We had some time to fill to entertain the fans between the real race events, so we did a slow race to see who could go the slowest. It was a fun time. 2021 Mayday STOL Drag in Wayne, Nebraska

Doing the STOL Drags is fun to watch because of the speed. But doing the flight portion as slow as you can is fun to watch because it's a test of the pilot's airmanship skills and how well they know their aircraft. It would be fun to see both ends of the speed spectrum at STOL Drags.

This is the first time I hear the winner is the latest to cross the final mark during a race ! Great entertainment with very talented pilots, thank you for sharing !

Now that looks like a lot of fun.... keep it up, don't stall, don't scratch... Takes some serious skills too. Fine line, sinking or climbing on that throttle and pitch.

Hey, Steve I think that should be an event at the STOL races! How fast can you takeoff how slow can you go ! That shows the capabilities of the aircraft and the skill of the pilots, I loved that.
@MrHansen3 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a new STOL competition standard. Make a square course and see who can fly around it the slowest without touching the ground. Fantastic!

There's MOST DEFINITELY a new future "Slow Race" STOL Series/Category(ies)!!!!!!! I follow ALL the STOL Competitions/Fly-Ins, and this STOL Slow Flight against Hal Stockman reminded me of watching the first "STOL" flight Ytube video, lol, down the rabbit hole I went head first, lol. Kevin Quinn could come up with an ingenious way of making practical all around and fun and competitive. I have no doubt about that. Can't wait to get time to come to a Competition and see everything in person. Keep up the great work and thank you for sharing your passion with us all.

Did this back in the early 80’s when I was sponsoring an ultralight event. Great test of skills. Also did an event with a litre of measured fuel. Winner stayed airborne longest but had to land Back at same spot! Go for thermals or most efficient speed. 🇨🇦😊

That was wicked!! I'm picturing something like a form of bracket racing, maybe one race has an event/class-set time or window, one with a different set of parameters, and the current STOL for a total of three different, separate or combined as legs in one race (like a triathlon), with a max elevation above ground? Y'all could have FUN coming up with different "legs", even if just for exhibition..🏁
@portnuefflyer3 жыл бұрын
Excellent! That looks like more fun than the drags, it really showcases a different level of skill and performance, great job by both pilots. Another great contest, is to first totally defuel, than give both pilots a certain amount of fuel, both take off, climb to 1 K, (min.) and the first to land loses. We did this back in the ultralight days, and it was a blast, obviously impractical here, without using jerry jugs for fuel tanks like we did then, making the defueling part easy.

Hi Steve Henry ! I Found a Kit Fox 4 in a barn !! Hal Stockman finished the engine. I bought it for $4500 with a Trailer too !! This plane is almost ready to fly. Brand New engine, only some small skin to finish. A BARN FINDER !! CHEAP !! I don't even fly ! However it has been a dream of mine. This plane fell into my lap !! I hope to meet you some day. New rules: shortest take off, slowest run down, shortest landing past the line, quickest take off, slowest return, shortest landing on the return. From the go signal timer starts, off when in the air, back on at touch down, off in the air and time is added to the total at the other end to assure one is not sandbagging at the other end.

Could make that a five point exhibition race. One point for first off, one point for last landing, one point for first off on the return, two points for last landing (maybe before 80 foot second landing line).

Seems more dangerous than STOL drags due to the stall factor. Hal looked like he struggled with control on the downwind leg. I’d hate to see someone get hurt, but it was entertaining to watch.
@portnuefflyer3 жыл бұрын
He wasn't struggling, he just knows his wing well enough to get right close to the edge. If I didn't see what I saw, I would have dissed him for not trying hard enough! A 4100 hr in type S7 flier here, who has slow flown with Steve, this was a blast to watch, great jobs by both pilots!

That was really cool! Now how do you make sure everyone plays fair at the other end. Might have to have two lines at that end, the first you have to land beyond it but you can't go past the second line??? Lets see what you come up with. Oh yeah, what about how high you go? I guess you would be limited by the length of the course.

The fairest way to do this as a real event- all time on the ground is subtracted from your total time (including takeoff and landing rolls). What's left is your air time. Longest air time wins.
@JailDoctor13 жыл бұрын
Kool KJZI Yeah, that was good.
@ammonmangum88323 жыл бұрын
It should be a timed event. All time on the ground counts against you...(negative time)...land and turnaround should have a land short and long line....( Must complete turn around in between.). This will really test the most skilled pilots...

For much cheaper long lasting tires, why not employ 4X4 off-road, or drag strip style, beadlock wheels with beadlock rings bolted onto the wheels? These would hold heavy treaded off-road tires that would take a long time to wear out. Weight issue?
@erikjensen77043 жыл бұрын
Okay, I think this format needs to be one way, you have to be off the ground before the start line, who ever touches down past the finish line but before the scratch line last is the winner. What do you think
