Once upon a time reloading saved a lot of money. I started around 1967. Primers were $6.70 a thousand and almost any type of powder was under $10.00 a pound. Recently I found two boxes of Speer 200 grain 45ACP bullets that I had purchased in the late 70"s and forgot about them. They were less than $10.00. I also found a box of 50 factory primed Winchester 380 brass. It was marked $2.37. Today's purchase was one box of Hornady 357 158 grain XTP bullets. They were $29.99. Loading these today runs about .45 cents a shot with once fired brass. Guys my age like to talk about the "Good ole Days". They are gone forever!

Other than a little scope adjustment, we were able to keep five rounds in the black at 50 yards without much trouble. My son has taken whitetail deer with it here in Indiana. As I recall, he liked the performance of one of the “Lever Revolution” configurations very well, in spite of the fact he was shooting a bolt gun. I am an Ohio resident. I tried the .44 mag out of a Marlin 1894 due to our straight wall cartridge restrictions. I recommend jacketed soft points over a hollow point. Federal Hammer Down is decent when you can find it. However, I am not real fond of hunting with the setup. The trajectory of the .44 mag limits you to about 125 yards max. The .44 mag is a short range woods cartridge at best. There is no need to handicap yourself with a revolver cartridge when you have access to far better performing cartridges.

My experience. Blunt bullets are way better if you're shooting under 200yds. My family hunted together for over 20yrs, and we had 18 tags to fill in under 3 days. I've been around 100s of deer taken down. Some would bring in big magnums down to 7mm 08 and 243. The deer that almost always stopped when they were hit were almost always with a round nose or blunt type bullet. 308- 180gr corelokt soft point, not the psp. 270 159gr, same bullet, 3030 same thing. I received a 264 win mag from 1958 from my pap when he died. I have 140gr rem. That thing seemed to go so fast through the deer that it didn't open until it was half way through under 40yds. If it shot over 250 it worked better but my 308 with the blunt nose, they never run. I shot one with the pointed 180gr and he ran 50yds. I got married and found my father in law had realized the same thing. I'm in western pa and hardly ever shoot far. It didn't matter the cal, just the blunt nose. Just somthing for you to think about. 35yrs in the woods.

Adam: If you don't already know... I strongly recommend that you get the most recent Hodgdon Annual reloading manual and check out their data on the various straight wall cases. Find the highest muzzle energy powders and then compare the pressures that they develop to find the optimum propellants and use the lower pressure options, checking out their accuracy after to see how they compare. Hope this helps. You will often be surprised by the efficiency differences of the top performing powders with regards to the considerably lower pressures that some of them can provide and still achieve the highest muzzle energies! Thanks for being there and keep your powder dry!
@superpoint432 ай бұрын
Wish I knew WTF you are trying to say.
@cheryltysver48192 ай бұрын
@@superpoint43 I wish that you understood. If there is some part of the text that I could clarify, I will be happy to try and help. Are you familiar with the Hodgdon Annual manuals? If you look at the load data sections for the caliber that you want to reload... you will find data corresponding to most of the bullet weight options (including the specific bullet used in the data). They will list a number of the most efficient powders for that bullet, along with starting loads and maximum loads. Next they give the velocities achieved with that load and lastly, they show what the corresponding pressures are with that particular load. You can compare the various powders to find the ones that give the highest velocities and energies! The main point of the text is that often two or more powders will be quite close in terms of maximum energies... but NOT in terms of the pressures that they develop! By choosing the lower pressure options, it gives you a greater margin of safety and entails less wear and tear on both gun and shooter! It could also be important in finding loads that could perform reasonably well in older or weaker guns (like lever actions and revolvers) that are not designed for the higher pressures. Hope that this is helpful! Take care...

I started shooting.44 Mag as a teenager back in the late seventies and even then it was expensive enough to make a broke farm kid buy a Lee Hand Press and start loading my own. The other thing is that with the 77/44, (which I own and love!) the magazine restricts you to the standard over-all length of generic ammo so you can't run heavy-bullet specialty loads without single-loading them into the chamber, unlike some revolvers with longer cylinders like the Redhawk and Super Redhawk or certain lever guns. Alot of people like to suppress the 77/44 and run subsonic loads through it, so unexpected fun can be had with milder loads. Enjoy your new bolt gun! Love your videos, so keep them coming ( if you can afford to!).

don't blame the ammo companies. they need to stay in business. this is what happens when the current government destroys the economy ... it is called "inflation" but it is the devaluation of the dollar due to spending money we don't have. voting has consequences. MAGA

So tell me where you think the money comes from and how you think the economy works. Do you know anything about the federal reserve bank? What is the dollar backed by? It used to be gold, but what is it now? Who controls our money and why has it not been our money since the 70s? Does the president control the federal reserve? Is the president even allowed inside the federal reserve? Why is our money controlled by a private bank that no citizen or member of government has access to?

One other factory load I used in the .44 Magnum were the 330 grain hard cast lead Hammerheads from Garrett Ammunition. Those could only be used in a Ruger Super Redhawk revolver because of the OAL. They penetrated deep and killed like lightening, even on thin skinned game.
@shawnfinley58272 ай бұрын
I have found the federal 240 grainers are very hot for factory loads if you can find them, I have found Winchester 240’s to be accurate.🙂👍

That is why in 1967, when I got my first Ruger Super Blackhawk 3screw, I started reloading for the 44, because even then, 44 mag loaded ammo prices were ridiculous. A pound of 2400 powder, which is what Elmer Keith always used for 44, was $1.89/lb. H4831 which I used for my 25-06 that I got in 1969 was $1.45/lb. I find today’s prices abhorrent, especially for the primers. Concerning the loads for the 44, I can attest that a Hornady XTP will reliably expand and drop a deer in either a pistol or rifle. In a 454 Casull with an XTP mag bullet, it is also lights out. If you decide to start loading look no further than a load of 21gr /2400/240 XTP or 23.5gr 296/240XTP or if you wanna smack a big hog 21 gr /296/310 gr.WFN hard cast GC, which is an absolute hammer. After 56 years of loading and shooting the 44, those are my recommendations. When I was at a gun shop in the early 70’s, and S&W model 29’s were virtually unobtainable, they had just delivered a case of model 29’s in all configurations, I purchased a 6 1/2” nickel for $399, which I thought was ridiculous, but through the years has shown what a great investment, sent it off and had it Magnaported, and made it such a pussycat to shoot. Good luck Who-T, I hope you develop such a love affair with the 44 as I have.

44 Mag has gotten to be a reloaders cartidge. Its so insane to buy loaded rounds today, but much less expensive to load your own. Especially if you cast your own. Starline brass is fairly cheap just add the ingredients and its much less costly than store bought these days. Once you have a pile of good brass just recycle.

I actually use the Ammo Inc. 240 grain hollow points in my .44 mag lever gun and they do a great job. Shoot great and puts the deer down. The gun shop I got them from told me that they actually use Hornady lead in that Ammo. So I bought them. All I had shot before was Hornady and couldn’t find them. That was right after Covid when ammo was hard to get. I haven’t looked back. Great stuff.

That's like last year 35 Remington ammo was ridiculous if you could find it, sometimes 90 bucks a box. This year it came back but Remington wants 60 bucks a box which is a ripoff so I found some Federal Hammer Down for 33 bucks a box and the stuff is awesome accurate and my gun loves it so I bought 5 boxes lol

I think the chamber pressure on the 45-70 is capped much lower from the black powder days so maybe the leverlution was meant for a higher velocity. Typically Hornady had put impact velocity design intentions in with the projectiles so you had and idea if it was suitable for the application. A chronograph test of the 44 mag with the 225 and the 45-70 with the deer catcher round would be kind of interesting especially when compared in a gel block.
