This is my recent deer gun (since Ohio allowed straight walled cartridges). I have a Marlin 1895 in 45/70 but this saved me about 4lbs of walking around weight. I do have a suppressor but the threaded version cost over $100 more when I would add 1lb just for a suppressor.

This rifle dosent need a suppressor anyway. It dosent kick and using one makes this handy little rifle ridiculous!

I really appreciate all of the 44Mag content lately Who Tee.. being that 44Mag has ALWAYS been one of my favorite calibers! My dream rifle would be to find a Ruger Carbine or the Deerfield carbine 99/44 with rotary magazine.. and I really wish Ruger would bring these models back into production. I love 44mag lever guns and revolvers.. but I also need one of them Magnum Research Desert Eagle's in 44mag (with the spare barrel in 50AE) and I will own one.. one day. I have never really considered the Ruger 77/44 bolt action but I would definitely add one to my collection (if I ever came across a deal on one that I just could not refuse) but I am not really a fan of the polymer stock and would much rather prefer a nice hardwood. Great video Who Tee Who!!

The operation of the magazine will get easier as it breaks in, and it's a little quirky too. Once it's broken in and you've figured out the quirks it is effortless. It's like anything else, once you've learned it you'll love it. To release the magazine, hold the rifle so the the mag is down and push the button in sharply and all the way in. The mag will then drop out on an angle and stop. Then push the mag from the front towards the rear of the rifle and it will fall free. I can get mine out in 2 seconds or less, and it's almost as easy putting it back in. You will be able to put it back in without pushing the mag release button. You will love it. I've had my 77/357 for about 2 weeks and was a little concerned by it for a while, but It's now become effortless.

Hey Hootie, I have the exact same rifle in .357 (77/357). The magazine is a little difficult until you learn the secret (at least for mine). Hold the rifle horizontal with the ground instead if vertical. Don't use your fingers to try and pry the magazine out. With the rifle horizontal and the magazine facing the ground, press the release button and let gravity drop the rear of the magazine down. The front will still be attached. With the release button still pressed, very lightly lift the rear end of the magazine that dropped back up just slightly and the front end will then drop out. At least that works for mine. Give it a try and see if it works for yours. Putting it back in works best with the release button pressed. Insert front of magazine first and then lift the back until it snaps in. Then release the button.

One of the things that will help when you’re seating the mag is to angle it upwards a bit, so that the little protrusion at the front of the magazine engages with the corresponding element in the mag well. The front engages first, then the back snaps into place.

Shot 2 deer about 3 minutes apart underneath me in a tree stand with a Marlin 1894 .44 magnum carbine. way back in 2007. Both were about 25 feet off the muzzle. The doe went down right there and the buck sprinted 30 yards and crashed. The ammo was Remington Core Lokt 240 soft point which is fairly weak for the caliber but still did a fine job. Conventional wisdom suggests using a soft point out of a rifle instead of a hollow point.
@sleeper.simulant73272 ай бұрын
Remington does the HTP JSP’s that are loaded a bit spicier for a factory load, hold up better then the JHP’s do but still get some deformation, especially when solid matter like bone is hit.

I own one of these and it's my primary deer rifle and its been great over the past ten years. However it isn't the first one I've owned, I actually owned one about 13 years ago and that one was indeed a turd as far as accuracy. After realizing that no matter what I did I couldn't squeeze anything better than a 5-6" group at 50 yards I sold it. But I always missed it and how light and handy it was, so I took a risk and bought another. This one is accurate, 2" groups at 100 yards are completely doable, I've deer hunted with it exclusively for the past decade and will likely be my deer rifle for the rest of my life.

Hey, I was the one that had negative feedback back on 77/44 I owned. You can take hard recoil pad off and put a black slip-on Med, Sims Air Tech Limbsaver on. It fits nice and takes the sting out of the recoil. Also, if your accuracy isn’t good, you can get bolt shims to tighten up the lock up of the bolt. Thanks for the update.
@michaelowen61972 ай бұрын
Oh, I think you understand what I was talking about with inserting the magazine. Next up is a pinched thumb when you put on the scope from bolt knob. Hopefully you will find some accurate loads, because 240hp hammer deer.
@RyeOnHam2 ай бұрын
So, the magazine has a projection at the front that goes into a fixed hole in the receiver. To insert the magazine, you must push it back while you push it up. That depresses the mag release. To remove, grab the mag with your finger at the front and pull backwards, toward the butt of the gun, while at the same time depressing the mag release with your thumb. You can also get an extended magazine release.

I have not owned one of these, but up here in the NH woods the 44 carbine was/is very popular with woods hunters. The same gun only in semi-auto without a removable mag. Basically a 10/22 in 44 magnum. It worked the same way with the button, only you just pushed the button in and then shoved a cartridge in. I think it took 4 in the tube, not sure now with my old memory. I bought a used one for my wife when she decided to hunt, and she put down a nice buck with it. A fair bit bigger than the doe I got that year, which she never let me forget. haha. I won a few local club trophy shoots with it also. It pointed and shot so easily.

@diggernash12 ай бұрын
@deerhuntersteve9559 My reply would not post. Yes. The Ruger 44 carbine was originally engraved and marketed as the Deerstalker. They were sued for copyright infringement and dropped the Deerstalker moniker. If you can find a 1961 model, it should be marked Deerstalker. I killed my first deer with one at age 9...so I may be heavily biased to the original. That was over 4 decades ago. That rifle still functions flawlessly and will be coming home to me in a few years, but that will be a bittersweet inheritance as it means my dad will be acknowledging his inability to hunt any longer or will have passed away. Hopefully, it will have many generations of first deer ahead of it.

In the past, when I hit feeding snags, I would eject the round before firing and give it an inspection. I've found that some rounds of my .303 British were catching the chamber rim and distorting the lead nose of the bullet. As you know this can affect the accuracy at distance so you should check this on those .44 magnum hollow points.

WTW. I have a Henry 44mag lever action. I added a 2-7x32 Vortex scope. With a 240gr FP, do not be surprised when you notice exit wounds. As a cartridge, deer, hogs, whatever, as long as you are in range of the game, it is going down. I have gotten outstanding accuracy with a full charge of W296 powder (ref. the Hornady 9th edition load manual). It is a thumper. I look forward to the scoped results. The 44mag and 30-30 are about all I am sing these days. The brush restricts distances so either one will get it done all day.

Slather some white lithium or paint pen on the edges of the mag and insert it. Then take it out and see where its making contact. File those areas a little at a time till it falls out unimpeded. Its a plastic mag and looks to be of similiar construction to a 10/22 so the mag locking mechanism is in the center/metal contact

You'll get used to the magazine it's finicky but you definitely don't have to worry about dropping it in the woods. Also the rings that come with it are a little on the low side, my 2-7x32 barely clears without scope caps and binds if I have flip up caps on.

.44 in a carbine/rifle is the same energy at 100 yards as .44 from a 6 inch barrel gets at the muzzle

Sweet rifle you mentioned ammo cost the other day reloading should reduce the cost a lot Berry's bullets makes a lot of different bullets at good prices

The magazine will become easier with a little break in and acquiring the knack !

Who-Tee, like mark before me already said hold the rifle horizontal. I have the same rifle in 22 Hornet. When she's horizontal the magazine drops right out.

You can wind the magazine spring to be tighter. Same as a 10/22.

Almost bought one when I was in college. Didn't "pull the trigger" then because I wasn't "into" the 44 mag. The 77/44 is one of the firearms that I keep wondering about. Should I have purchased it??? Same for the semiautomatic 44. For some reason, i keep thinking that it would have been nice to have tried them out.

I have the same rifle but I'm in a no suppressor state. I would love to see you run some 44 special through it. Thanks.

I’ve never had problems dropping mags out of my Ruger M77. As long as the rifle is horizontal, the mags drop out as soon as I press the mag release button. Never have the rifle pointing vertically when trying to remove the mag.

Wish they would bring back their semi-auto 44mag carbine.

Yeah I was just on my way wading through the comments to post this very thing The very few Deerfields ( and everything else) are priced way out of reach for the average joe Love to have one myself

Ruger also made a lever action in 44 mag. I'm looking if anyone is selling. I'll check back here tomorrow if anyone is interested.
