That's quite a strong character for that servant girl to have. In those days the stigma of illegitimacy was something we can't really relate to now, but it would have taken quite something for a young woman to stand up in court and declare that she'd had an affair with her employer, and to get her family and friends to back her up with testimony. I have an ancestor who had a child out of wedlock, possibly to the master of the house where she worked, but she went to great lengths to hush it up, even lying on the census records, presumably because of the shame of it, so the woman in this programme had some gumption to declare it in a courtroom and face the probable accusations.

My great-great-grandfather was born out of wedlock in 1855 and given mother's surname. She was from a large poor transient farm family. I had a male cousin take a Y-DNA test and we discovered his paternity! His biological father came from an affluent family. His childhood is still a big mystery.
