I'm a .308 person (Browning BLR). Used to have a sporterized 1903 Springfield. When I had the chance at a good buy on the BLR a grabbed it for a lighter weight package that had close to .30-06 ballistics. In MI deer country, shots are rarely more than 75 yards so I figured it was a good option.

Totally get it. My father was a big western fan. He named me after a western star. And he had a 30-30 that I used to go hunting with him with. There is not a time I don't see a 30-30 that I don't think of him. I admit though that the 30-06 is a better all round hunting weapon, 1000 yards vs 200 yards effective range, can put down a griz more easily, or a big moose, but still love the 30-30 just because it reminds me of him. Ain't that the way it happens...
@pubert34 жыл бұрын
@@alexmh6131 correct. this is the only reason why I purchased a .308 as my deer rifle of choice. In terms of price to performance the .308 is more economical. the .30-06 is definitely, in terms of ballistics, the superior round however. Flatter Trajectory and slightly better range for a price I find to be too unjustifiable for my personal economic incentives at this time. I am also a mediocre shot at ranges beyond 150 yards where I am incompetent in calculating bullet drop and wind and other environmental factors. I simply can't find the time to practice and the .308 is less expensive for practice.

I'm sold on 30-06. About 25 years ago I was shopping for a rifle that I could use for just about any game that I might draw for in AZ. A Browning semi-auto in 30-06 checked all the boxes. Usable for any game I was likely to draw for. Ammo reasonable cost and available everywhere. Excellent ballistics. A very reliable semi-auto. Never regretted the choice.

I had a neighbor take me shooting one day and he demonstrated the difference between different rounds. We used some watermelons as targets. We had 30.06, 223, 9mm, 380, 44mag, and 45acp. Here is what happened. 223... Hit the watermelon made little hole in and slightly bigger out. This round in commonly found in what the media calls an assault rifle, we shot it out of an AR15. 9mm... little hole in and quite a bit bigger going out. Common round in semi-auto handguns. We used a Baretta (cant remember the model but similar to the military issue) 380... little hole in little hole out. This round is not as common any more, it's slightly larger in diameter than a 9mm but not as powerful. We had a small revolver for this one (cant remember the model) 44mag. This was fun... the watermelon had a big hole in and was missing most of the back. I didn't like shooting this one as the revolver we used kicked like a mule. It was a Ruger blackhawk. 45acp. My favorite of the handgun rounds we used. Similar effect as the 44mag but the Colt 1911 was smooth and easy to shoot. This round is not as popular as it used to be but still a great round all and all. And last was the 30.06 I saved the comments about this one to be last as the media doesn't have as much problem with single shot type hunting rifles as they do with the big scary sounding "semi-auto" sporting rifles. We used a Remington 700 for the shooting and I fell in love with this rifle (I now own one even). I cant tell you what size the entrance hole was because the watermelon pretty much exploded on impact. When I say exploded I dont mean like it left a crater in the ground but we were about 20 yards away for all shots and the 30.06 we saved for last and we ended up getting watermelon guts all over the range and even back on us. Not just one melon either, we hit 3 melons with each round (there were 3 of us shooting that day) and all 3 times with the 30.06 we got sprayed!

That's actually the same reason I prefer 30-06. You can load it all the way up to a 220 grain bullet which turns it into a legit large/dangerous game rifle and pushes it beyond what pretty much any other non magnum cartridge can do. Most people would never have a need for that though and when it comes to whitetail or pig there's not much difference other than effective range.

As I recall from my deer hunting days after I got back from service in '68, I looked up the ballistics of my .308 caliber Remington model 788 and compared the ballistics to the 30-06 round. At 500 yards, the bullet drop for the .308 was about 8" lower than the 30-06. Not much difference between the fps or foot pounds either as I recall. Personally I've owned .308 rifle and 30-30 but have fired all 3 calibers. For hunting deer I don't think it would make much difference which caliber was used within 100 yards; the deer would still be dead with a well placed shot.

The test kind of confirms or at least intimates a lot of what we instinctively knew. The .30-30 is not the most powerful 30 cal but is exceptionally well balanced, efficient, and handy for most medium-large game and antipersonnel use. The 06 is a good deal more powerful in the sense of energy it can transfer but of course is not nearly as efficient or as well adapted to the handy lever carbines. The 308 is a compromise which gives you most of the performance of the 06 (at the expense of higher pressure) in short action autoloaders as long as you stick to moderate bullet weights. Work up some loads with 220+ gr hard cast or solids and the 06 would likely step ahead handily. In a bolt action the 06 family has always made the most sense to me. For a midsize autoloader or box magazine lever gun the 308 and it's progenitor the 300 Savage do seem pretty logical.

I appreciate your comment, I think with the polymer tip .30-30 that Hornady is offering there's new life for this great old round. I live in Indiana so the 30-06 that I hunt with is a bit much at 100 yards or less but it works. I don't have much experience with a .308 but assume that unless you're using a heavier bullet like 180gr+ you're getting much the same performance (with less recoil). When I first bought my own rifle I thought I'd get one all around rifle that could do almost anything and now I've got a 94' .30-30 that's 100 yards accurate, and a .30-06 that's shoots better than I do.

A 30-30 is a good saddle gun since it is shorter than the other 2. I had a Winchester 30-30 and it has killed a few deer, but my meat stick was my Savage 270 bolt action. It was deadly accurate. Ballistic tips make it even more deadly.
@tombeyer3752 жыл бұрын
Yeah, those Ballistic Tips are something else! Majority of the time, when you shoot a deer, the bullet goes clean through. Years ago shot a deer with my 7mm Remington Magnum with a 150gr Nosler Ballistic tip. Deer was at 225 yards, standing broadside on a steep upward hill, that swept the front legs back some, facing to the right. Upon skinning the deer, found the bullet just inside the skin of the left leg. Bullet had broken right leg, went through ribs and boiler room and broken left fron leg. Used ALL the energy on that deer! Bullet is now a conversation piece!

.308 & 30-06 have identical velocity with the 150 gr. These velocities with these light bullets give poor penetration on very dense material. But, the 30-06 gives a lot more velocity with the heavier 180 & 200 gr. bullets..thus a lot more energy and penetration than the .308 is capable of. I really prefer the 200 gr. spitzer in my 30-06 [1/2 moa at 100 yrds.]
@notsosilentmajority15 жыл бұрын
@@daviddana339 Hey brother, there is always going to be a friendly rivalry between people based on their preference of ammo, guns and just about everything else, especially in the firearm community. I think it's based on personal experiences, triumphs and losses. As far as MOA, you cannot discount the importance of the weapon you are using. You can have the absolute best ammo in the world and if the firearm is a piece of junk you won't have an MOA worth a damn. I have a SAKO A7 in .308 and SAKO guaranteed a 5 shot sub 1 MOA at 100 yds. straight out of the box. Guess what? They were right. I had a sub 1 MOA at 100 yds. in a 5 shot group right out of the box using Hornady ammo. That rifle is incredibly accurate and I get 1 MOA or sub MOA with cheaper rounds as well. I became a .308 guy due to military experience many, many years ago. I also like the fact that .308 ammo is everywhere and in bulk thanks to the military using it. Just about all of my rifles are .308/7.62x51 or 223/5.56 because those are military calibers and getting ammo at a fair price is a lot easier and there should never be a shortage of those rounds either. Of course if there ever is really a zombie apocalypse I want to have millions of rounds available to me....lol. The 30-06 is a fantastic round and at the end of the day all that matters is that we are all happy with the ammo we are using. Best wishes and happy shooting brother.

@Jeff Holland ballistic coefficients and kinetic energy are a thing. He should have thrown a 220 GR smk into a block. You should see what an m2ap does out of a 24" 1903. I can completely disable vehicles with one shot.
@ritotron57525 жыл бұрын
@ that is wholly incorrect. Their ballistics charts are different and 30-06 can fire a 55gr sabot all the way up to 230gr supersonic. Sub Sonic loads are also different pressures and optimal barrel lengths are different with 22" preffered for .308 and slower burning powder and 24" for 30-06.
@N0sf3r4tuR1s3n2 жыл бұрын
Two points: First, 30-30 has less recoil than .308 but is still enough bullet to kill a deer or black bear out to 150 yards, it's a great hunting round unless you need more range than that which only applies to like half the country. It functions great in lever action rifles, if that's how you hunt it's a timeless classic. Second, yeah .308 really is almost as powerful as 30-06, just slightly less powerful, maybe- if you can kill it with 30-06 you can kill it with .308. I've read that the difference between the two is that 30-06 may go about 100-150 fps faster for the same bullet weight; but does that really make much difference to an elk? The kinetic energy from either is sufficient and the trajectory is adequately flat enough that, with practice, you can kill an elk with either.

Great video!!!. 30-06 is a great round.and as the 30-06 is was talked about in my generation. The 308 is being talked about more in the younger generation. Good example I'm in my 40s and deer hunt with a 303 British Enfield. Most people younger than me have no clue what a 303 British round is. I'd go with the 308 since if I was buying a new one tommorrow. Just becouse more stuff will be coming out for it in the future. Easier to find rounds 30 years from now. 30-30 id take for heavy wooded areas or brushy. If I had to take the furthest shoot with accuracy for me. 30-06 becouse I know the round better.

The 308 was developed to mimic the performance of the 30-06 in a short action cartridge so I expected the results to be similar. Having said that, I think a more accurate comparison would have been using the same bullet in all 3 rifles. In the 30-30 you used a Remington Corelokt and a Winchester Super X in the other 2 so it's hard to say that the Super X would have held together on impact like the Corelokt. Also 150gr bullets are fairly light bullets for those 3 cartridges so next time it might be better to run 180s. Overall a good video though.

About what I expected, especially the .308 v. 30-06. 30-06 probably has a slight edge for versatility, but that’s mainly because the 30-06 with 180 grain bullets can be driven to higher velocity than a .308 with 180 grain bullets. Performance between the 2 is about the same when shooting 150-165 grain billets with the .308 having a slight accuracy advantage that won’t matter to what’s being shot. Love to have a 30-30. There’s a lot to be said for it on deer size game and shots under 150 yards.

Considerations since hunting has been mentioned: What about accuracies at typical hunting ranges of 200-300 Meters with "standard" loads and bolted-actions ? The 30-30 "cowboy" snub-nose would cause it to shine even less than either the 308 or 30-06 at longer ranges. And ofcourse, combine that with the reasons of higher grainage of loads for the 308 and the 30-06 { the 150 (?)grain 30-30 vs 180grain 30-06 ? } "Pointiness" and more explosive power will magnify advantages at typical hunting ranges. And it is a game of advantages

Looks like 308 and 30-06 tied. 308 transferred part of its kinetic energy to shattering one of the two halves in half again, BUT the 30-06 threw at least one of the halves farther and harder (KE = 0.5 * mass * (velocity)^2), so it appears to me that both had roughly the same kinetic energy, which makes sense since I hand load to certain velocities both and the velocity range of the .308 and 30-06 are nearly identical under standard load. So 308 and 30-06 tied, but blew away the 30-30 obviously. (PS, I am a physicist/engineer by trade).
@TheHyde88755 жыл бұрын
The 30-06 will always have more energy than a 308 and is every bit as accurate if not more so. There is no need for 308 unless you're using an AR style platform and even then you can get 30-06 in an AR these days. So my question is, why own a 308?

Rob easy, 308 utilizes a short action so you can save weight and length of gun for hunting. 308 is 100fps slower and about 100ftlbs less at muzzle and run neck and neck to 300 yards no one unless a hand loader can tell the difference in performance. If your gonna walk alot and weight is a issue 308 is a better choice. If weight is not a issue or overall length then 30 06. As a side note 06 does have the advantage of a 200 or 220 grain load a 308 does not for heavy bears or moose. But 308 with good bullets 180 gr will do just fine. Personal preference is really only difference.

@@kylecasetta4091 dude. The .308 is less than a half inch shorter. There is absolutely zero difference in weight. If you look at the weight of a 700 rem, browning x bolt, winchester 70 etc in both 308 and 30-06 they weigh exactly the same. And a half inch shorter stroke on the bolt isn't going to make much of a difference. It's not worth the loss in velocity much like the 375 ruger vs 375 h&h.

@@TheHyde8875 compare a model 7, or 77 compact. To a full sized m70 or 700 huge difference. My 7 with a 20 inch barrel runs 100fps slower than it's full sized counterparts. No one can tell the difference in performance from 0 to 300 yards. The 7 is way shorter way more compact. Plus way lighter than the 700. All depends on the gun you purchased. Caliber alone pick one you'll never no what's better neither will the deer elk or bear.

@@kylecasetta4091 lol. Dude. You're an idiot. You just contradicted yourself and also talking about comparing different makes/models to each other. I'm talking about comparing like make/models in 308 vs 30-06. There's absolutely zero difference in weight.

Could bullet shape have had an effect? 308 and 30-06 were both pointed while 30/30 was round nosed.

did they shoot that thutty thutty out of a lever gun?had a tube magazine? thats why. they need to use a hollowpoint in them guns. a big one or a flat nosed bullet.

@@dalemaloney255 Oh, I knew why, I'm just pointing out the difference in bullets that may also make a difference in how it goes through (or doesn't go through) the target.

Polymer tipped rounds are pointed and help with ballistics but don't know how it would effect penetration because, ya know, polymer
@mazlo65743 жыл бұрын
The 30 - 30 bullet isn't jacketed. Plain ole lead. The other two bullets are jacketed. That will affect the penetration of the 30-30 because it disintegrates quicker.

Here in the Midwest I have used all three cartridges for hunting cinders. To be fair, I’ve never eaten one, but it looks like the .06 does a nice job of field dressing them for you.

Doesnt matter if you are predator hunting. 30-06 is a slayer for mountain lions and coyotes.

Nah the deer will just walk away with a .30-30 but the .30-06 will drop them dead instantly.

To take a guess before watching, I feel like the penetration will be similar with all 3, but we might see more immediate damage with the 06 and 308. The 30-30 is often underestimated.

30-30 is more accurate . I use it without scope to 6-7 time that distance and is bulls eye every time , hit a mowing target as an oil can without letting it rest with 7 shoots , this is why they not selling Winchesters any more
@robo85236 жыл бұрын
@@elenapopescu100 Actually the 30-30 is the least accurate of the 3. Shoot a 5 shot group out of each at 200 yards and I would be willing to bet the 30-30 is the least accurate. Not that it isn't a great caliber. Out to 150 yards or so they are a decent round. Using the newer hornady leverevolution polymer pointed tip ammo will get you even a little more speed and range but with the old round nose ammo compared to the other 2 I don't think its even close. Especially beyond the 150-200 yard mark.

I live and hunt in the southwestern part of the country. I have had good luck with my .270 and 7mm. magnum for elk and mule deer. I also have a .300 Win magnum. That one I use in Canada and Alaska for bigger game.

270 a good caliber,, it will be the last deer rifle to leave my place ... all i ever hunted deer with until few years ago ..went to 243 .. its a smooth shooting gun for a old man like myself .. north east texas on my farm in the red river bottoms its all a man needs for pigs and deer ... when i was younger id swore the 270 hung the moon for white tail and mule deer hunting ..
