@StanSwan15 күн бұрын
So the story goes. Only Ray told that story and John and Robby went along with it as it is a good story. Ray never let the facts get in the way of a great story. The Doors did a lot of TV shows and never more than once. They did not want to be the "house band" for Ed Sullivan. They wanted to do Winters show and the Smother's Brothers. They also did not want to make trips to New York with all their equipment, engineers, and producer in tow. I am sure there is some truth to the story Ray told but I never seen anything to prove a ban. Ed's son in law lost his poopy and yelled some things. Sullivan would have had Satan on if it got ratings.

The Doors were banned from The Ed Sullivan Show, but not from TV entirely. There are clips of them performing songs live from their LP "The Soft Parade" on public television. Then they appeared on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour performing "Touch Me" and "Wild Child" where they sang live with the instrumental backing mostly recorded, except for the sax solo on "Touch Me" which was live. The Smothers Brothers show (I watched every week) presented a lot of rock groups that you didn't see often elsewhere on TV, such as Jefferson Airplane, Steppenwolf, The First Edition, Donovan.....and a memorable ear-shattering performance by The Who. The Doors generally didn't go for TV dates at that time but they made an exception for the Smothers Brothers. (The Smothers show got censored and eventually cancelled by CBS .) Robby Kreiger was the main writer for the song. He said he wanted it to start with as many different chords as he could cram into that intro.

The difference was that the Stones wanted to come back to the Ed Sullivan show again, which they did.
