This isn't the true nightmare, who is already dead at that point, it's a copy that the X parasite created. Nonetheless yeah, Nightmare is pretty tragic. Nightmare is just the green alien in the suit, it got trapped in there by the galactic federation who wished to create a bioweapon. The steel mask in it's first phase ? It was put there because the scientists couldn't handle it screaming. And if you've played Other M, where you fight the original Nightmare, IT SCREAMS A LOT once you destroy the mask. So yeah, it's gravity manipulator and lasers were put there for warfare purposes. Worst thing, is that even after Samus supposedly killed him in Other M, the galactic federation apparently retrieved it's body and managed to heal it up and put it in Fusion's space station for repair (The station basically shows every horrible thing the "good guys" federation has done. They retrieved the corpse of the Ridley clone they created and froze it, put this poor alien in a suit, locked it inside it and created the Nightmare, and of course, they cloned Metroids behind Samus' back. And when Samus discovers the hidden lab, the Federation wants to ELIMINATE her. Which is why she goes rogue at the end). When you go through Sector 3, you hear and see Nightmare flying in the background. It's theorized that this is the true Nightmare, who is running away from the x parasite, but eventually gets "assimilated" and the x clone wrecks havoc in the sector afterwards. So yeah, Nightmare didn't deserve any of this shit, and i don't know HOW the federation got their hands on it. Plus, apparently it's a child.

When I think of bosses in cramped areas, I think of the first part of the U-3 fight from Resident Evil 4. You have a limited time to shoot hidden switches and escape from three suspended crate rigs while U-3 attacks you from almost every angle while you're stuck between stacks of crates! Thankfully, Leon escapes to a place with more room to maneuver to actually fight the boss.

What's even more insulting about Drac's second form in Legacy of Darkness is that the original CV64 despite being inferior in most aspects, gives us a final form Dracula that is much more reasonable since you can move in 3D space around the desert area. It even has an ultimate attack resembling a huge mushroom cloud, but you can avoid it if you see it coming. On that topic and series, we also have Blackmore from Order of Ecclesia, who keeps you contained in a space less than half a screen that he then bombards with shadow meteors and claw swipes. This might be too annoying for you, but how about 'Bosses that are only difficult because of the evil camera'?

Fun fact about Gergoth: In Dawn of Sorrow, the Comet Kick will deal more damage the longer you're in the air, and since the transition of the second phase takes so long to reach the floor of the tower, you can use it to fall from the top to the bottom and deal somewhere in the realm of 200-400 damage depending on your setup.

It's not really a glitch as much as it is an oversight/exploit. The game is behaving exactly as intended, it's just that the wall separating the main area from the arena isn't high enough to block all projectiles, so it's possible to throw items over the fog.

Also capra demon's boss theme is used for another boss that has a claustrophobic arena: the centipede demon. Unless you can dismember his arm and get the orange charred ring, you have almost no room at all and this boss is enormous. It's a pain in the ass

Just a suggestion for boss analysis bosses, play Furi. It's a game made almost completely of boss fights, all of which are difficult in their own right, some more than others. (Looking at you, Burst, Edge, and Star) Also, nice choice with Nightmare, that was like the 3rd hardest boss in the game for me.

5:38 the odd reason is a technique called "psuedo-screw attack". When you perform it, your somersault can damage or kill some weak opponents or render you immune to some weak hitboxes. It's nothing compared to the real deal though, Screw Attack is one of the most damaging attacks Samus can perform.

Little comment about Skyblazer's second boss, Tarolisk (because yeah, the level isn't called "Tower of Tarolisk" for flavor only) - The third jump over it is actually doable without Comet Flash, and the appearance of the wall is there to help you. Jump on the wall so that Sky's lower feet is at the lowest part of the middle section of the wall, then jump over it at the right time (timing is quite tight) and go right as much as possible to make sure Tarolisk doesn't touch you while it begins going up the wall. There's no real need though. The first battle against it is at the end of the level, so you can either go back to one of the earlier levels for health right after it, and the second battle is in the middle of a very generous boss rush (with full health and half magic points between each boss)

Inner Agent 3. The original Agent 3 battle uses a spacious arena, gives time to cover turf on your first life, and uses low turf covering Specials. Inner Agent 3, on the other hand, shreds through your blue ground, uses a small arena with uncoverable pieces of cover, and gives nearly no time. Except on your first attempt, the second you step, shoot, or throw a bomb, Agent 3's Super Splashdown entrance starts and the fight begins.

25:00 Order of Ecclesia has a similar boss to this (the guy where the boss is his shadow) but the boss takes up 3/4 of the screen meaning you can literally only do two steps in front of you, almost all attacks take up the entire little space you have, and there is no free space above meaning you can’t meteor jump or dodge in any way. Another great example of a cramped boss, also from GBA Metroid, is Mecha Ridley in Zero Mission. Big guy takes up like 2/3 of the screen at minimum, and you only have the wall at your back to move around. Nightmare could get cramped in a 1x2 room, but Mecha Ridley makes sure you give him as much respect as Castlevania DS' Gergoth, if not more.

I would say another boss that fits this very well is Steelix from Pokémon Ranger the original one Steelix’s whole gimmick is his body hurts you and you have to draw loops as he takes up an extremely large space of the touchscreen, and your line is about barely able to circle him (unless you use the dark poke assist... it’s still hard with that considered)

If you ever do a second episode of this, i suggest Giant Clown from Rainbow Islands Extra. He floods the room with 4 enemies that bounce on the walls and platforms (8 if you're playing extra mode) and repleaces them when you kill 'em. Also, he does the same and is fucking huge. And you die in one hit.

I always hated Nightmare in Fusion. The buildup was great and the spritework looks amazing, but it's so dang hard in that third phase that a grew a hatred for him. That tower in the Undead Parish with a Black Knight you can't even see until you're right in front of it, the pit around the Darkroot Hydra, the wheel in Blighttown, etc. Tbh, I found DS1 overall not fun or even hard so much as frustrating and unforgiving, but maybe that's just me.

@@Dinoman972 correct, but most ds1 defenders will say "BuT Dats JUst a oNe TiMe tHiNg!", the hydra in particular is my least favorite, since you either hide behind rocks shooting the stupid thing or risk falling off because that last stupid head always ducks past the edge as for the black knight, I'd argue you can run away from him. Or just chain backstab because from didn't consider making an easily exploitable mechanic with no risk to be a bad idea... FOR EVERY DAMN GAME the only boss/enemy I actually like to backstab is sister Friede since her fight is an otherwise tedious slog with a fake "gotcha!" ending and cruel punishments for difficult-to-read attacks.

The build up to nightmare is straight up horror. Metroid has always had s horror vibe to me. There's just something really unnerving about them.

If there's one boss I think should be the poster boy of this trope, it's The Bloat from Binding of Isaac. Most bosses in the game already think the idea of personal space is daft (mainly Gurdy and Rag Mega), especially if they spawn in closet rooms, but the Bloat takes it up way too much. First, he has 2 eyeballs that bounce off each other around the room. Next, he has 8 way shots whenever he jumps. What's more, he can summon creep, which is blood on the floor that will damage you if you step on it. And most infamously, if you're in front or to either side of him, he'll use a super fast brimstone laser attack with no tell. He can do this as soon as the fight begins if you're unlucky enough to spawn to the left, right, or in front of him! And what's better, he only appears in Necropolis in Chapter 3, but in Chapter 4, he can appear in any floor, where all enemies now do a full heart of damage Castlevania 3 style! No matter how much room you've got, the Bloat will take up a LOT of space, and the only safe spots with him (above him, usually) won't help much, since he can jump up and join you at the top of the screen, and you'll have to lure him back down. He's one of the worst bosses in the game, to the point where there's an entire subreddit dedicated to people who hate him.
