Another episode in our Top 10 series. This week stary focused on the men in the trenches, but this time on the defensive side of the ball. We are counting down the Top 10 Defensive Linemen of All-Time!
Who will take the top spot? Stay tuned to find out!
How I ranked the linemen:
Review each defensive lineman from the 1970 season up to and including the 2015 season and apply the following calculations:
- Total number of All-Pro selections * 7
- Total number of Pro Bowl appearances * 3
- Total games played * 0.50
- Total sacks * 5
- Total interceptions * 4
Then, rank the linemen based on the total FGV.

Sacks are definitely taken into consideration and the fact that the game has changed over the last several decades places a higher importance on that stat. Donavan, Atkins and Marchetti all ended their careers before 1970 which was the initial stipulation. It’s not perfect, but it’s my best (1st) attempt at an unbiased list. Thanks for watching!

I totally agree with your assessment of the sacks. There are unofficial sacks that could be used. However, interceptions with defensive linemen? Let's use a stat that's more representative of a defensive lineman: fumbles and fumble recoveries. In addition, let's include some players that the Hall of Fame has shunned for various reasons or players within five years to be voted on. Yes, I will be a Homer (and I know three Vikings are on the list already), Jim Marshall, and Aaron Donald. Just some things to think about when making these lists.

@@0723martin Thanks for watching and the feedback! I used interceptions only because of a lineman can grab the ball out the air I think that helps change the game. Now fumbled and/or fumble recoveries are something to think about! I’ll definitely take that into consideration in the future!

Terrible list, but then the criteria used is going to generate the list is a flawed list. Unfortunately for a lot of the older players individual statistics generally were not kept for some of the linemen, such as tackles for loss or tackles in general. So, the criteria used is going to favor pass rushers and more modern players. Be that as it may, if Elvin Bethea is NOT on your list, you know you have a problem. The guy was averaging double digits sacks with 2 fewer games a year than most the defensive ends on your list and with quarterbacks generally only throwing about 15-20 passes a game! Bethea gets lost in a lot of discussions because he played for Houston at time when Houston generally sucked, so he would be overlooked sometimes. For instance, in 1976 he had 14.5 sacks to LC Greenwood's 4.5 but yet Greenwood made the pro bowl.
@thefootballguyusa7941
@thefootballguyusa7941 5 күн бұрын
Bethea came in at #17 mostly due to lower sack total of 105 (compared to the top 10 average of 160) and he was never selected to the All-Pro 1st team (plenty of Pro Bowls with 8). I agree that lack of stats makes era comparisons more difficult, but I think this is the best I can do.🤷‍♂️ Thanks for watching!

Sure... Bruce Smith had 200 sacks, but it took him 19 seasons to do it. Reggie White had 198 sacks, and did it in only 15 seasons. Smith was All-Pro 11 times in 20 seasons, but White was All-Pro 14 times, and did it in 15 seasons. White had 13 Pro Bowls, Smith had 11 Pro Bowls. White led the NFL in sacks twice, and Smith didn't lead the NFL ever. White had more Approximate Value pts than Smith (231-229), even though he played four years less, which shows that White had higher productive seasons. In White's best 3 yr span, from 1986 - 1988, White had 57 sacks. In Smith's best 3 yr. span, from 1988 to 1990, Smith had 43 sacks.

@KamikazeJustice
@KamikazeJustice 3 күн бұрын
@@thefootballguyusa7941 Both were 1st team AP eight times. An unbias look at the stats would still show White with the best stats. Just because Smith had 2 sacks more than White, doesn't make him better than White, since White got his 198 sacks while playing four less years. Smith playing 19 years is also deceptive, since 8 of those years, Smith wasn't an All-Pro... 1st or 2nd team. That gives Smith 11 exceptional years. White played in 15 years, and wasn't an All Pro (1st or 2nd team) just 1 season... his last season. That gives White 14 exceptional years to Smith's 11 exceptional years.

Hate to break it you, but from 1960-2023, the consensus Top 3 D-Tackles in NFL history are Bob Lilly, Merlin Olsen, and Joe Greene. Olsen went to 14 Pro Bowls, Lilly to 11 Pro Bowls, and Greene to 10 Pro Bowls. Lilly was dominant in Super Bowl 5 and 6, he recorded a 29 yard sack in Super Bowl 6, and the Cowboys won Super Bowl 6. Greene won 4 Super Bowls in 6 years with the Steelers and he played a significant role in all 4 Super Bowl victories. Heck, Randy White is better than Randle or Page and the proof is in the run stopping pudding. Randle was frequently bludgeoned in the run game and Page was manhandled in not 1, not 2, not 3, but in 4 Super Bowls. White was not as good as Lilly, Olsen, and Greene in the run game, but you couldn't overpower the Manster on a consistent basis. It's important to note that White was named the co-MVP of Super Bowl 12.

So being voted the best Lineman in the league in any given season is worth less than 2 sacks? Points for interceptions? Why would there be any points given for a statistic that is close to useless for an interior lineman and even traditional ends? A journeyman playing an extra season as the backup and getting 0 sacks is worth more than a lineman that plays one less year, but is considered a first-team All-Pro in that season? C'mon, are you serious? Bruce Smith as the #1? Great player but Reggie White is the clear cut winner here, hands down. Played all 4 defensive line positions. Threw offensive linemen around like Raggedy Ann dolls with one arm. Excelled at both stopping the run and sacks, and covered tight ends occasionally. Always had to be blocked by 2 offensive linemen and/or a tight end in most games. And offensive coordinators had to change their game plans to account for him at all times, like Lawrence Taylor (LB).

I agree with @scottpagent2925. MERLIN OLSON was a monster if you watch him on NFL films it's unreal how hard he was to block and you couldn't run the ball outside on him. Give him some sacks for being double teamed on every play making it easier for DJ.

No Mean Joe Greene ,Bob Lily ,Randy Manster White , Deacon Jones ,Merlin Olson this list is too consumed in some cases with low impact sack accumalation and not enough intrinsic impact substance ,sacrifice of personal stats to enhance players around them by consuming multiple blockers ,leadership , big game performance ,staunch run defense for instance stance Greene won def rookie of year ,two time def player of year ,clogged up several blockers to allow his comrades easier access to qb and rb ,they often only recieved one or no blockers to deal with.The 13 goat on nfl top 100 all time lists and top DT ,he should be top 10 .Greene ,Lily ,White ,Olson all played superior run defense than any vikings player on lists ,complete combo run stopper ,pass rush. DT's . For first time I've been disappointed in one of his lists ,not objective ,just stats orientated . Intangible impact which resonated upon entire team " Mean Joe Greene ,Bob Lily ,Randy White " dismissed . How many great sb's any vikings player on list have ? Joe Greene teammate Andy Russell once stated Mean Joe Greene could arguably be considered player of the 70's decade ,his intangible and tangible presence nurtured a legendary defense and. help a team believe greatness was possible . Greene ,Lily ,White , not making this list is baffling .

How could you have Deacon Jones ahead of Merlin Olson? Don’t get me wrong I love Deacon, if you asked him do you think this player will play this week? He would always say depends…….whether he takes the shot or not (cortisone) and his earplug slap gave concussions BUT what made it the fearsome foursome was Merlin Olson cause he demanded a double team every play or he would make every play!! I do love the story where Deacon, who was an eye for an eye kind of guy, would tell Merlin stop apologizing to these guys!! You need to put them into and under the ground!! Didn’t matter every time Merlin would make the play he would help them up and apologize if he hit them too hard. Mr. Olson in an interview said he detest violence but when he joined the Rams he made a promise that he swore he would keep.

@@thefootballguyusa7941 Bruce Smith had 200 sacks, only 2 more sacks than Reggie White, but Smith needed 4 more years to get those 2 sacks. Also, compare their best 3 consecutive years, and White does best there, too. Smith's 19 yrs of the NFL sounds nice, but Smith was not an All Pro for 8 of those years. White played 15 seasons, and missed being an All Pro just once, and that was his last year.
