I really like this interpretation! Particularly fitting considering Godrick's feelings of insecurity regarding his heritage and him taking the title of "the Golden" once Godwyn was killed, it makes sense that he would desperately seek to resemble Godwyn in some form.

Godwyn is the Big bad, guys. It's amazing to me that over a year on and people still haven't picked up on it. Rogiers story of the Night of Black Knives is a lie. Let me break it down for you. First off Marika controls the Black Knife Assassins. They guard her bedchamber. They wield the Black Knives, which can only be made with a Shard of the Rune of Death which Marika's brother/pet/thing Maliketh has. They even go after Ranni and succeed in killing Iji. So we know Ranni doesn't control them. You don't kill your war counselor on the eve of a War with God. But God will kill your war counselor. So ONLY MARIKA can kill in the lands between. She has absolute control of Life and Death. Ranni does not like this. She wants to control her destiny. So she steals a fragment of the Rune of Death, forges a Black Knife for herself, and she kills herself using it. Coincidentally on the same night Marika sends the Black Knife Assassins after Godwyn. Here is the Rub guys. Ranni and Godwyn dying at the same time, have nothing to do with each other. They don't effect each other. They both only half die for their own independent reasons. Rogiers theory is wrong. Ranni's soul survived because she put it in Primal Glintstone. Sellen has us do this with her as well. It demonstrates how Sorcerers can have their body die but retain their soul. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH GODWYN! And Godwyns body survived because he partook in Dragon Communion. He has an Immortal, ever beating, Dragon Heart. Just like Igon. Igon's body is completely and utterly broken. All he can do is scream in pain. But he cannot die because he has a Dragon Heart. Furthermore Fia tells us she is stealing life from Tarnished and feeding that life to her Lord. Which is of course Godwyn. Godwyn's body not dieing has NOTHING TO DO WITH RANNI. They are two separate incidents. The only thing that connects them is, because of the timing, they both got half of the Cursemark. Which would have gone to whoever died first. But simultaneous death means each got half. Fia is Fortissax. Godwyn's best friend. The Dragon he fought on Stormcaller hill. The LICH dragon you fight inside Fia's dream. The one that says Fortissax has been fighting against the Death that is within Godwyn. Yeah that's what Fia has been doing! Feeding Godwyn life to stop his body from dying! The moment we figured out Fia was working FOR Godwyn, everyone should have questioned everything she told us before that. Analysed it to see if she was trying to get us to sympathise with Godwyn. Say, like telling us Godwyn was Marikas favorite and that him dieing caused the shattering (neither of which is verified by ANY other source of information) Or when we found out she was sleeping with Rogier. We should have questioned Rogiers objectivity. No one did that. Just took a random NPCs word as gospel and everything we see that contradicts that, gets ignored. Stop ignoring the facts. Godwyn is the Big bad and the DLC CONFIRMS ALL OF THIS! They even named the NPC who does Dragon Communion FLORISSAX as if to tell us to pay attention to the OTHER dragon with a similar name.

Godwyn is one of the best characters in Elden Ring. It is so sad what happened to him. He is one of the few people who would have been worthy of being Elden Lord. I hope we can find a way to kill him fully so he can find peace or restore his soul.

Maybe in the dlc The reason Malenia went to caelid to fight Radan was to resume the motion of the stars. Miquella believed that his soul and body could be reunited through a ritual, however for the ritual they needed an eclipse.

Godwyn truly have the saddest history in Elden Ring. He couldn't even die properly... Not being enough, his Dragon even tried to help him, to only the game punch our faces saying it didnt worked, and show a dragon trying to do something about his master... The Golden mask ending seems to be the most wise one, for me, now.

Godwyn was 100% the Lord Brother Miquella was referring to, the devs steered away from this because everyone is obsessed with Radahn. A pity. Godwyn's death is what started the entire story, Miquella refers to Godwyn far more than Radahn and having Miquella restore Godwyn in the Shadow Realm after his lack of a true death in the Lands between would be poetic, similarly, Mohg could have been the sacrifice to bring this about and the final boss being 2 gold haired beings, Godwyn and Miquella with pure gold attacks and Marika being so pivotal in the entire lore would be so satisfying, her two gold-haired children the fighting as one. The shattering occurred because he was golden, Miquella was golden, Marika was golden. Damn, it pains me even thinking about how good it could have been

My current theory is the haligtree had a small role in the attempt to restore Godwyn. The ‘cocoon of the empyrean’ is Miquella’s creation, not Miquella. So that whithered arm is in the cocoon is part of Godwyn’s shriveled body. Godwyn’s soulless body helped as an ingredient, for the ritual to get to the Shadow of the Erdtree. Visually the whithered arm makes sense (looking at the base of the erdtree we see a weird looking body)and the language is ambigous enough to also make sense. And i don’t think the community ‘just loved radahn’ Radahn gets some of the most character development and is entire being is central to the story of the base game. I am of the opinion that, we should have had an Outer God to fight. I don’t know which or how, but i think that’s what the DLC could have used. I’m fully leveled on my Scadutree Fragments and Spirit Ashes and only Consort Radahn remains a challenge. Oh i also wish the DLC wiuld have reflected and reverberated the base game in some ways like Gideon or a few more character insights. But still pretty happy with what we got.

I think I heard the theory on Ranni/Godwyn being betrothed from Tarnished Archeologist a whilr back, and it still sticks with me. I really think it makes sense. In her dialogue Ranni makes it very clear she doesn't want to be controlled "by that thing". She holds deep reverance for her mother Rennala, and Rennala had already been so wronged by Radagon/Marika and the Golden Order. She must have seen the writing on the walls. Why do the Carians have so many dragons? A bride price, perhaps? I really love this idea.

I mean, when we look at Ranni’s other choices for sacrifices in the Night of Black Knives, assuming she didn’t know about Morgott and Mohg, what we’re left with are her own brothers, Rykard and Radahn, who she grew up with, and her half-siblings Miquella and Malenia who she had watched grow up. Godwyn was the only demigod who she didn’t share a parent with (since she likely didn’t know Radagon and Marika were the same person). It may have just come down to him because he was just her stepbrother, by process of elimination essentially. That’s kinda my Occam’s Razor answer, though I think it does also make a certain amount of sense that Godwyn would have been planned to be Ranni’s Elden Lord should she ever ascend the throne. I do, however, think that if this was the case, it would have been more of a back-up plan than anything, since with Queen Marika being “the Eternal” and sealing away Death and whatnot, I fully believe she wanted/expected her reign to last forever.

I second this! Adding to your statement, Godwyn was also the most logical target for Ranni and Rykard's aims of toppling the Golden Order considering he was possibly the most powerful demigod politically (and potentially personally as well), so his death would inevitably cause a crisis. Regarding the succession of Gods and Lords... yeah the subject is kinda vague considering Marika was immortal. However, it could be that, being an Empyrean of human (Numen) origin, Marika knew her mind wouldn't be able to handle being a god forever, so she started cultivating a succession of sorts in private and only publicly was known as "the Eternal". This falls squarely into speculation though.

The other demigods could have been victims of the assassins' choosing rather than Ranni's (who already got what she wanted out of Godwyn). To add to this, they clearly are not on Ranni's side by the time of the game.

I honestly think that the next DLC after Shadow of the Erdtree should be centered around dealing with Godwyn and his growths that have taken roots in the Erdtree and spread across the lands between. We get so much lore in base game and even more in Shadow of the Erdtree. The next DLC could be something like the growths becoming to big and maybe bursting from the Erdtree in an attempt to consume it and the natural life that comes with it, in the name of Godwyn; Prince of Death. And the story could be us trying to hold back the blight or something along those lines. There's a lot of potential with Godwyn.

"Godwyn's soul died but not his body because Ranni's body died but not his soul." Okay. That's fine. Except.... That's not how Ranni's soul survived. Sellen shows us how it works. You put your soul in Primal Glintstone and it prevents it from dying. What about Godwyn? Godwyn partakes in Dragon Communion. He has an immortal Dragon Heart. And besides Fia's job is stealing life from Tarnished for him. She steals our HP and gives it to Godwyn to keep his body alive. Both of those are confirmable, observable ways to prevent death that other NPCs use. Rogiers theory is NOT confirmable or Observable. Occums razor says that we should go with the theory that has the least number of assumptions. Rogiers is one big assumption.... That Death is an idiot. Mine has 0. Mine is confirmed true. So...

Cool video! A couple points I think are worth discussing: 1. I do believe we’ll meet Godwyn one way or another in the DLC. We have to beat Radahn and resume the fate of the stars before entering the Land of Shadow, meaning there could be a possibility of an Eclipse happening. We have too little info to assume anything regarding what’s gonna be like, Messmer could not even be the biggest baddie in it for all know. From always surprises us. 2. Ranni killing Godwyn was very likely not personal. She’s collected, intelligent but most of all very rational. If she had left Godwyn alive, he’d most likely have taken the throne, maybe even would’ve figured everything out and gone after her. Nothing would’ve changed had she left Godwyn alive, it was just “business”

Ranni didn't do it at all. Why does everyone treat Rogier like the ultimate source of info? Guys Rogier is dead. We watch him die under Stormveil. That's undead Rogier who tells us "his theory" on the night of black knives. It's a trick. Ranni was killing herself. Because before that, only Marika has the power to kill. Ranni didn't invent death. She stole death and forged her own Black Blade. They already existed. Marika just controlled the only people who used them.. and Marika wasn't gonna do Ranni a solid and get her out of a Marriage Marika was forcing on her. So she pulled off the biggest heist ever and stole a fragment and forged her own blade. And killed herself with it. Meanwhile Marika was killing Godwyn. Totally separate. How each survives, also separately. Primal Glintstone and Dragon Communion. Different techniques. Different results too. It's Fromsofts magnum opus. They tricked everyone into thinking the bad guy was the good guy.

Y'all just don't realize because you think he is a good guy. But there's a Baldachin on the Scadutree. Everything is Gold and Black. Godwyn's colors. Those who Live in Death are almost every mob. Some of the only normal animals are Golden Lightning rams. Golden Lightning being Godwyn's power of course. The Black Knight set says Godwyn's knights followed him here. The Deathknight weapons makes NO sense unless Godwyn is sacrificing people. It's a trap. Godwyn is big bad. Confirmed by the DLC. Fia's manipulating Rogier and you into reuniting the cursemarks. Their night of black knives story. It was all a trick. Godwyn fooled you. He's not Marika's favorite loved everywhere by everyone! WHERE DO YOU SEE THAT? Like SEE it. He has ONE monument. It's a sword monument. He doesn't have a single painting? THE FAVORITE? Marika is everywhere. Statues. Paintings. Where is Godwyns? Why do we believe he is the favorite? It's what Rogier tells us. And we just... Believe it. An NPC. With nothing backing it up. It's not real. This is why this is Fromsofts Magnus Opus guys. They literally got everyone. Hid the big bad under our noses. It really is brilliant. It's like, if Kaathe was a hot mostly naked woman who gave you a hug then asked you to usher in an Age of Dark.

It would be pretty interesting if there is an encounter with Godwyn the golden in the shadow realm. Maybe it'll be like that patches situation in the dark souls 3 the ring city DLC, where Godwyn's spirit has no memory of who he was in life and helps the character on their journey through the land of shadow.

Unfortunately the Lands between barely lays out their nobility at all. It's basically; Marika was queen of everything but raya Lucario then the shattering happens and demigods own territories, nobles were granted land to protect, everyone else is servile.

I'm somewhat sure we'll see something in the dlc referring to Godwyn , I'm sure his death root has made it to the land of shadows somehow, or miquella has gone there on Godwyns behalf, I think this dlc is going to be enormous in scoope, I feel fromsoft will address everything Elden Ring mystery related, I mean this will be the last Elden Ring expansion, I think we're all going to be shocked at the scale of shadow of the erdtree. 🤯

It's really possible bc erdtree burial makes the tarnished and all the lands between, children of Marika

One of my favorite theories is that Miquella and Ranni had some form of cooperation that may have involved Godwyn's willing participation in being slain. He chose peace instead of extermination. He doesnt share his mother's genocidal paranoia. He chose to offer a hand rather than a final blow to a battered and beaten foe. Its fascinating to think he may have willingly gone into Death to expose the flaws that both Ranni and Miquella found within the Golden Order. Its why Ranni vows her Age reign only 1000 years. She is prepared to hand off the next Age because she realized that Marika's rule turned the Lands Between stagnant and ignorant in an effort for Marika to retain her relevance as faith in her power waned with the First Burning of the Erdtree, requiring the formation of the Golden Order. She sought to reign forever as a grand saviour.

My theory is Godwyn might end up being the Slave Knight Gael of Shadow of the Erdtree. Not the main villain, but the final boss at the end after you've beaten Messmer and potentially Miquella if he ended up going full blown Griffith.

I am curious, when Ranni had Godwyn killed, did she anticipate what could potentially happen to the corpse after the assassination? Is she even aware of the giant thing that is growing and spreading under ground? Wouldn't such a thing be a potential danger to her rule and plans along with her consort, for those who choose her ending i mean? I could just be overthinking it though.

Godwyn's golden lightning is wielded by the lion dancer in shadow of the erdtree. So we shall see if something atleast is connected to godwyn in lands of shadows.

I don't know what goes on in the minds of Miyazaki and his team but i think its a little bit of a missed opportunity. Imagine the tarnished revives Godwyns soul and body in the shadow of the erdtree by applying the curse on his body and one of the spirit Mohgs potentially (or radahn to kill his mind if applicable despite rot) which could lead to an alternative final dlc boss with miquella and godwyn instead of radahn and miquella. It could've been an interesting thing, but maybe they have plans for him in the future

The bird was the “envoy” of an Outer God… I wonder if the same god will fiddle with Godwyn’s husk and make him a bird... or fish like you mentioned. I think Godwyn was god-skinned on the night of the black knifes. Ranni and Rykard, her fellow conspirator, have connections to the godskins and the godskin prayerbook and the godslayer's seal are both located in Stormveil. That mess under the castle could be the skin from Godwyn's face.

I want to know more about how the teleporter found in Godwyn's arena. Why is it there? Who used it? We know Mogh used one to reach his domain from the haligteee, did someone use that one to reach leindell after placing Godwyn in the roots to taint the erdtree?

It makes me wonder if, given the revelations in the DLC, Miquella's original plan centered around Godwyn. But because of the fact that Godwyn is trapped in a state of living death, he could not pass to the land of shadow, hence why Miquella wanted him to have a "proper death" and did things like fashion the epitaph and send Fortisaxx through sleep to fight back against the death blight.

You're "Maybe Ranni killed Godwyn because he was most likely to become her consort (elden lord)" answers one of the biggest questions i've had so far about the lore. Maybe they were bound in a bigger way and that's why Ranni had to kill him (very sad tho, RIP CHADgywn), great video bro

I think it's mentioned by a finger reader crone that Godwyn was a martyr. It makes me feel like he almost went to death willingly. I agree with the idea that Ranni was destined to be the next God and Godwyn the next elden lord, but I almost think Godwyn was in on it. The Golden Sun and the Dark Moon come together to form the Eclipse. And what does the rune of death look like? An Eclipse. I think it was a ritual they both willingly took part in to usurpe the golden order.

Ranni got the knife from Marika. It says that Maliketh was betrayed(ofc by marika) and his only role was to keep the rune of death... so therefor she betrayed him by stealing it from him, noone else could. Maliketh was fear by everyone(except marika i presume)

Since it seems like Godywn will be part of the new expansion (in one form or another) I wonder if this will be in the form of an actual boss or just more lore explanations! Either I’m really curious to what all shadow of the Erdtree has awaiting the tarnished! Elden Ring being such a huge & fun game with more content in base game then each previous souls game with dlc included! That means this expansion will be a sizable new chunk of Elden Ring with many fans using the term Elden Ring 1.5! Which seems to be the case!

I speculate that it is because there are multiple "kinds" of Tarnished. -The first generation: Godfrey and his army. (example: Godfrey himself) -The exiled: Tarnished not originally associated with Godfrey but sent to the badlands after losing grace because of some crime they committed. (example: the Prisoner class) -The children: Tarnished who descend from the first two. (example: Nepheli Loux) -The outlanders: Those who do not descend from Tarnished and are not from the Lands Between but joined Godfrey's Tarnished army at some point. (example: The Samurai class)

I always felt like "die a true death"means miquella is more after removing deathroot from the land between by giving godwyn a true death rather than restoring him.more of a pulling the plug on a sick person(sorry). And i think will have godwyn elments in the dlc as seen the lion dancers were using gold lightning, which is heavily associated with the dragon cult and godwyn himself, also i think fortissax being able to live in godwyn dream means a connection to st. if you mean godwyn i think he's born of the dew of the erdtree, in game says he was born from the golden boughs, i think its how the albernurics are doing it with a birthing droplet, it says its dew, and celetital dew is what the nox made, its also silver, i think marika has/had a silver counter part, probably the gloam eye queen, i think miquella and ranni are opposites as well

We are going to fight Godwyn in the DLC in his PoD form, 100%. Miquella said he wanted to give Godwyn a proper death "O brother, lord brother, please die a true death," and cure Malenia of her rot. That's all we really know about Miquella's motives. All of Marika's children were cursed, so there's clearly something we don't know about Godwyn yet. Miquella was sympathetic to "hybrids" because Miquella is also hybrid. At the end of the DLC (and at the eclipse), be very ready to fight Miquella when he realizes the only way he can accomplish his goals is by becoming a god.
