Ive spent a lifetime hunting with a .308Win, .270 Win and most recently a 6.5 Creedmoor. I doubt seriously a person could examine the wound channel of a deer taken with one of these cartridges and be assured in guessing the cartridge which was used. In my opinion, these three cartridges all perform nearly identically on deer sized game. A poorly made shot will lose game even if you shoot a 300 mag.

I've had numerous people say, "the 6.5 has a flatter trajectory, the 7mm08 is a lot more expensive etc" but for me what I hunt and the fact that I don't practice with my 7mm08, it's far superior to the 6.5 . It has better penetration, is capable for all the distances I've ever killed game (including elk) and my Weatherby will put 5 shots within. 0.5 inches every single time I test it out before a hunt. I used to shoot a 30- 06 but my Weatherby is lighter with less recoil, Win win. Just my experience , they've been dropping quicker with the 7mm08 too...better bullet selection, better placement??? My biggest beef with the 6.5CM is how so many think it will automatically turn on God Mode for them and even make them a sandwich while they're waiting for the deer to magically go in their freezer. I keep seeing videos and reading articles about how it's so much superior to every other round ever created, or will be created in the near or distant future. Personally, I love my .308 Winchester rifle. It will consistently place 5 rounds of 150gr Core-Lokt seeds into a half inch group at 100 yards, as long as I'm on top of my game. Ammo availability makes for a lot more practice time for me. On the subject of the 6.5CM and so many lost deer, you never seem to hear about everyone losing deer to the 6.5x55, even when they use the old n' slow roundnose loads. Same with so many other rounds. You said it yourself; the 6.5CM is a fad cartridge. And I'm willing to bet boxes of Remington ammo stacked *THIS HIGH* that 99.9% of those jumping on the fad-wagon never practice with their rifles, which would lead to Stormtrooper levels of sloppy shooting. If you were to show up with a 6.5CM, none of those guides would worry one bit, because they know you have practiced extensively with your rifle, and that you will place your shot with 100% accuracy to harvest the animal clean and quick.

Grew up hunting farmland in northern Michigan. One buck tag and however many farm doe permits my grandfather had left when we made it up there. If I was on the open fields I went with the .300 win mag. Always one shot and the only time I had to go very far from where it was shot was because the deer fell toward the downside of the trail and rolled to the bottom of the ravine. My dad found a .264 win mag at a pawn shop. Part of a three gun set of Winchester model 70's (looked like from one owner). Wish he had bought the other two, but water under the bridge. Lower Michigan you could not hunt with centerfire at that time, so my go to was a Winchester 1300 with rifled barrel. Open sights out of the box shot a 3 shot group under 1 1/2". But my eyesight was better back then. I also had more time to go to the range back then. Shot placement is definitely the key. I have also used it for hunting and took over 15 Gemsbok with it in my .308, ranging from 50m out to 300m. About as many Warthogs as well. No issues. But I would still not recommend it, since hunting bullets have a Guaranteed performance, since they are specifically designed to expand in specific way and retain a specific amount of weight. Match bullets don't have that.. they do expand and retain weight like any other cup and core bullet would, but there is no guarantee for how much or how little.

This year I’m trying 6.5 prc and 300 WSM. My perspective is that 6.5 Creedmoor can get the job done, but other rounds are make deer more deader.

If you already have a 270 I agree. 6.5 is super pointless.. I like the fact you can stretch a 270 out for Antelope or use it for Elk. Really if you have anything already in that range, 6.5 is just not needed. I love my .270 remington 700. It's plenty capable of taking medium game at 400-500 yards and elk at 350 yards and in. Yeah, when he said the guides hated it, made me think the guides don't actually think much about what the problem is. I bet if the .30-06 was the hotness and they were taking out a bunch of inexperienced shooters carrying .30-06 rifles, they would say the same thing. It's a pretty common theme in hunting magazines etc. Someone goes into a deer camp with a new cartridge and they guys there tell them that anything less than a 300 Win Mag isn't enough for deer hunting. I also wonder if these supposed guides are just not that good at tracking. Have they ever tracked a deer shot with bow and arrow? The 6.5 Swede has been used for decades to kill moose, the 6.5 Creed is it's ballistic twin. Put a hole in a deer's lung and you should be able to track it.

Adam... Been dealing with a number of serious health problems on this end for a while and just wanted to congratulate you on your well deserved awards (again)... Two things... First the time you're putting into these videos is amazing and how you are able to respond to the comments with your viewer numbers is hard to believe! Just one of the things that I noticed in this video involving the charts is the drop trajectory! Across the board where shots ranged beyond 600 yards to 700 yards... the drop in that 100 yard interval was quite close to the difference in the drop between the sight in distance of 100 yards and the drop at 500 yards! Something for your viewers to think about when shooting at long range. Not to mention the issues of wind drift. It's not unlike watching the tracking feature in professional golfing when teeing off! The second thing that I mentioned in a previous text with regard to having or getting some FMJ'S for reloading the .50 BMG and a host of other calibers to use if you are reloading your Barrett or your Sako .500 Jeffrey...is that my source for them (Huntington's) is no longer in business and worse still is the fact that the Australian company that made these excellent full metal jacketed bullets burned to the ground not long ago (Woodleigh) and the last news that I had was that there was not enough left for them to recover from it! I do have a small supply of them left and don't know where the other manufacturers of dangerous game ammo are getting their fmj's in the calibers beyond .458. I would still be glad to help in any way that I can and have done extensive research and testing with a lot of the bigger stuff but have done all that and am currently working on the .416 Remington and below given it's current energy ceiling of ~ 6,000 - 6,500 ft. lbs., which is about my limit now without a muzzle brake... which I am not a fan of! Thanks for all you do and keep me advised and your powder dry! Also, sorry for the length of this...

I always used a 270 for deer, and Daddy used his 30-06. He switched to a 243 years ago and it's plenty to take a deer. I wanted a shorter action lighter recoil for deer hunting and was going to get a 243 until the 6.5 Creedmoor came out. I though cool. I can use this for everything I'd hunt including elk out to what I consider ethical hunting distances with the right bullet. Copper bullets are the way to go. You can take an elk with a bow. The key is shot placement and through and through to drop their blood pressure quickly. A copper bullet in a 6.5 will easily do that. Anyway, people hate change. No wonder the Creedmoor gets no love. Anyway, there are a lot of hunters who lose deer because they are not skilled at stalking and shooting. :)

The 6.5 Creedmoor was designed to replicate the performance of the .260 Remington and the good old 6.5x55 Swede while at the same time being able to be loaded in an AR-10 magazine with 140 grain High BC bullets. It does that very well. As far as performance, there have been cartridges that can out perform it for years. The 6.5x284 was the 6.5 PRC before it was.

I mean, really the 6.5 Creedmoor was just an experiment by some guys at Hornady, necking up and down their .30 Thompson Center to see what works, until guys in competition realised how good the "6.5-30 TC" really is. They weren't really thinking about the .260 Remington - there's a very good podcast by Hornady about the creation of the Creedmoor. It's a shame the .284 Win case isn't more popular - the .284 Win Improved (.284 Shehane) was just about the most popular cartridge in top tier 1000yds F-Class until they started necking up the 6.5 PRC to make the 7 PRCW. I atill think the .284 Win is one of the most balanced cartridges in terms of power, recoil and Long Range performance.

I bought a 6.5CM specifically to hunt northern white tails with. I rolled with 30.06 for a lot of years and didn't like the meat damage with 150-180 loads. (I wish 200gr loads were redily available) used a .243 for a while and never lost a deer, but felt that it really didn't put them down with the authority they deserved. I loved the lack of recoil though and wanted something close but stronger. I came close to buying a 7mm-08 and think it's a good cartridge, but couldn't justify it at the time. Now that I've taken a couple of large bucks @ 150 yds, I think my choice was right. They didn't "drop", but didn't go far with fully penetrating double lung shots with 130gr copper solids. Out to 250 yds, I think that 6.5CM is about the perfect compromise of hitting power, recoil, and carcass preservation.

I honestly think the 6.5cm is a fine cartridge for deer. I believe there are two major things that give it a bad rap. The first being bullet choice. I would guess that many of the lost deer where simply shot with target bullets. The second reason is the darn 6.5 cm fan boys. I’ve seen more young guys at the range with the Ruger American rifle in a Boyd’s stock topped off with a Vortex crossfire scope than I can count. Not that that’s a bad setup but dang.

I think one of the better positive’s regarding the Creedmoor is it’s lack of recoil, a shooter is more likely to spend time practicing when he/she isn’t getting the crap pounded out of them and that should transfer over to being better at shot placement, both the PRC, and the Weatherby have more recoil, especially the Weatherby and that would definitely scare away some shooters. I’m always a 270 fan, and I would definitely say that it’s my go to caliber for hunting in my neck of the woods. You missed another 6.5 ish in your evaluation, the 26 Nosler , it’s ballistics fall somewhere in between the PRCs and the Weatherby I think and it’s definitely got more felt recoil then the Creedmoor.

@@jeffyoung632 You have to remember that all of the long distance ammunition is manufactured to have thinner jackets or to perform perfectly at long distances. At woods distances of under 100 yds, these bullets will possibly under perform. They will not expand as you want. If you are hunting in the eastern woods, leave the long range ammunition on the shelf. Try some regular Barnes TTSX. You must be very careful with Berger ammunition. It’s easy to confuse there target ammo from the hunting ammo. Then the Berger bullets were originally designed to expend fully inside the deer. The bullets explode. No pass through, no blood trail. Having the luxury of a few decades of time and experience, let me add a bit of perspective. Not much, if anything, that the Creed will do, that the .260 Remington won't do with the same parent case, and a couple of REAL old Mossbacks that the Europeans introduced, the 6.5x55 Swede and 6.5x57 Mauser, as well as the Mannlicher-Schonauer, and others that have all proven deadly on a lot more game, and on more continents. Now, to the other two rounds... I'll just say 6.5-06, and .264 Winchester Mag. Check the load data, and pay attention to barrel length! The original .264s had 26" tunes, not 24 and certainly not 22 like some data I've seen. So at 70 years old, what do I reach for? Used to be .308. The. 308 and 270. But the last 35 years or so, I started packing a nice little .257 Roberts on a VZ33 Mauser, 24 inch lightweight and a slim little piece of English walnut, and shoot anything I want to carry with a 120 gr Hornady HP.

No more. Are their better cartridges? Sure. But for a deer specific cartridge it's about perfect. At the time he was about 13-14 and I got him the rifle in 6.5CM for its low recoil, and with a brake it's down to 8-9lbs. I didn't want to chase a buck for hours through the chaparral. Last season we harvested a deer with a Federal round and the Swift Scirocco with an entrance thru the ribs and exit thru the front shoulder that did not leave a drop of blood in the fresh snow. The deer went about 75 yards and was recovered quickly due to the fresh snow and the broken front shoulder. Took a second deer with the Winchester Deer Season XP with entry thru the ribs and exit thru the front shoulder, deer went about 75 yards and left a paint trail to follow. It's not hard to beat the 6.5 cm but it is hard to beat it in all categories.

I’m A young Buck 39 years old I’ve tried some of the new calibers yeah there cool and the new hip thing but nothing like taking one out with a good ol caliber that’s proven I personally take a 3006 or 12 gauge slug in nh there’s not many places you can shoot past maybe 150 yards if your lucky but shot placement and practice is a must

Hi, Who Tee I like your idea of doing things a bit different than everyone else. I feel the same way love using the old school calibers, I love 270 Winchester, 6.5x55 Swede and 7x57 Mauser. I have just found a 250-3000 that is, I think a very cool caliber and not very common here I New Zealand. Thanks for another great video. Hamish

So I can honestly say that I hunt with a 6.5CM and I lost the biggest deer in my life last year. . I shot a 130gr Precision Hunter ammo. By reading the reviews everyone was using the same ammo that lost a deer. This year, I switched over to the old school Remington CL 130 grain. I’m really hoping for a good outcome bc my Nosler 21 was about 3k.

I have a 6.5 CM but haven't hunted with it. I hunt in the Southeastern United States, the forest around here is very thick and dance, 100 yards is a pretty long shot here. I have found that a fat slow-moving bullet seems to kill them better than a fast thin one does, my 30-06 inside of 100 yards was causing too much damage, I swithced to a 350 Legend and it works amazing.

I enjoyed your video, and appreciate the work you invested in gathering the data shared. Are there any benefits to the 6.5 Creedmoor over the .270 Win? Maybe so, lets see. Recoil is the biggest difference i noticed (in my rifles). Running the numbers on my two rifles, my .270 would have 18 ft/lbs of recoil where as my 6.5cm has 13 ft/lbs. Numbers dont mean much for some people, but what this means is a 140gr .270 kicks very similar to a 150gr 30-06 but a 6.5 creedmoor has a recoil similar to a 30-30 (opinion). As a reloader, i appreciate the fact the 6.5 cm is a efficient cartridge which uses less powder than a .270 Win. Depending on your loading, the 6.5 cm may use 25-35% less powder than a .270win. When purchasing powder by the lb, being able to shoot more with the 6.5cm is a benefit. The high BC offered in the long skinny bullets of the 6.5 along with a barrel twist of 1:8 does a good job in stabilizing the 6.5 over long distances. In comparison, there are generations of .270 Wins which are limited to a 1:10 barrel twist due to the bullet designs of the day. Long skinny high BC bullets were not the fad when the .270win was first designed and such a bullet wouldnt stabilize well in a 1:10 barrel twist. What this means for for the 6.5cm is the potential for a more accurate bullet which is less affected by wind drift. Running the numbers, the wind dont affect the 270 noticably more than it does the 6.5cm, but if your comparing numbers, the 6.5 wins this comparison. For what its worth, if less powder, less recoil, superior barrel life and better wind deflection in a short-action cartridge is important to you, the 6.5 cm may be a good choice for you. In my case, i prefer a short-action rifle as it can can be slightly shorter in length, lighter, and more comfortable to pack should you need to carry it for hours on end.

Shot placement is key, but my suspicion is that the speed of the Creedmoor in the common loads is a little slow because of sectional density, and especially for the copper bullets. I plan to take it antelope hunting in October and am going to be running 109 gr copper boolots hand loads around 3300 ft per second. I am expecting little tracking with that type of hypershock.

I love your videos. Thanks for another great one. You made me think a lot about these cartridges and their comparisons - thanks for that. I think where we disagree on this topic is the comparisons you made and (in some ways) how you made them. I also don't think you can have this conversation without including more data like ammunition availability, ammunition cost, rifles chambered in that caliber availability, caliber recoil, and rifle's chambered in that caliber's cost as well. To drive my point home, choosing the 6.5 WBY RPM (over the 6.5CM) the WBY provides more energy, less drop, higher velocity, and less wind drift...but comes at the cost of ~50% more recoil, ammunition being substantially more difficult to find, limited manufacturers chambering rifles in the caliber, the companies manufacturing the rifles in the caliber are typically more expensive (i.e. Weatherby), limited manufacturers of the ammunition, and ammunition being substantially (+50-70%) more expensive, etc etc. One additional item - which will require us to double click on your specific comparisons using energy and drop: I think if you'd like to determine which caliber is better using those metrics, the same bullet types in similar weight-for-the-caliber should be used. For example, if you choose the 140gr Core-lokt for the 6.5CM, I think you should select the 150gr Core-lokt in the .270 because it's a relatively similar heavy-for-the-caliber comparison in the same bullet by the same manufacturer. When making that specific comparison, the data shows the .270 having 4.1" of drop at 200y with a 100y zero and the 6.5CM having 4.2" of drop at 200y with a 100y zero. The energy shows the 6.5 CM having 1613ft lbs at 200y whereas the .270 has 1588ft lbs at the same distance. When making those comparisons, I'd argue the bullets are VERY similar. This is a good video, so please dont take this as me trashing it by any means. It's your (good/sound) opinion based on the data you used to compare the rifles. My point is I think there was a missed opportunity to share a more wholistic comparison of the calibers listed. Anywho, thanks for the video. Just giving my thoughts. Have a good one!

Man, I love watching your videos. In my honest personal opinion (for what it's worth) I've shot, hunted, and loaded for 40 years, and the 6.5 bullet is flat, when propelled with enough velocity it will work efficiently. The Creedmoor doesn't have the velocity to open the long heavy bullets. If you were to load a well constructed 95, or 100 grain bullet in the Creedmoor, it would be devastating on game

Hope you see this you just hearted my other comment. Would really like to see some more rimfire stuff. The 17wsm is really good. Everyone likes the old cartridges like 35 Remington and 30-30 Winchester. That stuff never gets old. Love the videos keep up the great work. Big thumbs up 👍

270 for the win in longer ranges but low recoil and good performance up close makes the 6.5 good for most hunting of small to medium game. I am looking for a bolt action and a semi auto AR pattern rifle for hogs and smaller game. Those numbers look real good for that so thanks for helping me narrow my choices.

I made my first long distance shot with a 270 win, so every long distance shot that I shoot regardless of calibur, will be shot from within the imprint of that first long distance shot with the 270 win, however, on that same note I didnt actually learn how to keep my head down or control recoil until I had shot my second rifle which is my 6.5 Creedmoor. I also have a 6.5 PRC but I will always remember the fun I had shooting both.Never shot an animal with the 6.5 Creedmoor but shot it the most and loved every second of it.

I have taken deer and hogs with the .243, .260 Rem. 7mm-08, and 30-06. Most were DRT, with those shot with 180gr 30-06 went the farthest, but all were recovered. Ranges from 200 yds down to 70 yards. The creedmore has the energy needed, but bullet construction and placement are critical.
@tonyrendleman167610 ай бұрын
You did a good job and your are correct however your not comparing apples to apples. The ammo you selected is not high bc ammunition. The 270 and the 6.5 Weatherby is not available in high bc unless its hand loaded. Ethical hunting should be 200-400 yards max. The PRC is a superior round in all facets because of its high bc design. Good info just a little skewed.

@WHO_TEE_WHO I have a 6.5 Creedmoor, and it does fine for Whitetail. Big doe, ran less than 40 yards and dropped. Shot was around 75 yards. No long range. I dont really hunt anywhere locally that I have a shot longer than 125 yards, so the 6.5 is fine for me. Now I want to get the "Next Level Up" gun. I hope to some day go on an elk hunt and want to know your opinion on next gun purchase if I only have 2 calibers with one of those being the 6.5 Creedmoor. What are your thoughts on the next caliber?
@HunterOne_Productions Жыл бұрын
I watch your channel religiously. Could it be that the lost deer are related to shot placement? I am requesting that you go on a hunt with the 6.5 Creedmoor and properly place the shot. Looking forward to your results.

My favorite cartridge and gun will forever be the Remington 700 mountain rifle in 270. I currently have a savage 111 lRH in 300 win mag but man that 270 was flat shooting with federal premium ballistic tip ❤

@@remingtonbundt5359 Did you know that the recoil pad on your Remington Mountain Rifle has a friggin bar of steel in it. I replaced the pad on my Remington Mountain Rifle in 7X57 Mauser and discovered the steel bar. I could only shake my head.
