This song is perfectly used in the movie "She's All That" (1999). Also, it's possibly the greatest "sappy" love song of all time. I never get tired of hearing this song and this is one of those magical songs that make you feel something or remember a memory that never existed.

It does remind me of a lovely girl I fell in love with 1,000 years ago when I first laid eyes on her...Joann, she was 17 and I was 19. I'm 70 now. I met her in 1973 and this song was released in the 90s, and yet it reminds me of her sweet soul and kind-hearted ways. Like the song and the singer soft, airy and sweet. Swing, swing!

A sixpence was 2 and a half pence in old money before the UK decimalised in the early 70's. The coin was used and a UK 5 pence looks similar. I got a sixpence for my pocket money when I was 5 years old in 1975.

This band was hired to be the praise band for my church's youth sleep away camp one week circa like summer of 1999 or 2000. They were so down to earth and cool. They did some really cool acapella beat box type stuff kinda like Pentatonix later would do. They do a great cover of How Soon Is Now iirc as well. I'm so glad you covered them!

I love this band. I first saw them on a Christian music video channel and bought their album and then a few years later I saw them in person doing a tour of Christian book stores with a short acoustic set. One of the songs they did was "Kiss Me" from their then, newest album. As soon as I heard it I thought this had hit written all over it. Sure enough, a few months later it was re-released to a wider audience and then put in a movie and it became as big a hit as I expected. The teaming of musician/songwriter Matt Slocum and singer Leigh Nash has made many wonderful songs but this one just has the best hook of them all. At the bookstore I was able to talk to Leigh and she was as sweet in person as her voice would make you believe. I got to see them a year or so later with the full band at a bigger venue and they put on a fantastic show. I'm so glad you got to this group and hope to see you react to some other Christian bands from the 90s that crossed over into the mainstream as well like Jars of Clay, Switchfoot, and Lifehouse.

It’s a Cinderella story of a rich popular teenager who makes a bet with a friend that he can get Laney Boggs to get in enough shape to be invited to the prom by this popular boy. It’s a great movie and you should watch it on Friday. I love this song but there are some other great dance songs in it!

Sixpence also had a completely different (black & white) video for this song - a Paris version - which featured Leigh (singer), Matt (guitarist, lyricist) and Dale (drummer) biking around Paris. It was an homage to French filmmaker Francois Truffaut and his film 'Jules et Jim'. Very charming. Check it out.

Its always been a song I liked and I liked the band too. The name of the group, as others have said, came from the writing of CS Lewis, the sixpence representing a small value coin. It was an interesting and much loved small silver coin. The old British currency system was divided into pounds , shillings and pence (the pence, being denoted by a d) So the sixpence was 6d. In 1971 a new decimal currency system, with new coins was introduced with 100 pence in the pound and new pence were denoted by a p instead of the old d. However the sixpence was retained and continued to be used in the new system until about 1980, but its value was 2.5p (£0.025). So the sixpence was 6d or 2.5p. Even although it was worth 2.5p in the new system, everyone continued to call it a "sixpence". I still have a few of them. 🙂

You commented on the accordion sounding beautiful in this song... One of my favorite songs with accordion is Marc Anthony's song "You Sang To Me". There are multiple versions of the song... The short "radio edit" version had much of the accordion part edited out. The longer versions have more. It comes in towards the end of the song.

So I won't reiterate the name that so many have already commented about apart that it comes from a place of humbly giving what you have to God in terms of talents and gifts because God was the source of your talent or gift in the first place. I started with their debut album back in 1994 called The Fatherless and The Widow which was rather folk, acoustic, coffeehouse type alternative (key song: Trust). Their sound was way different with a more rock and artsy alternative on This Beautiful Mess released in 1995 (fave songs on that album: Love, Salvation & the Fear of Death; Within a Room Somewhere; Disconnect). Many of these would make for some good "female Friday" songs. Kiss Me was one of a couple of big hits on their '97 self-titled album along with a cover of "There She Goes". They had changed record companies from R.E.X. records on the first two to Squint Entertainment, a record label started and run by musician and songwriter Steve Taylor in 1997. Steve Taylor would also be an excellent unusual Christian artist to listen to some songs/albums.

As a kid growing up in the 90s I was very lucky to do a lot of travelling to different countries for holidays, and if there was a Planet Hollywood in the area (global restaurant chain similar to Hard Rock Cafe, mostly all gone now) we would always make a point in going. They always had a playlist of music videos and while there were quite a few songs, the playlist was always the same. There are a few songs that every time I hear it always takes me back to Planet Hollywood in some corner or the world, having an amazing time with my family. This song is one of them. They are from New Braunfels, TX between Austin and San Antonio. I was actually working at the Wal-Mart warehouse in New Braunfels when this song came out. Then 20 years later I saw Leigh Nash solo at a small bar in Knoxville (where I live the past 20 yrs) singing this song and she still sounded fantastic. The young woman bartender, perked up when this song started like she had no idea her bar just hired the lead singer of this song to play there. It was pretty cool to see Nash is such a small venue, then seeing a young bartender suddenly realize who she was watching.

Just WOW! I already LOVE the song, but watching both of your reactions just adds so much to it. As I’ve said before, the pure joy on your faces listening to music shows the passion for all genres of music that would make the world a better place if we all loved it this way. And as you said, you can’t help but be overwhelmed by a sense of romance in this song. It’s how I feel about it. one of my favorite bands, and one of my favorite songs FROM said band!! glad you enjoyed it.... strictly speaking, the fellar on the right end of the screen is playing an english concertina Concertinas are a group of instruments similar but distinct from accordions. The difference being that the buttons on a concertina operate parallel to the bellows of the instrument whereas the buttons of an accordion operate perpendicular to the bellows. The sound OF the concertina in the song is authentic (probably produced a bit in the study, but still).
