Awesome teaching!! One day I want to be a teacher. They did better than people in my grade which is 5th grade!! They also had good reading skills. It looks like they pick the words up quickly and they start to engage. Good job teaching :)

I am amazed how well your students are writing. I am a new teacher and I struggle with teaching writing to my first graders. Your strategy is just what I need to help me be successful in teaching writing. Thank you for sharing!

You are such a natural at teaching kinder. What a fantastic way of using kinesthetic motions to teach writing. Also, I love the variety of finger woos you used which makes each child feel special. I am going to try to use some of these techniques with the students I teach.

I attended a whole brain workshop last spring and it changed my kindergarten program for the better. We use the program above and it really does work. My class has many second language learning students and they were able to do this too.

Tracy Doverspike I have an entire class of ELL students. Have you been able to achieve a college level essay with them? I usually get them doing paragraphs, but boy would this be a challenge!! Their language skills are not as advanced as English speaking students'. I think just completing one would seriously take up 2 months to complete!!! 😱 lol
@tracydoverspike52557 жыл бұрын
It takes a long time but you can get there. I start writing on the first day of school and build it daily. My class hasn't made it to long paragraphs as those in the video but it's always a goal. We use Step Up to Writing as our official writing program and add this into it. I do love this program and see how much more my students can do. It does take a long time. We work on our animal research projects for the entire month of May. By the end they write and read their work. We do practice using "college talk" and show how to write what we think and say. I hope that helps.

Amazing how students can be trained at any age. Great job.
Holy cow! They can use commas correctly. Your teaching is really impressive. I'm only a substitute teacher, but I think I'll recommend this to some of the kindergarten teachers for whom I sub. In the meantime, I plan on having the next class I sub answer questions using complete sentences.

Wonderful video. When I write, I always orally say what I am going to write before I actually write it--to hear how it sounds, and saying it orally helps me to think. So many writing methods do not stress how important it is to orally rehearse what one is going to write. During this time, I also revise what I'm writing. Most writing teaches editing as a separate step (when it's an ongoing process). Love your variation on the ten finger . . . . and the scaffold teaching of the progression of the sentence building. Thanks. Very informative.

Hi! I’m a kindergarten teacher in Philadelphia! Just wondering how long you spend in each area of “talk” after it’s introduced. Does this span the whole year? Also, is there a whole brain writing curriculum that can be purchased?

Do you know if this was at the end of the school year for kinder??
R u using some American Sign Language with them? I love that u r talking about college to them as most students are so afraid of the idea of going to college even in high school that they don't go. I've read the books by Marva Collins who founded the "Westside Preparatory School" in Chicago and her method of teaching poor inner-city students required them to learn so much more rather than less. Her books are wonderful.

While the video shows each step in formulating a sentence, it doesn't show the actual writing. How do you go from orally practicing sentences to physically writing them? Where in the video is the WRITING process?
@mplum47969 жыл бұрын
In kindergarten, most "writing" activity is done on an oral level. It's not that they don't write, but for some lessons it's perfectly acceptable to do oral responses.
@mplum47969 жыл бұрын
V Goodan And it is simply a matter of having them write it on paper after that. At least that's what I do in my own class.

What did you say to the children at 1:40 "Let's give him a ________"
@datrahan9 жыл бұрын
how do you transfer that to the physical writing of the sentence?
@reddeer17588 жыл бұрын
I am assuming you start off teaching all these gestures orally (because that's what kindergarteners they know). Then later in the year when you do literary (shared writing and reading) you do the same gestures when you model. E.g. do a zoooo/finger gesture when you see or write a comma.
@tracydoverspike52557 жыл бұрын
yes, you practice orally for a long time. I did anyway. Every time we speak we stand and use "college talk". They love it and it helps move it into writing.

I find the use of oral language to practice "building" sentences very intriguing, and the physical movement really keeps them all involved and interested, so the techniques are certainly worth trying. But there is a BIG leap from stating a sentence to writing it down! This makes it look like they just go back after lots of oral practice and start writing. Most Kindergartens have children who don't know their letter sounds yet, much less how to sound out words to write. Some kiddos have never held a pencil much to write any letters. The use of "college" is pretty silly also here.
@Honeybunches19139 жыл бұрын
PaddyRee Not really, I saw this video last year. Although there were questions about transitioning to writing, I went back and implemented the parts I saw into my daily instruction. I was amazed at how my students were able to move to "College" talk. Every time, I asked a questions, they answered in a complete sentence. I then taught my students how to answer questions in complete sentences using "Graduate" Talk. This was my way of teaching them to answer questions using the words from the question. I am going to go back to the website to read all of the information because I want to implement everything including the gestures.

Okay so i am working on becoming a teacher and i scored 200 on both the reading and math praxis (The highest score) exams but am scoring around 150 on the writing so i am trying to start at the very beginning to fix this problem. That being said i am far from being an expert in the area of writing. However wouldn't it be more proper for you to say "please use college talk" when you want them to use complete sentences? Because by doing this you are modeling the "college talk" more then you were when saying just college talk please, right? For example if you want children to use complete sentences wouldnt it be better to tell them "please talk in a complete sentence" instead of just saying "complete sentence please"?
