It's all too easy to present myself as a negative person, I find it much easier (and more fun) to talk about the things I dislike than the things I love. It comes with the territory when you're English.
But the truth is, even though I've made seven Leave My Ears Alone! videos where I point out the video game sound effects and songs that were horrible or plain annoying to my ear drums, there are far more that I can't get enough of.
So for a change of pace, this is Leave My Ears Alone! The Reversal, where we're going over the sound effects from this medium I adore and why I do.
The original Don't Leave My Ears Alone: • Don't Leave My Ears Al...
The second Don't Leave My Ears Alone: • Don't Leave My Ears Al...

There is one sound in video games that will never fail to give me huge dopamine rushes: The sound of a successful parry in Elden Ring. The loud metallic sound, plus the sparks, and the enemy recoiling back as you prepare to jam your sword right into their vital organs. So satisfying to pull off against crucible knights.

I'm glad i'm not the only one who loves Mario's "Yeah! Hahaha!" from MK64 and Wario's scream from the first two Mario Party games. These two voice clips are so fun to listen to that i simply never get upset while playing these games because of them!

Wario also gives us 'D'oh, I missed!'. Music to my ears, so much so that when my brothers played Mario Party together we always made the 4th player Wario on Easy AI. He certainly seems to be the character who creates the most amusement through his own physical abuse if his games are any sign. It's also curious how most of the MP characters are far too nice to have much bite in their taunts... *except* for Wario ('LOSER!'), Waluigi ('You're lousy!') and Mario ('Hey, stinky!').

Given you mentioned Dragon Quest (which, ironically, I was replaying IX just now), there's always a sound effect that stands out more than the others to me from the entire series: The spell casting sound. It's so nice to hear. And it never changes through any games, either. Honorable mention to the critical spell version, you instantly feel that something is going to happen the moment it plays (if it's good or bad depends on the caster, lol). -This is totally unrelated to me battling the boss that literally only uses spell attacks ten minutes ago. Totally.-

My favourite SFX is the one that plays when you finish off a boss in Dragon Quest 9. It sounds super cathartic and lasts just long enough to let you bask in the glory. If music also count, I really like Legend of The Dark Saint. It feels like the game is congratulating you for finally getting Overlord Mode's Good Ending.

I love how that Wario exploding scene is a reference to Mr. Creosote exploding in The Meaning of Life. 😂 My older brother, Martin also loved throwing Lara Croft off of the floor of her own mansion using the dolphin dive. I also always imagined the sound of Mario when he gets burned in Mario 64 as a maniacal laugh. "My apple! Who do you think you are?!" always gets me since it 1st appeared on this channel.

I can understand that sort of nostalgia for something you've never experienced before. I get the same feeling when I see Windows 95 or games and websites from its era. I was born in 2003... It's not even like I had a really old computer to use; the earliest OS I remember using is WinXP. I have no idea how I get such a nostalgic feeling from before I was born

I remember always putting Wario in every game on the first two games because I found his screams hilarious. Speaking of satisfying sounds, being able to pull off a perfect Royal Guard in Devil May Cry has a very satisfying sound that never gets old to listen to, and it makes it all the sweeter if you manage to pull one off.

This is from a kind of obscure game, but the signature move from Wizard of Legend is one of the greatest dopamine hits in any game. The sound effect, the way the entire world slows down for an instant as if to say "woah, what did he just do?", and the absolute carnage that follows are a feast for the senses.

The Dragon Quest thing about "nostalgia for old things you only experienced recently" (poor way of wording it on my part but you get it) I get that for Phantasy Star Online 1 and it's general vibe and OST, I only experienced it in the past few years but I adore that aesthetic and the super chill techno vibe of the music... it's soooo good...

For me the most memorable sound effects have always been the menu soundeffects in games. Those seem to be the key for me to take me back to my childhood. To this day I distinctly remember what the menu sound effects from Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories, Devil May Cry, Dino Crisis, Dark Cloud, Jak and Daxter and many more sound like. It's always a nostalgia rush when I boot one of those games up and press around in the menus.

With Dragon Quest, it's the level up sound. It really makes you feel like you accomplished something. And also the Super Famicom version of the Dragon Quest 3 overworld theme. That just blows my mind with how bombastic and adventurous it sounds, that it really makes you *feel* like you're going on a globe-trotting quest to save the world. Out of all the DQ overworld themes I've heard so far, this is the one that speaks to me the most.

There are plenty of sounds that do it for me. 3 of which include, but are certainly not limited to: 1. The "alert" sound in the Dragon Quest ganes when the game gives you a question prompt.(i.e., "is this name correct? Y/N?") 2. The thumping "BOOM" when you parry an enemies attack in a Dark Souls game. 3. The sound of shots being deflected in the Space Harrier arcade game.

Because why not, here's some of my favorite SFX from games. Everybody's doin' it! - The throwing SFX from Super Mario Bros 2, which is my personal "yeet" noise before yeet was even a thing. - The weapon SFX from Final Fantasy Tactics, especially the thrusting weapons like spears and poles. - The sound of plasma guns being fired in the original Fallout games, especially the plasma rifle (or plasma caster in NV and 76). - The Phoenix Down SFX from Final Fantasy 7, specifically. That game's also got some other iconic SFX, such as the Sleep(el) spell. - The little SFX in some JRPGs where a "?" speech bubble shows up. Paper Mario is a great example of this. - *"Don't be a hater!"* for one of the female OC voice lines in Soul Calibur 6. I believe it's the Daring Adventurer one? The line so lame, but it grew on me for being funny to beat people up online with it. Especially as my OC who used it with Kilik's fighting style shouts that when using that style's super Critical Edge move. I like to think I'd caused some salt with online play using it. Honestly, it's my headcanon voice for a character of mine. Just wish they credited the custom characters' VAs. - Also Helpy's back breaking in FNAF Pizza Sim. Kinda like how Git loves Lara's neck snapping.

I always did love Toad's MK64 voice. Especially his big scream; it makes him sound like a victim in the OTHER famous game series abbreviated MK. And as much as I prefer Pratt for the movie-they ARE channeling the SMB Super Show with _his_ Mario voice, and the tone overall will be a bit more serious-Martinet's Mario voice does indeed work better for MK. Think of the N64's release as the start of Mario's second childhood. And you're going to talk nostalgic Sonic sound effects without mentioning the jump sound THAT'S RIGHT EFFING THERE?! :

Honestly, you're not far off about being brought back to a bit of media's era. The first time I've played Earthbound, I felt like it had been a childhood classic that I'd played on my mom's SNES. And I'd first played it in my mid teens on an emulator! Some people don't seem to like when media "dates itself", and I can get when it's tacky. But I don't believe any media, games or otherwise, are truly "timeless". They're absolutely time capsules in their own ways, and better for it.
