSavers and Burpee last year - much better germination and healthier plants with the Seed Savers by far. I strongly recommend avoiding Burpee seeds!
