I was taught this method of penmanship in third grade. I was fascinated by the appearance of it in the drill and practice books we were given and I was determined to have perfect Cursive. I'm now 47 years old and I still write everything I put to paper in cursive, I refuse to write in block or print letters.

Drawing often calls for many movements similar. Penmanship is very much an art and the masters of the Golden Age penmanship were very much artists. You can learn more about their history at iampeth.com or zanerian.com

Found you through Best Unintentional ASMR. I really appreciate this content. I notice people's handwriting and when it's pleasant to look at, I let them know. @@DieyenDualPen does our arm mostly move right to left or forward to backward? I think it's left to right or vice versa
@DieyenDualPen4 жыл бұрын
I believe the true movement to focus on is the forward and back movement. It is a little more challenging to control because that movement is done by the larger muscles of the back. Where the side to side movement is easier to control because it involves smaller muscles in the arm. If you can master the push pull drill the side to side movement will come intuitively. Hope that helps.

May I ask you a question about drills? In the book of Mr. Palmer on page 22, what does he mean by this sentence? "Never make duals on the back slant. Avoid this by pulling the stroke toward the center of the body?" Thanks
@DieyenDualPen2 жыл бұрын
He is talking about the slant of the oval and in turn your writing. It should slant forward. Back refers to a letter or oval dril that slants backwards instead of forwards. You pull towards the center of your body because if you were to pull towards your right shoulder your slant would be upright or back slant. Check out the 2 diagrams on page 18. Hard to describe without pictures. I hope that makes sense.

What are the benefits of writing with my fingers vs whole arm movement?
@baka_geddy3 жыл бұрын
Your finger's muscles are very small and will be usually very stressed while writing with your fingers, you can't do large movements naturally without a compromise in legibility, whereas in arm movement it's free as a feather! You could compare this as the handwriting in a chalk board in the class room versus in the notebook. Hope it helps!

How long do you recommend practising the drills before moving on to letters?
@DieyenDualPen4 жыл бұрын
You can start incorporating letters from the get go, but drills should always be a part of your practice in my opinion. Although I do recommend spending some sessions entirely on movement.

Sure! Here in the states I don't think that R has been taught in over 30 years, ha! So people don't recognize it as a cursive R. It is a much quicker letter to write surely! But I enjoy the two phase motion of the other :)

When I write with my arm it makes my handwriting big and sloppy D:
@DieyenDualPen4 жыл бұрын
Most must start big with their forms. After a few weeks of consistent practice if you can start to shrink the size. The other thing is you want to make your forearms muscle is planted on the table. If your arm is completely floating you're doing it incorrectly.
@runnerup154 жыл бұрын
It's been a few weeks. If you have been dating your practice material and storing them in a journal you can look back and will hopefully have noticed an improvement. If you have not been practicing I would urge you to start again using this cataloging method and set a date to look back (maybe 10 days or 2 weeks) to see the improvement. You just have to remember to practice every day and of course to forgive yourself if you forgot one day and just push out that deadline accordingly
