Lady Julie, thank you so much for this! The Jernegan's are my family. They held the original estate here at Somerleyton (and Costessey) for centuries and it is so nice to see it's in such good hands with Lord & Lady Crossley and their family now. Like you, I am American, but my family history is embedded deep within the annals of UK history. I'm doubly (both my mother and father are from aristocratic lines of the UK, Denmark, France & Spain) related and am quite sure your beloved Luke is a long distant cousin as I have Montagu amidst my lines as well. It's quite a wildly woven web isn't it?! I imagine it took quite some getting accquainted when you married in. Perhaps that's why I find you and Luke fascinating. The adjustment must have been really something and you seem to have done so well! I'm happy for you and do thoroughly enjoy your channel here. You should do a show on my Courtenay family line they hold Powderham Castle in Exeter/Devon. Lady Courtenay is American as well and roughly similar in age as you. I think you would both get on well and Powderham is a jewel.

I'm glad to see the Crossley's are holding my family's former seat in good condition. My family were the original Jernegan family of the estate for centuries prior to the Wentworths and Peto and the latest Crossley family. The remaining descendants of the Jernegan & Jerningham family scattered through marriage to other gentry families in the UK or came to far off places such as the US, Australia, New Zealand and the Caribbean. There are still lots of Jernegan descendents amongst the gentry in the UK but more by blood than name, title or land. Most of those now come under the Stafford family name.

As an Australian living in Queensland, I've never known too much about "Winter Gardens". However, I thought that what is left of the winter garden at Somerleyton Hall was beautiful. When we saw the original drawings, I was amazed just how magnificent the garden had been. Thank you for a wonderful tour and I'm so glad the plates are restored to be appreciated; they look beautiful too.

@@AmericanViscountess a slightly different collection would be so interesting by doing a series of groups of “marrying in” portraits would be both fascinating and informative, about why, who, where, and when, the portraits images represent. Clusters of groups in specific time sets, different locations/stately homes but portraits who lived at the same time or even where friends of acquaintances at that time. You could use extracts of your existing videos, etc, and pull together a new different angle on the female portraits.

I have always had a burning question, it maybe because I’m an American and just have no idea. When the UK government and military took over these homes. They were well aware of what damage had been done. Did the government pay the owners back for the utter deviation they did? Or did they just say oh well and then charge exorbitant taxes? No payment for damages and no tax breaks for the owners.

/subscribed Thank you so much for sharing--this was fascinating! Can I make a suggestion? When I tour old homes (which isn't very often, TBH), one of my absolute favorite things is learning how the "other half" of these great houses lived (ex. maids, butler, housekeeper, valets, gardeners, etc.). I would love it if you would feature some of their history, living spaces (rooms/lounges), and working spaces (kitchen, pantry, etc.) as well. The contrast is typically very stark, but super interesting none the less. Cheers!

@@CatherineBeaumont-l7xI like the yellow as well. It brightens the room and probably helps their mood during dreary English weather days. Some of these great homes have such dark rooms that I would find it depressing.

It's a home. Homes should be lived in, and whatever helps it be more liveable I support. There are homes given over to the National Trust as museums anyway if one needs to see a fully preserved specimen. Also, goodness, the yellow still looks period: very Regency!

Lord and lady is how you would address a Marquess and Marchioness, an Earl and Countess, a viscount and viscountess, and a baron and baroness. I put them in order of descending rank. The highest rank of aristocracy is a Duke. A duke and Duchess would be addressed as “your grace”.

I found your channel several months ago and have binged back episodes, loving each one. Though I would absolutely love not hearing music while people are talking. Please consider removing music behind people’s voices

I think it’s beautiful,…..we are all allowed different opinions and taste. It’s a shame you felt compelled to express your taste out loud, offending not only the original builders, owners , interior decorators, but also us viewers who I’m sure out weigh your loud thoughts. Others who may agree with you, are mannered enough to keep their thoughts silent and I thank them for their restraint 😊
