I would change the dowel location. Use twice as many dowels, and holes. Same horizontal plane, just on the thicker outside edge.

I think the weakness of the thin bit is due to the grain orientation, with a larger piece like that it shouldn't really be an issue unless there is already a split in the wood or someone intentionally tries to break it there

What about trying to make these with the grain orientation rotated 90 deg? That way the horizontal sections have long grain to support shear and bending force from weight and the sides with short grain are mostly under compression force.

I just downloaded the plains, I’m going to make this for my son and his wife. They are wine 🍷 lovers. I don’t think I will use the dowels, I’m thinking of cutting matching curves in place of the dowels and glueing all them together. I’m also thinking I might add some Laser art, and maybe wording. Instead of printing extra copies, you can use dowel points in the holes to find where they would match up on the adjacent piece.

Why not put your holes for your dowels in a thicker area to prevent cracking? Only need to be 1/2" long to align with.

Als erstes, eine tolle Idee. Das Ergebnis ist richtig gut. Allerdings verwirren mich die Maßangaben immer wieder. Ich bevorzuge (weil ich kein anderes nutze) das metrische System. Either glue the plan down on the wood or... if you want to use the template again, use a pencil, darken the backside on the lines, tape down to the wood and then trace the template with a pencil. Basically transferring the template onto the wood. Have my students do this all the time.

I wouldn't worry about dowels, plenty of offcuts, create rounded blocks and glue on chunkier areas of blocks. Or Wouldn't hurt to reinforce the thin segments with 2x 3mm strips inlaid cross grain

Awesome Video as usual! I’m a big proponent of templates. Seems as if all three are the same design. One template made would make life easier. Not only that, you could flip your template to mark the holes on the other side. Storage of the template would be easy.

Its the stock blade that came on her, its like 1/16" kerf and 3/16 band. Happy building!

Do you need dowels? If just for alignment maybe use 1/8” dowels and some glue (CA?) on the faces.

I used thinner dowels on the one I clear coated at the end, worked a lot better. I might adjust the plans so there is a little more space inbetween the bottles as well :)

Did you right click and "save" the photo on the website, if so, click on the image first so it appears as full size. Otherwise the PDF downloads should open as an 8-1/2x11

I also thought about the drill through on the center, but realized you'd either have a sliding section or have to secure it somehow, which might weaken the board and/or dowel.

Drilling a hole all the way through would weaken the joint even more. I did mirror the plans so the back of the center board is included :)

I built a small table for my jig saw, mounted jig saw underneath with blade sticking up and use that as a poormans band saw, plus I only have a 1.5 car garage, yeah they call it a 2 car garage, but that was a lie.

I see where one might think they are power tools, because hand tools are operated solely by human muscle power, while power tools use an external power source. Howeverrrr, I use a power inverter to charge my batteries while riding my bicycle. Which makes them a hand tool hybrid. Nowww the bandsaw, that little gem might cross the line into power tool ;)

Hey, boo, you could rotate your templates 180 degrees and the "hook" of one cut would fit into the opposing "hook" of the previous cut. That way you'd be reducing waste. It might not give you enough room to get an entire extra cut out of it but at least it would give you some extra 2"x6" scrap for other projects.🪵
