Aaron Rodgers was definitely the best player in the 2006 draft class career-wise. Alex Smith was terrible his first 4-5 years and eventually was a great QB. The Linebacking class was easily the strongest in the 1st round of that year. Some of those guys were elite players, like DeMarcus Ware and Derrick Johnson. And on a side note, only one of these other guys are still playing in the NFL.

Probably the biggest reason he fell that far after the 49ers wasn’t that nobody wanted him. Other teams just plain couldn’t afford it. This was before the current CBA and rookie wage scale. I saw a video about this a while back showing a list of the 22 teams in between the picks. And they all owed a stupid amount to mostly serviceable journeymen and you just couldn’t take a QB in round one back then without an insane price tag. And it wasn’t worth the risk after most of these teams had recently drafted a bust very high. And may still have been paying some at that time. If you look deeper into it, it starts to make a little more sense.

Alex Smith is one of the most underrated players in history. He got drafted by a bad san fran team with like 3 head coaches and a bunch of new offensive coordinators in his first few years, yet he started winning later in his career there. He had a winning record every year with the chiefs, and was 7-3 whenever he broke his leg with the skins. The skins would of made the playoffs that year if he never got hurt.

V K I used to think that mahomes was overrated until I actually started paying more attention to his play and I have to admit he’s very talented but I don’t think he’s too injury prone I think he just is a bit young and he still needs to adjust to the nfl style of play. It was nice to see Alex Smith have a nice career after having BUST written all over him those first six years. And Rodger was by no means a sure thing coming into the league. And if he had went to San Francisco he would’ve never had the career he’s had. Holding a clipboard for three years was the best thing for him along with going to a good organization. And it looks like the days of a QB sitting and learning for a year or so are over.

The Draft wasn't so much of a big thing as it is now, I do remember Aaron falling and how everyone felt uncomfortable in the booth. So now that my team is trying to pull him in, I wondered could we have drafted him back in 2005? My first thought was well if we passed him up for Sean Taylor I would be OK with that then to find out we passed on him for Carlos Rodgers???? So Pissed. Washington could have dominated the NFC East won a bunch of Super Bowls. Shaking my head. enuff said!

It is unfortunate that nobody talks aboutthe quarterback that was drafted immediately right after Aaron Rodgers. Jason Campbell actually had a lot of promise and with every year with the Redskins he keptimproving and then the Redskins got Donovan McNabb in a trade and let go of Jason Campbell who ended up signing with the raiders and actually helped the raiders to improve to being playoff contenders. If Jason Campbell had never gotten injured in 2011 the raiders would have easily won the AFC West because the broncos barely took the division at 8-8 in a three-way tie with the chargers and the raiders with the broncos owning the tiebreaker. It is interesting to wonder how different things would be if Aaron Rodgers did get drafted with the first overall pick by the 49ers. Although of Alex Smith have never gotten injured in 2012 maybe he would have actually beat the Ravens in the super bowl.

Alex Smith is underrated. If I was a qb I would rather get drafter late in the first round because those teams are already decent so your odds of succeeding are greater. As a #1 overall pick you’re expected to turn around the worst team in the league which not a lot of guys can do. Rodgers got to sit for a few yrs and hide his growing pains while Smith had to show case all his mistakes right off the bat. And the system you play in has a lot to do with your success. Just look at what happened with Smith when he got to the chiefs. When used correctly he is/was a top 15 qb.
