You forgot it was Alfred’s daughter Æthelfead warrior princess you led majority of battles against the Danes that England never talks about. It was Æthelfead who drove the Danes back in a counter offensive and showed mercy to those who submitted to her and her brother. Which brought more Danes surrendering after all most were farmers and merchants and they were ruled forcibly by pirate like individual. Remember Machiavellism chief tenant is people don’t care who rules them if thier normal lives are kept stable. Throw chaos into that stability those same people will eliminate you personally. Why it’s rare change ever happens people don’t want change they like stability in thier everyday lives. In some cases kings and some queens have given names to the people who are causing the disruption to thier daily lives. King doesn’t need do anything people eill do job for him. Why Machiavellism rules then as it does today. Choose your battles. Choose wisely. Always be willing to compromise a little sugar brings good will with previous foes. Who know prefer to be friends.

Another interesting, and much earlier figure, was the Jutish king Æthelberht of Kent, who is cited to be the first christian king and Bretwalda (overlord of Britain). During his reign Canterbury became prominent for christianity in England, the earliest germanic law code was written (Law of Æthelberht, Textus Roffensis) and coinage due to trade with his father in law, the Frankish king, began to circulate for the first time since the arrival of the Anglo-Saxons (and Jutes). He was later canonized for his role in spreading christianity among the new nobility. Figure a video on him would be right up your alley.

Brunanburh in 937ad, is located around Storeton Woods, Wirral - Red Hill Road is said to have been so named as it ran red with blood from the battle (local Folk Lore, more than one source). from the Clatterbridge roundabout on the M53, head towards Tranmere Rovers, you will pass through the battlesite (see also Bernard Cornwell's excellent series 'The Last Kingdom' - the last installment 'Seven Kings Must Die' covers the battle), The survivors returned to Dublin from around Parkgate.

They also were actually the same Germanic people, with the same religion but just from different tribes all around the same sort of area. I thought Scotia was not developed until the 11th century and that the region was occupied by Pict tribes until King Malcolm came along as per the MacBeth tragedy .... this history stuff so full of twists and what if's ... very complicated .. Malcolm united with Margaret of Wessex ( born somewhere in Scandinavia or Rus territory.... who created King's who later were ancestors of English Kings... King William ( the Anglo Norman ) seems to fit the real description of the first English King as his descendants melded with the Scotia Royals and all of them became Anglican ( Roman Catholics until King Henry VIII changed the game when he separated from the Roman Catholic order ) - the Rus were Orthodox Christians as seen in the schism between the Rome Pope and the Rus Pope in 1054ish..
