I think I know why! From what I understand, though they cut this part from the broadcast for time, but they actually listen to the song a few times before they give it a go, so they can get a feel for the melody or come up with lyrics. I think Brad thought it was another listen-through and didn't realize that was going to be the actual take, which is why he asked "we're really doing this?"
