Correction: There's a typo in one of the dish names. The spring rolls are labels "nem" but should be "neems".
This week, Cooking in America stops by Maty’s African Cuisine. Priding itself as being Detroit’s only Senegalese restaurant, host Sheldon Simeon’s first experience of the cuisine does not disappoint.

I know that you can't generalize people by their country of origin. But in my life, 100%, the people of Senegal and Mauritania are just so special to me. I've never had the honor of visiting, but I've had the honor of a lot of friendships originating from Senegal-as well as one of my favorite bosses ever. I'm also surrounded by jewelry, pillows, wall art, coffee carafes, paintings, scarves and even handmade and painted gun holsters that were all gifted to me by my Senegalese friends. Such a special and unique culture. I just can't express eloquently how much I love these people.

rohan kamath I feel the exact same way. It just goes to show that with hardwork, determination and a clear vision you can achieve anything. I admire the immigrants that we have in New Zealand because a good percentage of them are working long hours, adjusting to a new country / way of life, learning a new language, missing the people they left behind, in some cases dealing with racial discrimination & at times abuse and trying to help their children settle in to a new way of life. Unfortunately we get people from particular islands that come here for the government assistance and the cycle carries on with their children. I guess it takes all sorts of people to create a community.
