Who Will Be The Final Boss of Shadow of the Erdtree?

Based on the announcement trailer, many are predicting that Messmer the Impaler will be the final boss of Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. But FromSoftware's history suggests that this all important role might go to someone else. Let's take a look at some potential candidates!

Manus was the source of the abyss, The burnt Iovry king had become consumed by the old chaos. The Orphan was stuck in limbo between life and death and was the source of the hunter’s nightmare. And Gael had consumed the dark soul for the painting, but the corruptive power of it drove him mad. The main theme of DLC finale bosses often centers around stopping some kind of source of corruption, and freeing a trapped soul. Because of this I really believe Godwyn has to be the true finale boss.

This is the most sound logic I've seen presented when it comes to DLC theory conversations. I'm inclined to believe it, not because I WANT to fight godwyn, But because I know fromsoft LOVES recycling the same concept over and over again with every game they release. Also the corruption usually stems from a victim of some kind, Manus had his grave upturned and pendant stolen, kos had her baby stolen and her worshippers violated, Gale was enslaved and forced to fight (You could also argue humanity as a whole was a victim to Gwyns subjugation) Godwyn was most certainly a victim, he was quite literally the first demigod to be outright murdered. I'm guessing Messmer will be like the Artorias/Maria figure, the Red Herring. And there will probably be an optional super boss thats even harder than the final boss, I assume whatever it is, it will NOT be a humanoid, and it will probably have little to no prior reference in the base game. (It will be foreshadowed early into the DLC tho)

It will be somebody or something new. The first trailers for their DLCs pretty much never revealed the final boss. Nobody could have predicted Orphan of Kos, Manus or Friede back then because they were never talked about in the base game. Gael was a huge plot twist but I doubt they will repeat something like that. Maybe there will be multiple final bosses depending on choices we make like Isshin in Sekiro. One final boss could be Miquella while another one would be some crazy thing like a new outer god. I want to be surprised. Actually Miquella could be a boss that's not the final one but near the end like Maliketh or Gideon.

I don't think it's even possible to make a boss like Gael for the dlc, narrative wise. No matter how insignificant he seems, the Ringed City dlc always had traces of Gael everywhere. And since there wasn't any other major character in terms of the power dynamics of the world, Gael could easily swoop in. But for SOTE we already have stuff like Miquella and Messmer, both of whom are established in the lore to have significance in the politics of the lands between. But I do have the feeling that they'll pull something like Orphan of Kos where the boss is a humanoid but belongs to the highest tier of characters in terms of power levels, which in the case for ER would be an Outer God.

To me its pretty clear that Miquella wanted Godwyn to die properly so that he can once again enter the cycle of reincarnation. "Oh brother, lord brother, please die a true death". So his goal is not to heal him in the conventional way which would've been fixing his body and reentering his soul.

Just a note. Youve mentioned several times in this video how certain NPCs (Melina, Godwyn) wouldnt make sense because of certain game endings. Remember, this DLC takes place DURING your adventure to become Elden Lord, NOT after the ending.

Shadow of The Erdtree (SotE) seems to be following the Artorias of the Abyss (AotA) and Old Hunters approach to storytelling, as opposed to Ashes or Ringed City style of storytelling. We know that SotE is built off the basis of Elden Ring’s base lore, specifically that the Shadow Lands will centre around Miquella and tell us of the secrets of the past (Golden Order and Marika), as well as exploring the history of long-forgotten/segregated cultures of the Lands Between. If we follow trends, the final bosses for AotA and The Old Hunters both share a key and significant similarity. Manus and Orphan of Kos are literally responsible for those DLCs even existing. *AotA* AotA revolves around the secrets of the Abyss with a fairytale-like experience, but Manus IS the father of abyss. In a DLC about the Abyss, the final boss is the root of the abyss.. *Old Hunters* Old Hunters revolves around the secrets of the Church via a nightmare. Nightmares in BB are the development of particular Great Ones’ manifestation. In a DLC about a nightmare, the final boss is a creature that is responsible for the nightmare you’re experiencing. *SotE* Given SotE’s similar approach to Expansion-narrative as AotA and Old Hunters, where the story is more about pre-existing secrets, we can infer some interesting details. AotA = Abyss = final boss is root of abyss OH=nightmare= boss is root of nightmare SotE’s core focus is the concealing nature of the Lands. The centre of the DLC revolves around Marika’s secret in the Shadow Lands. The final boss will be someone who is responsible for the DLCs narrative… I think the final boss is Marika as the Gloam Eyed Queen… the specificities of my “Marika = Gloam Queen” theory doesn’t matter (as that’s a whole another can of worms, and too much writing lol), but what matter is that the DLCs final boss is responsible for the reason sfor which the lands are the way they are. Marika will fight us as her hidden/shadowself, the part of her that she wants concealed, the part of her that is her trueself… the Gloam Queen. In a DLC about the Shadow, the final boss will be the root of the Shadow

The Shadows are the eyes, ears, guardians of the Empyreans. Imagine if all along, we were being aided by an Empyrean - being provided with the help we need to get to where we need to go. Every place we go within limits being tracked, all we see and do being made known to the Empyrean. Like his master, the Shadow would be passive in its endeavors and we’d be none the wiser. Every step we took has led us to where we were meant to follow: Miquella. Who could his Shadow be? Who was with us every step of the way? Could it be Torrent? That crossed my mind from the beginning with that gold whistle meant to call him. From where? My bet is that when not with us, he returns to Miquella’s side. Hard to say, but it would make sense.

While it doesn't fit the wolf trend of the shadows, I'm fond of the idea that Torrent is Miquella's shadow. Miquella is his former master as shown by his steed calling ring and the promotional image, and I'd be surprised if Miquella doesn't try to call him back/transform him into his "true form" (a minotaur type thing?) or something when Miquella inevitably turns on us. Obviously we would get him back after we "prove our strength to torrent" by beating him or something, but that's my best guess as to why we don't see or hear anything about his shadow in the base game

It will literally be the erd tree's shadow. Everyone who's making these theories seem to forget that the empyreans have shadows, blaid, maliketh, the lion on godfeys shoulders, this is most likely a system that mirrors the elden beasts power structure, im calling it now, the final boss will be inside the tree, and it will be the elden beasts shadow. And on top of this, miazaki keeps saying "shadow of the erd tree" is a double meaning.

Im going to guess you choose a faction to join to plant/grow a new erdtree, which necessitates wiping out all the competition in order to give the sappling enough dead matter to grow anew (think nitrogen cycle). So maybe the final boss would be fought to control death itself, aka, Malenia/Gloam Eyed Mother so you can start the process anew with fertile soil. Nothing new can grow in the shadow of the erdtree without it. Afterall, Marika removed death if i remember right, but maybe that was done just to prevent there being a foodsupply for competeing trees to grow off of?

Lamenia, the secret sister of Malenia. " I'm Malenia don't confuse me with Malenia cause she was slow and weak ". Her waterfall dance has 6 parts and change directions and pauses time randomly every time. Every time she hits you her energy bar gets 50% restored. When you hit her part of the damage is redirected at you. Her sword is a colossal one and she has a shield she quickly raises randomly that breaks your poise immediately. Also forget about breaking her poise since she has her legs and not some prosthetics. If you beat her in her first phase (you won't) she'll turn into goddess of roast where every hit of the blade is a flaming inferno that instakills by default and her aeonia bomb dive isn't fixed in trajectory but hunts you down. Theoretically there's even a third and least phase where she uses a spell bringing all your stats to 1 and destroy your weapons upgrades. Git gud.

It’ll definitely be Miquella. Everything seems to hint that Miquella may want to take your body to return to life. You’ve already set the stage for Godwyn to be ressurected (you defeated Radahn, now the Solar Eclipse can occur, which seems to be what is required and what Miquella was trying to do.) Then the two of them would take over and rule together. Now whether this is an incestual thing (it is George R R Martin in the end,) who knows. Miquella is depicted as being devastated by Godwyn’s murder though, and would likely do anything to be reunited with him and to get revenge. I think Godwyn will be a new Lands Between boss after being ressurected, and will be the secret super boss. Meanwhile Miquella tricks us into defeating Messmer, whose truly a hero that keeps things in check by providing destined death in place of the death rune being gone, so Miquella can do as they please.

I think Messmer will be the opener boss that gates you from the DLC OR a mid point boss. One of the Blood Gods will be the main boss and Messmer will be serving them and/or Miquella

Sidenote: I was going to say Melina/Gloam Eyed Queen too, the whole "I was burnt and forgotten in a far away land" line from Melina makes me think Messmer killed her other half (ala; Marika/Radagon, Miquella/St Trina) as the Gloam Eyed Queen, who might still be trapped there? Either way I think we're getting an answer to Melina's past from whatever Messmer's doing burning bodies.

They already started that Messmer will be the main antagonist of the DLC so I highly doubt you fight him in the opening or middle, He'll likely be the final boss or the second to final boss, The latter seems more likely to me, I could also see something where after you kill him you talk to Miquella and depending on what you've done or how you answer him, You can fight him or St Trina as the true final boss, Which would be really cool IMO

Mesmer will be a middle boss, Godwyn might be some optional projection, Miquella will be the final boss. Maybe switch Miquella or Godwyn. Don't think any other Elden Ring characters will show up. There might be a Marika projection or something given that we only fought Radagon but never Marika.

Godwyn will play a major role at some point, but I don't think it will be in this DLC. The Idea of Us having to fight the Shadow of Miquella and maybe Malenia makes sense, since there is no Clue at all about them in the basegame. I also think that SotE will be the first DLC, not the Last.
