I hate dealing with ballistic gel and I imagine this is the general consensus of anyone who has used it and recast it. Because SO many people are really bothered each time the gel block lands in the dirt and suggest putting a tarp down, I felt it was easier to address that than reply to hundreds of commenters who thought they were the first people to ever suggest using a tarp. Next, I also offer a helpful tip for removing the gel from a mold. Finally I discuss the use of Plastisol as a ballistic medium.
Now, are we idiots? The jury is still out on that one.

It's a heck of a cost savings if you can work out the issues. Rigid 'clear' PVC (available in sheets or as pipe) has a bluish-violet tinge to it. I'd bet the yellowish color of your sample is from the massive amounts of plasticizer required to turn it into a gel. Di-octal Phalate is the most common plasticizer, but it's a clear oily fluid in it's natural state (and stinks to high heaven). I'm thinking it's what's reacting to the heat, not the PVC base. I would expect you'll see it the material darken and become stiffer as you recycle it. You also may also have problems getting the pieces to fuse and become homogenous after a heat cycle or 2. Hope the info helps a bit, I'll be watching your progress, maybe Someday we'll have "Tao Gel" and you will revolutionize the market....
@taofledermaus
@taofledermaus 2 жыл бұрын
I think you are correct. If you pour a little of this on cardboard the oily base will soak into the cardboard and leave a little puddle of the PVC on the surface. And yes, recasting this will be interesting. I might have to turn it into new gummy bears, which would actually look nice yellow.

@@taofledermaus i was just now thinking that perhaps a small hole at the bottom of the casting mold, with a little silicone plug may be helpful in removing the solidified block. pop out the plug and that should allow air to get under it while lifting out. this would (hypothetically) make it easier to remove from the mold. you could try this out with an old loaf pan first to see if it would actually work, or if i am thinking about this in a weird way and instead, it would not work.

I don't see the yellow as a problem, as long as it can be clarified. The real question is how many times can it be melted down and reused? Will it get cloudier? Is there a way to chemically clarify it that is economical and safe for home use? The small scale test looks promising, though I'm looking forward to full scale testing of its viability as a ballistic medium.

That's really interesting, and very cool of them to work with you. I'm sure the possibility of a whole new market opening up for their product helps as well, and hopefully they can get into it. That's a heck of a price break over the traditional stuff. I know some people will complain, but I personally couldn't care less if it's off-color. It's a bit of a bummer when the gel starts going opaque, but it's not like I'm going to complain. I realize you're paying for the stuff out of pocket and 140 bucks isn't exactly chump change. Well, except maybe at the gas pump, but that's a whole other topic. Hopefully it works out for you. It'll be even better if its able to hold off from going opaque like the gel, or at least hold off longer.

Nice one Jeff , as the saying go's "Nothing ventured nothing gained " . Fingers crossed & with a bit of luck shooters might see a different commercially available medium to test ballistic effects on , and with two producers of similar products there is a good chance prices might start to drop , all thanks to TFM viewers for suggesting it & TFM for being adventurous enough to test it as a ballistic testing material . As for it being a yellow tinge that's not really a problem ,it's still plenty transparent enough to be able to see wound channels & expansion & segmentation as it occurs , so You'll not have any complaints from Me or I suspect 99%+ of Your viewers . This is simply a different medium being tested , I love the fact that You used an air rifle for that first test shots and comparison , it would be interesting too know hat velocity that air pellet was travelling at & the weight I could see You doing a short group of episodes retesting several more common projectiles , like Foster Slugs or 00 buck shot , and perhaps some of the other Not So Unobtainable exotica round such as the wired lead balls , Yes it repetition of already proven results but in a different Medium , so there valid tests in its own right . @@taofledermaus Maybe you could buy or make a silicon mold. That might allow you to cast the plastisol in a microwave with no problems. And since all you're casting is a block, it should be easy enough to make the mold by either dumping silicon over a gel or plastisol block or a block of wood of the same size, I know that hobbyists that make prop replicas will often make a form for pouring a mold by using Lego to form a box around what they're trying to pull a mold off of.

Man those guys at "bait plastics" will love you's for this, I'm not surprised they are trying to devise a special product designed for shooters, imagine the potential for business! It's cheaper than ballistic gel and the colour isn't perfect but who cares about the colour as long as the clarity is good enough to see the wound channel through it, and I know that smell of cutting pvc with a mitre saw I have done it many times as a chippy in my life and it's not a good smell but that can be overcome as Jeff did by doing it outdoors where the fumed can escape harmlessly, it seems like win win to me really.

Great Video Jeff. Thanks for putting in all that hard work and time to try something new and then pass it along to the rest of us. I can't wait for more Comparison videos in the future to test its overall durability and strength. Also to see if it truly is as equal in results as the pellet test would have us believe. The true test will be in those large Wound Cavities and how well the Plastisol rebounds i imagine. I dont mind the color at all. Your not filming the best parts with some cell phone or toy camera. 99 percent of the video from the Kronos is more then adequate and usually perfect. Hope you and your family and OG and his and every other member of Your Taoflederfamily are doing well and experiencing the best life has to offer.

That is brilliant! When you do perfect the process which I am sure you will, please let everyone know how. Again, something that I am sure you would. This looks like something that people who love seeing ballistic jell being shot could do but can’t justify spending so much on ballistic jell currently. Something that you might try is creating your own oven using a controller and vaping wire. I have seen it done for heat treating knives. But that would probably be way overkill for your needs. Awesome stuff! Thank you for all the time and dedication you and your team (family and friends) put into your videos!

It order for people to try it the process has to be simple - and cheap. The roaster pan is pretty cheap if you can find them in stock. It's entirely possible my first attempt was full of errors I did. Too hot, didn't stir enough, maybe cover the melting gel to reduce oxidation...

Hey guys I remember when I was a kid I use to drill out a 1oz slug, turning it Into a Hollow point. Then I would get some of the gun powder out of another slug. the type of powder that was a greenish colour, and it was an oblong shaped pellet type as well. And with a few drops of acetone in a small container, and mix, until it would turn to a gel blob then I'd half fill the slug with this blob of nitrocellulose. And it was would turn the slug into a sort of round that has a loud report when it hits the target. That would almost cut down a small tree. I never had the chance to see what it would do to a gel block. If it's possible would you be able to make and test these slugs on the gel block. I know it will be so much fun for you guys to see how simple this process is for such an awesome result. I was using a Smooth bore mass accelerator. Also I'd love to see what these would do in some of the slugs designed to open up like petals I suspect that it would be devastating in 1 of those copper petaled slugs. By the way I love your channel and being from Australia. Where they made it nearly impossible to own a gun. I would never have to he chance to do this again. I however could possibly get my dad to buy some shotgun rounds for me to make and send to you to test. But I'm sure you guys would be able to do this yourselves, alot easier than I could. Also once more I love your guys content alot and love it keep up the good work guys. Much love from shelly from ozzyland. 💚💜💚🙃

That's a really good sign that the company was open to making a new formula. In an era of automated menus, chat bots, and call centers it seems like less companies are willing to talk to potential new customers and think out of the box they've envisioned for themselves. If they follow through it could create more competition and possible bring prices down.

There's reason to believe that clear ballistic gel is SEBS polymer in mineral oil (aka paraffin oil) that's also used to make transparent gel candles, and is sold by Hobby Lobby and Michaels as gel wax. A gallon is $40 at Hobby Lobby. I don't know if that concentration is appropriate, but another option is to aquire SEBS/kraton powder and make the gel. Could be easy and fun to try shooting the candle "wax", though. Nonetheless, I'm super happy to see Bait Plastics is being so supportive!

For getting the gel blocks out of the mold, try using an air compressor. I was a maintenance mechanic for a company that made molded rubber parts, seals, spline spaces, blowout preventer parts and gaskets. I'd make long nozzles from small pipe, thread it on the end so it would screw into air blower attachments. A few squirts of compressed air on the edge of the parts and even the most stubborn and delicate parts would pop out of the mold in perfect shape.
