In a smaller german town, Schwäbisch Gmünd, the new public open air bath is named after Bud Spencer for may be ten years. As a young man , under his real name Carlo Pedersoli , he took part in a german/ italian swimming competition as member of italian team in then existing bath of the town.

That's because the German translation/interpretation of his movies is exceptionally good. I don't speak Italian but I've seen most of his movies that were filmed in English in the original version as well as the dubbed German version. The German versions are practically completely different movies. I don't like to watch dubbed movies and usually before watching a movie in a dubbed version I rather don't watch it at all. But the German versions of his movies are brilliant. So much better and funnier than at least the English originals. Whenever I watch one of his movies one quote from a completely different movie genre comes to my mind: "You've not experienced Shakespeare until you have read him in the original Klingon". Makes perfect sense now: you've not experienced a Bud Spencer movie until you've seen it in the original German version. 😂

Sandra Bullock and Mark Strong were clearly the best speakers, but that's not surprising since both have a parent from Germany (Edit: Strong's father is of course from Austria and not Germany). You can still hear their dialect relatively clearly, but in one or two sentences they almost sound like native speakers. Considering that he only learned it through singing and acting, Christopher Lee's German was pretty good.
@Danisachan
@Danisachan Жыл бұрын
Ooooooh, there is actually a pretty strong theory that Christopher Lee was that good in German, because he was not only an activice soldier but - most specifiically - a German translator, for Britain in WW2. How true that is I don't know. He seems always pretty reluctant to speak in German though. And interestingly (unrelated) enough, he knew exactly that men don't scream when getting stabbed in the back (like in his Saruman role where he argued with Peter Jackson about that scene). That man has clearly seen some things in his life. That much can be said.

Leos mother is german and he regularly visited his granny whilst she was still alive. But his German seems to have lacked a bit. Mark Stron and Sandra Bullock are very good German speakers, very fluent with not to much of an English accent. Sandra Bullock and Mark Strong sounded like native speakers with regional accents. Though you could tell that Sandra speaks English on a daily basis, because she struggled with some words and literally translated some English terms into German. Even though Mark said his German was rusty, to me he just sounded totally German. I found Donna Summer's German great, too. She has an American accent and you can tell German is not her native language, but I think she would get along really well in German speaking countries. About "deutsche Familie": she said that she met many, many people (in Germany) who are now her German family. Christopher Lee was great, too. I'm always totally fascinated with (some) British people speaking German, because not only do they suddenly sound totally different, but also just like someone who could be your German neighbour (with an English accent).😅 John Kerry did good, too. Sir Peter was incredibly intelligent and spoke at least eight languages fluently. Four, however, already due to his origins. His grandfather was a German of Russian descent, his grandmother had German and Senegalese roots (which was a French colony at the time). He was born in England, but at that time his father was a German diplomat. Only when his father refused to produce an Aryan certificate in 1935 (which would have revealed that his mother was not only half Senegalese, but also half Jewish) was he dismissed from the civil service and emigrated with his family to England. As a result, Sir Peter learned German, French and Russian from his father in his youth, in addition to English.

Sir Peter Ustinov did many interviews in German, almost fluently with a pretty small accent. In one of those interviews he told, that he had a german nanny. So if he told the truth there, this certainly would have helped him to get an easier access to the German language.@@arthur_p_dent

Mark Strong totally sounds like a native speaker, Sandra Bullock is of German descent and surprisingly still has a Bavarian accent. Leo has a German grandmother, but doesn't really speak German and Christopher Lee was known to be multilingual. Who's missing here is Kim Cattrall who got famous for her potrayal of Samantha in "Sex and the City". She's almost fluent as she used to live in Frankfurt with her partner for quite a while. I didn't know about Donna Summer being able to speak German and I'm blown away by Mark Strong not having any noticable accent. Mads Mikkelsen and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister from Game of Thrones) are also fluent in German, but that's nothing special as they are Danish. Another candidate is Michael Fassbender, who understands German, but isn't fluent. Bruce Willis was born in Germany and has family in Rheinland-Pfalz, but it's doubtable, that he ever knew more than a few German words. Seth Meyers, Terence Hill and Sir Peter Ustinov speak or spoke German too. Rutger Hauer (Blade Runner) was Dutch and didn't have any trouble handling the German language as well. Tina Turner spoke German too, as she had to learn the language in order to aquire the Swiss citizenship. She lived in Switzerland for 30 years.

Sandra Bullock spend the first 12 years living in Germany with a German mother, so she's basically a native speaker. Her German is VERY good and has that distinctive "fränkisch" accent. Judging from the footage Mark Strong is probably a fluent speaker of German language, as he has only a slight accent, that I might even have missed if I didn't knew who he was. These two are probably the ones who are the most confident and capable speakers of German language amongst the shown celebrities in this video.

Leonardo’s German used to be quite good as a kid, and he visited his grandmother often. I remember him taking part in a breakdance contest one summer back in the 80’s while there which he won. His grandmother died in 2008 and that’s the last time he visited the village she lived him. I guess speaking German only when visiting his grandmother, and the fact that his mother didn’t bother to raise him bilingually are the reasons why Leonardo’s German isn’t as good as for example Sandra’s. Another actress who speaks excellent German is Rebecca de Mornay, btw.

Also Christopher Lee was a nice showcase. It was noticable that he may not have the highest word count but his pronounciation is very close to perfect. Respect for someone who only occasionaly dealt with this language. I also liked Donna Summer. Her german was not the best but she used handpicked words (Not just a set of common phrases) and what she said was coherent. She talked about Munich so I guess she is on her very own journey to learn german. Ofcourse repect to all others but those 3 stick out to me.

I was raised in a big Multicultural area of Sydney. It was my job in grade school to teach new Australian’s English so I speak a little of a lot of language’s. I didn’t realise I still knew much until I went to an Italian page and I realised about halfway through a post I was reading Italian and turning it to English. I taught my first daughter to count in 4 languages at two years old and to speak many words in those languages. She was very bright and started school at 4. I got a letter asking me to come in as my daughter was stupid and couldn’t speak properly. I love those kinds of notes. I arrived and my daughter was alone with her teacher as it was lunchtime. She told her to count to 10 and she did perfectly in German. Then I told her in Italian to do it again in Italian, she did. Then I looked at her teacher and told her to ask in English or French because she had already done it perfectly in German and Italian. Teacher was really sorry. Now her daughter who is about to complete her Masters degree as a research Scientist and has taught 3rd year Biology and Chemistry while she was doing it. Besides her Bachelor’s and Honours Degree her reseach will not be funded by Australia so she must work overseas. She also got separate degree’s in Biology and German and Germany have just made an offer for her. She has already been published last year but we have to let her go. My two youngest grandchildren who just turned 16 and 17 are both fluent in three languages. They use them when they don’t want their parents to understand. They speak English, French and their favourite because most of the world don’t speak it is Canadian Inuit or what we called Eskimo. They went to school on the Polar Cap. There wasn’t an English school. They make me laugh. I think my grandchildren are more entertaining than that video.😂

I think he was given a sheet of paper with some German words and was told how pronounce them. So he is merely imitating German. John Kerry probably used up all his German in those 10 seconds. It was completely out of context and perhaps just the usual stuff like "Dankeschön, bitteschön, Wiedersehen, noch ein Bier, kommen Sie her."* 😉 Sandra Bullock's speech was much longer and contained - as far as I remember - a number of jokes.
