In and outside of Doctor Who I feel that the level of writing for Day of The Doctor rivals Breaking Bad/Wire quality TV writing. The way it's able to feel as much like the 10th, 11th and War Doctor's story (giving each a deep arc in this that also deeper contextualizes their (or 9's for WD' s) futures at once without ever feeling like just 11 & Friends is in a word.... I don’t care what anybody else says but John Hurt was the best British actor of their time. Liked before the voiceover even started! This was a special treat on this special day. Ellie expressed all the things I've struggled to put into words in the eleven years since it aired. That's not nearly as easy as she makes it look, just riffing off-script like that. But you really feel the passion she has for the show. It's very familiar to me. And let's not forget the unenviable task Danny had, piecing this together into a logical order, because you know what was actually filmed was quite a bit longer, and by the way, I would pay good money to watch the unedited version. That would be a good way to spend Doctor Who Day. Thank you for this. Next Retro Ups and Downs: City of Death.

Still one of my favourite ever Doctor Who episodes. Saw it in a packed cinema in Boston and have so many special memories - though The Curator's "I rather think you might" still gives me the most goosebumps. The audience's pin drop intake of breath before we'd even seen Tom was spectacular. Also, I've still got a 3D telly, and got to give a shout out to them filming it in 3D because it is even more jaw-droppingly gorgeous to watch in that format. Also, can we take a moment to look at the cinema box office on this ep too - It only had simulcast screenings yet it's total box office (more than £10m globally) meant it was quite literally the biggest thing at the box office in the world that day... and all from single screenings rather than dozens per day too! The Day of the Doctor?!?! D*** right it was! 😁

I'm from Rome. For work, I have traveled the whole world. I have also lived in 6 different cities, in 4 different countries, across 3 different continents. I watched this in Milan, with a Greek Whovian flatmate, who was also away from home (she shrieked with glee when she saw me walking around the apartment with my "The Angels Have The Phone Box" T-shirt, and we bonded over Dr Who). At the time, I had been away from home for 8 years, and I was waiting to be transferred back to Rome. So when the "home, the long way around" speech hit, I started sobbing like a baby. 😭

Excellent analysis (except the down (only for me personally, appropriately : I'd never heard of Gavin and Stacey)). Apparently Tom Baker spilt the beans about his appearance in the 50th on a radio program a bit before. Which I missed, so (personally) it was still a lovely surprise. To add to the editing up: it was great fun seeing it in the cinema in 3D and impressive that they didn't do the usual trick of absolutely everything popping out of the screen at you (possibly with the exception of the Doctor's seeing the fez - and probably others that I've forgotten (let me know)). I vaguely recall Moffat talking about that in an interview. The 3D version is (or was) available on blu-ray. Luckily, the disc also has a standard 2D version: I have the disc and a player, but no 3D display device; 3D is dead (yet again - hey ho). Elsewhere in the comments, people have noted with anguish the "my mum's Doctor was Tom Baker" comment. Well, *mine* was Jon Pertwee (I might have caught the end of Patrick Troughton: I forget). That makes me old, I suppose. Well, older than I was, at any rate. Keep up the good work (and sorry for the plethora of parentheses (which alliterates awesomely, don't you think?)). PS. Not all *actors* who played the Doctor at the time of the 50th were there: Hurndall did a First Doctor in one of the multi-Doctor anniversary specials after Hartnell had died. Picky point, I should stop now. But... PPS. Re. sonic screwdriver. Wasn't the line "what are you going to do - assemble a cabinet at them?" a nod back to what River Song said when she and the Doctor were facing up to the Silence? I'm sure Ellie will know. PPPS. This comment is far too long (and this doesn't help).
@ozdocwho51773 күн бұрын
I have seen Gavin and Stacy, but I have never even picked up on the actress having been Stacy. I just think that Ellie was being way too picky. We all have our Foibles, though. Also, wasn't there a comment from Captain Jack about the sonic similar to that in his first story? There are so many nods in this story that you don't pick up on some of them.

Re the motorbike ... how often has the Doctor parked his TARDOS in someone's living room? More than once, for sure lol ... he doesn't drive a car or a motorbike, he drives a TARDIS, and he parks it wherever he likes, including living rooms lol Also, I'm a Canadian who has actually seen Gavin & Stacey and loved it but didn't have a problem with the casting for Elizabeth I. To your final point, I'd love to see some TRUE "Retro Ups & Downs" from the Classic series. A great place to start, IMO, might be the first Pertwee story, Spearhead from Space which was very much the template for the first episode of the Eccleston reboot. I think you could either do an Ups & Downs for each episode, but a better format might be to do both in one, including all the callbacks and similarities between the two episodes. But I also think there are TONS of other episodes from the classic run of all the Doctors from Hartnell through McCoy that would make great Ups & Downs ...

How do you know the TARDIS doesn't have handholds underneath? How many times have we actually seen the bottom of the TARDIS? (Spyfall Pt 1 is about the only time we've seen it raised up, when the Doctor was working underneath it and draining the waterslides. Also, the "All thirteen!" moment is great, but we never did find out _why_ Hartnell through to Ecclestone knew to BE there at that point, being pivotal to something they didn't know was going to happen. (I did wonder if we might get a moment in "Twice Upon a Time", where Capaldi's Doctor inputs something into Hartnell's TARDIS controls when no one else is looking, but that might have been an easter egg too far)

Love to see more retro ups and downs, I suggest The Eleventh Hour it's one of my favorite episodes and it's brilliant. I can't imagine how many ups an episode with River Song in it will get with Ellie review it 😂 The Day of the Doctor was amazing, pretty much agreed with everything that Ellie said. It was an event, so much hype leading up to it and imo it lived up to the hype. It felt like a movie not just a normal episode, it felt like Christmas day on that day. It was special that 50th year.

The motorcycle driving into the tardis was an homage to the 8th doctor's only full episode.

That is so true. I have never picked that up before. Thanks for pointing that out.
