The song is about his ex-girlfriend who's living with his (ex) friend, Ray. He was trying to connect with them to tell them (and to convince himself) that he's ok..that he's over it, when in reality he really isn't. Great song. You should give it another listen with the context in mind.

He definitely was not a one-hit wonder, he was the real deal. As kids, my brother and I combined our allowances and bought three of his albums. A very expensive thing to do as kids. I can tell you EVERY song that guy wrote is an amazing experience. Needless to say, reading about his plane crash in the morning paper was a shock and his death really affected us. Still does.

Back in the day you could ask the operator from the phone company to help you place a call. He was probably calling from a phone booth and asking for the operator's help calling his old ex best friend Ray. But even when he wrote down the number she gave him he couldn't read it because of the tears he was shedding. In the end he decided not to place the call and told the operator to keep the dime - the cost of the phone call...

I wonder if you can still do that from a land line. I doubt cell phones can. Once upon a time, you dialed 0 for the operator and 00 for the international operator. Of course I assume the song is talking about a pay phone, but good luck finding one of those any more.

Jim Croce was one of the best singer/songwriters to emerge in the 70's post "Tapestry" era of rock. He had a sweet soothing voice; his life and career were tragically cut short due to a plane crash. Hits best hits include: "Operator", " Photographs And Memories", "I've Got A Name", " I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song", the standards, " Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown" and "You Don't Mess Around With Jim". His crowning achievement was "Time In A Bottle". A great, legendary artist who is sorely missed. R.I.P.

Per Songfacts Ingrid Croce, who was married to Jim from 1966 until his death in 1973, told Songfacts the story of this song: "'Operator' is one of my favorite songs. I think it's a pretty interesting song in the way in which it was composed. It's probably like a lot of songs of Jim's, but it's one that I think a lot of people relate to in a whole bunch of different ways. Jim and I had gotten married in 1966, and we had been waiting for him to go in the service. He was a National Guard, which he had joined with the hope that he would not be sent over, and he would be able to continue his education and his music career. So he signed up for the National Guard, and just as soon as we decided to get married - in August of 1966, the week before our little wedding - he got a letter that said that he would be leaving within two weeks for his National Guard duty down in South or North Carolina, so he was leaving with a very heavy heart. My dad had been very ill and shortly after that passed away. And we had just waited... wanted to get married and have some time to be together after all those years of waiting. All of the sudden here he is the National Guard, and Jim is not very good with authority. And he's in the South, and they were not very good with making pasta. He was missing good food, he was missing me, he was missing life in general. He's one of the few guys I think who went through basic training twice... he really couldn't follow the system. He'd always find things that were funny, like a handbook that he put together in dealing with the service with a whole bunch of quotes of how to deal with people in the Army. But anyway, he was standing there in the rain at a payphone. And he was listening to these stories of all these guys, the 'Dear John' stories, that were standing in line waiting their turn in the rain with these green rain jackets over their heads - I can just picture it, all of them in line waiting for their 3-minute phone call. Most of them were getting on the phone and they were okay, but some of them were getting these 'Dear John' letters, or phone calls. I think that was the most important aspect of the song, because it was just so desperate. You know, 'I only have a dime' and 'You can keep the dime' because money was very scarce and very precious, and I think if you look at the words to the song there are so many aspects of our generation that are in it. 'Operator, could you help me place this call?' I'm picturing Jim out in the rain and this long line of guys where they're really trying to reach somebody. It was hard to get through, so you always had the operator do it for you."

Lyrically, the song is about a man whose woman ran off with his best friend and moved to LA. There was a time as recently as the early-mid 90’s you could dial 0 and ask a telephone operator to connect you with another person if you did not have to complete number. It was called a person to person call. )The Average White Band had a hit called Person to Person). In fact, he really doesn’t want to talk to her. He just needs someone to Listen to him pour out his heart. It ends up being the operator after he decides not to place the call.

A musician in a similar vein is RODRIGUEZ. " COLD FACT " AND " COMING FROM REALITY " are two albums he is famous for. Some of you will be aware that a Documentary was made about RODRIGUEZ after he was found working on a building site. In regards to JIM CROCE, he would be one of the most lamented musicians of all time. The sadness and tragedy of his death, makes me choke with emotions and hold back the tears. In 1973, when the News came through on Australian media that he had died in a plane crash, I was only 12 yrs old. Jim had only just broken through into the Commercial World of Music. His Hit songs were being played on 2SM radio in Sydney. The word that Lex is looking for is ' engaging ' Jim's voice and story telling was very engaging.

Jim Croce is nostalgic like Simon and Garfunkel or the Forrest Gump soundtrack or the Beatles. . . . I am 38 years old today, and I feel like I am 10 when I hear this. Every family road-trip included this song. When I hear it now as an adult and it hits me so hard, I realize that it means more to me than it does to my parents. . . . It is an example of how children absorb and feel more than adults do. Parents put on whatever in the car for a long drive without thinking much of it. . . But the kids in the car absorb every word and keep it with them for life.

The song is about his ex-girlfriend and best friend running off together to LA so in the song, it's his "best old ex-friend Ray". He's calling the operator to help him get in touch with them so that he can catch up and let them know that he's doing fine and he's over them being together now. But he's clearly not over it, every time he tries to call them (there's something in his eyes) which are his tears, so he can't read the number. One can choose something from each stanza of this song and relate to it. Although I love this entire song, the second stanza when he begins to cry and he ends with, "I think about the love that I thought would save me." You can dwell on that one sentence and let it flood your mind with many different memories. I had two of his albums when I started listening to him in 1972 and 1973 when I was 11 and 12 years old. His CD is still on top of my table today.

According to Jim Croce the song was inspired by his time in the National Guard. He was standing in the rain, lining up at a payphone. As he waited, he heard all the ‘Dear John’ stories of the other guys as they lined up for their three-minute phone call. Ingrid Croce, Jim's wife, wrote the same thing in a book about Jim that also said “Bad Bad Leroy Brown,” was inspired by one of Jim Croce’s platoon sergeants at Fort Jackson and a fellow GI he met during his time at Ft. Dix, N.J..

On this episode of Brad and Lex, Brad is so entranced by the magnate performer that was Jim Croce he is unable to follow the relatively simple but emotional story of man wanting reach out to his ex and his best friend who took her away and tell them (but more importantly himself) that he's fine... even though it's a lie. Lex chimes in with her usual takes on the sound and how she appreciates the genius of the song writing. And it was perfect. Love you guys ❤️

My favorite artist of all time, at 42 I listen to everything from Slipknot to 311 to Volbeat and Blink 182, he still holds that special place as a songwriter.

I think that Jim C. is very relatable and his choice of songs to perform tug at your heart. a lot of us have experienced the pain of your bf/gf being taken by a best friend or sister/brother . the heartbreak of lost love and betrayal of a friend cuts very deep.

My Father went to college with Jim Croce. He was a local boy, who hit it big (eventually) with his unique style of songwriting & talented voice. My parents would play his records in the house when I was a kid. Good memories.👍

Beautiful song but you two need to listen again because the lyrics are super poignant and rather brilliant. This is simple story about a guy whose girlfriend has left him for his best friend. So he's lost the two closest people in his life through betrayal. He needs to talk to someone, but the very people he would normally reach out for guidance are the same ones who have caused his dispair in the first place.

You got it Brad! That's exactly what she meant. Some artist got a song or songs that "suck." But Jim Croce, James Taylor and Carol King, Laura Nyro. You get artist that are perfect. Frankie is an Icon, but! only in the 60's.
