@BILLIONDOLLAR BABY. Seriously? Only a fool tries to rewrite history. Any history. The facts are that the fans of rock music and rock dj’s “were at war” with those that loved the dance appeal of disco. This escalated with the release of Saturday Night Fever. By the end of the ‘70s, disco by and large lost out. Name the incident that helped bring this opposition to a head. John Denver’s popularity exploded through the 70s. Lightfoot also did well. James Taylor, Carly Simon, Carol King, and others while not strictly acoustic did extremely well. How did you come upon this myth?

I think the word Lex is looking for is “haunting”. It’s sad and ironic that he died in a plane crash not long after this song was released. And Brad is right about it having a classical feel. Listening to this gives you a sense of what it must have been like to listen to Beethoven when his music was new. It’s that special and the world became a dimmer place when his light stopped shining. Much love ❤️

"Haunting" is good. Or possibly "melancholy", though that implies a sadness that isn't quite appropriate, as it's a really joyful song generally. However, Lex's "hourglass" analogy is 100% on point. And was probably intentional. A sort of quasi-word painting with the instrumentation.

They are actually both right. It is hauntingly beautiful, "spooky" as Lex put it, because of the minor key that the majority of the song is written in. Another great band to check out in a similar vein is the Classics IV. Not only do they (ironically) have a song aptly titled "Spooky", they have others as well, like Traces of Love.

Croce was a first gen Sicilian-American. His guitar playing, especially in this song, has qualities of that old world minstral style. Time in a Bottle has that sweet melancholy feel. A love song with that hint of "not enough time"/"life's too show" vibe. Hauntingly bitter sweet.

I am the one left in my original family. it is odd but in 1974 round the campfire I sang this to all of them on my twelve string guitar. I had just graduated high school two months earlier never dreamed I would be the last one left. My younger brother died two years ago. Brings tears to my eyes now thinking of that night when this plays. Photographs and Memories is another one is just like this, can be interpreted as a loss, not just a break up.

The lyric: But there never seems to be enough time, a lesson learned in life.. Make the time, if you have something to say, say it, if you want to do something, do it. Do it now, now will never come again. Take it from me, a man full of regrets because I didn't say or do when I had the chance, I always thought there would be time but I let it slip away.

Your absolutely right, take another breath and what was now is gone forever! I was coming up on my termination date from fibrosis of the lungs and with just six months to spare I got the transplant phone call I was desperately waiting for in 2020. I’m in pretty good shape now and boy I can’t take anything for granted now, especially with grandkids! Taking my family on a big trip to Colorado this fall to spend time in the mountains hiking and fishing. I look around my house all the time now and wonder what all this stuff is for and that money I could have spent on more vacations for myself or with my two daughters and the grandkid’s! It just totally changed my outlook on life! When you are young you think about future plans in 15-20 years, and as you get older, you have no idea if you’ll ever make it another 15-20 years!

It's a melancholy love song because it's about the recognition that love is not eternal but is more precious because it is constrained by time, which is limited. It can't be saved in a bottle and each day can be experienced only once and then it's irretrievably gone. After looking around he has found what makes his days precious and he is sad to know that those days will be fewer than he wants them to be. The love he has found makes him yearn for an eternity that he hadn't wanted previously.

The song is made more Haunting when you learn Jim Croce died almost exactly 3 months before the song's release. Jim died in a plane crash in September 1973 and Time in a Bottle was released in November of the same year. In less than a year and a half it will have been a half century since Jim Croce his accompanist Maury Meuhleiser and three others died in the tragic manner they did. The one silver lining is his beautiful music lives on to be admired and enjoyed for the eternity of mankind.

There is something spooky w/the strings they are playing on the guitar. Jim Croce wrote this love song for his toddler son, Brad & Lex. At the time Jim decided to walk away from his 'overnight success' to live the life he wanted with his son and wife, he performed a last concert which he 'owed'; to a small community that he had previously needed to cancel. Tragedy struck after that concert to a 'small' audience in a small 'insignificant' town. The plane traversing him back to his loving family crashed and Jim Croce died. An incredibly ironic haunting song that rattles my soul each time I hear it...

A musician in a similar vein is RODRIGUEZ. " COLD FACT " AND " COMING FROM REALITY " are two albums he is famous for. Some of you will be aware that a Documentary was made about RODRIGUEZ after he was found working on a building site. In regards to JIM CROCE, he would be one of the most lamented musicians of all time. The sadness and tragedy of his death, makes me choke with emotions and hold back the tears. In 1973, when the News came through on Australian media that he had died in a plane crash, I was only 12 yrs old. Jim had only just broken through into the Commercial World of Music. His Hit songs were being played on 2SM radio in Sydney. The word that Lex is looking for is ' engaging ' Jim's voice and story telling was very engaging.

My first exposure to music was the oldies. Jim Croche, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Loving Spoonful, The Beatles. Oddly, I think that's what helped my transition with metal and rock as I got older and had more control over what I listened to. I very rarely listened to pop unless it was on the radio. Jim Croche and Billy Joel are some of my all time comfort singers, along with James Taylor and Carole King.

It is spooky. I grew up as a young child, hearing this song, learning about loss in the early 70's..and then Jim. It never scared me away, but rather, reminded me of how awesome, life is.

What's spooky is that it's a song about recognizing the life time you're given is limited, so love and live fully... and then he immediately died before they even got this released onto the radio, where it became a monster hit. It's amazingly beautiful.

It’s an absolutely BEAUTIFUL song! Jim Croce was an excellent songwriter, it’s a shame he died so young. It would have been great to see what else he had to offer the world.

Love song to his then infant son. Croce had spent many years on folk circuit so when this album started taking off it was huge for him. He heard success of first single only before plane crash.

Sept. 20, 1973 His last show played in my hometown: Northwestern State University's Prather Coliseum in Natchitoches, LA. Chartered flight failed to achieve altitude and clipped a tree several hundred yards off the end of the runway. Croce was 30 years old...

It's beautiful and romantic but there is definitely a haunting quality to it, and I think what it is is that this song has an "on his deathbed" feel to it. Like, sure he's lived a good life, second verse talking about how all his wishes were fulfilled by this girl, but he's finding himself still feeling this overwhelming sense of regret and a ravenous desire for more time because there was so much more he wanted to do, so much more he wanted to experience, and quite simply he's not ready to leave her. Or perhaps I've read this in reverse and it is she who is passing away (or already has) and this is his lament to losing her too soon. As beautiful and romantic as the song is there is also this undeniable tone of sadness and mourning to it as well. Something so much deeper than simply "I love this girl and want to spend time with her." A desperation, a knowledge that their time together is being cut short and he'd do anything to get more.

You two are just...just...fabulous. I laughed out loud at Lex with her "spooky" and Brad's like "are you crazy" look. She sees the world in her own way and I love that it's different than most. Great reaction! You should listen to his song "Operator" if you haven't already.
