Cutting up the block only adds to the amount of entrapped air. Get the big fragments out, melt the block without cutting into pieces, and any remaining small fragments will sink to the bottom, where they can be removed after unmolding.

I found that baking at 265 degrees makes for a less viscous fluid that lets any particulates settle like you pointed out and bubbles from the terminal ballistics raise right out. I slice into 3 inch cubes that can be fit together in the mold easier without the air bubble issues. Altitude makes a big difference to. I'm at 3500 ft above sea level. The idea is to melt without boiling bubbles forming so I check it 2 hours in and lower the temp in 5 degree increments if it boiling to much. Once it has melted I keep it at the minimum heat needed for bubbles to rise. After a first try where I learned where the difficulties pop up I've had perfect results. I also had a professional welder friend weld me up a polished stainless mold that is 30% deeper than the finished block dimensions. I coat the inner surfaces of with high temp silicone. The blocks come out easily and the surface is as transparent as can be.

One thing with cooking/remelting anything is ALTITUDE, where I am at now water boils at 180F not 212F. tip to keep bubbles out is just cut into slices about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick, put a layer and heat, let it heat for a bit then add another layer, it will take a longer but give better results. all the small chunks create a ton of of air pockets between the chunks

I found that pulling the gel away from the side of the mold and squirting water, or soapy water in there helps a LOT to get it to slip out. Gel is an absolute pain to work with. A viewer recently told me about something called Plastisol - the stuff artificial fishing bait is made from. You can buy 5 gallons of the stuff for 100 to 150 bucks. It starts out white and is watery like milk until you cook it. I think it might be the same stuff Clear Ballistics uses. If this works, I can make blocks for about 1/3 the cost. I've been communicating with a company, picking their brain to see if this stuff might be a good alternative. Maybe we can just pour Plastisol into the mold, cook it and be done. No bubbles, no picking out debris and dirt and all that.

@@brianvosburgh1720 I baked a 6 oz. sample of the plastisol in the oven in a coffee mug to get a feel of this stuff. Well, it off-gassed and smoked like crazy so cooking a whole block of the stuff in the oven is out of the question. Next step it to try an elect. roasting pan and cook it outdoors.

The best bang for your buck at the moment (20% gel anyway) is to buy a Spartan Block and an FBI mold. The Spartan block contains the same volume of gel as two Nato blocks and has the best price per pound value of any of the other blocks. Once it's shot up and needs to be remolded, it'll make two FBI/Nato blocks.

Just melted mine for the first time, had a few problems but got them fixed. Tearing the slices was a HUGE help. I ended up turning the oven up to 270 and covering the mold in aluminum foil. ALL the bubbles came out and only had a few ON the surface. None in the block itself. I did not use a mold release agent as recommended. Its cooling now, hoping it comes out of the mold ok tomorrow. Merry Christmas!

I've found that if you line the mold (pan) with 1/2" "slices" keep adding them as each layer melts, and use a slightly higher temperature (about 260-265F) you'll almost certainly get better results. Your results were, however, not bad at all for a first attempt. Well done !!

do you need mold release agent? Just melted the first time, no release agent, its cooling we shall see. Also I tried 250 and after 4 hours there were major air bubbles. I put a dowel rod in and the top was melted but the bottom was not. I turned it up to 260 for another 2 hours, about the same. turned it up to 270 for 2 more hours and put aluminum foil over the mold to try and help it melt better in the mold and even the temp out. WOW, great clear melt! a few small bubbles ALL on the surface, none in the block itself!

You might try tapping on the metal pan intermittently while it is still in the oven to get those air bubbles to rise to the top next time. I would try to find a used range ( Craigslist etc) I could hook up outside on in the garage to do that in ( If you are going to be doing it frequently ) No telling what kind of gasses that stuff is letting off in your home. That Charlie is a cutie :-) I think she has a future career in TV :-) . Merry Christmas and have a Blessed 2019

Great job but you blow dry when its still in liquid form and you should have another container for melting the jel and pour it in the mold slowly, portion by portion so that in between you can blow dry the bubbles away. Hope this helps.

@WHOTEEWHO
@WHOTEEWHO 5 жыл бұрын
That is a really tough one. If I had to absolutely pick I'd probably go with 4570. But it is a very close call. Really depends on what you need it for. For purely big game hunting I might go 450 bushmaster
@john-paulsilke893
@john-paulsilke893 5 жыл бұрын
.45/70 is easily available for plinking but if you reload either is good. Like Adam said the Bushmaster is great most off the shelf ammunition is proper good stuff while the .45/70 stuff is often nerf’d for weaker actions and is barely above .44 magnum power and often below.

Wonder if you could have sliced it up like bread and simply turned the pieces sideways in the mold? That way it would all fit? I don't know, maybe would effect the melting and clarity?

You need to leave it in the container at temp for longer to allow the bubble to float to the top. Set it to ~250F and leave it at 250F for an hour or so after it completely melts.

I would try lining the mold for easier release and not taking the bullet fragments out. Then melt the whole block in the mold. I would think they should sink to the bottom when the block melts so you can remove them from the surface upon removal from the mold. I wonder if the bullets would discolor the gel though.

Just like processing large game. Break it up into sections to remove the big chunks of debris, and I’ve found that an industrial kitchen strainer is invaluable if you really wanna keep your block clear. I’ve been blasting on the same 2 blocks for a long long time, they eventually do get cloudy lookin. Those bubbles can be popped as it’s in the oven if you’re ocd like me lol. I use an ice pick to pop the large ones on top and it works well. Good luck Sir, great video.

Not gonna read all the comments, but instead of a fillet knife, pick up an electric knife from a garage sale or Salvation Army store for a few bucks. Like the kind you cut a slab of meat with. I use one to cut different things from foam to silicone for making casting molds and it works like a charm. I'd say to use the heat gun to get rid of the bubbles right after it comes out of the oven, too, not after it cools. You may have figured all this out already though since this video is a few years old now.

Not sure how, but I know that putting the item to be cast in a vacuum chamber helps get the air bubbles out. As for the debris, once it's heated to a high enough temperature to be a liquid at least some of the debris should float to the surface or sink to the bottom. If you cast the block in a vertical position, that might just require cutting or melting the upper and lower surfaces. I'd also think having a casting mold with slightly tapered walls and using a release agent. How's that for overcomplicating the hell out of it.

Vacuum chamber! I know, I know, more money.... But that would solve the air issue and honestly you can make one fairly cheap. But only warranted if you will be doing this often. I also think the large block will melt just fine and you'd end up with less air. But you may not be able to remove all the fragments, etc. But they would probably sink to the bottom anyway.
