This new stuff is all about selling new rifles to the youngsters who have little experience with anything not on the internet. It is like the world never existed until they reached adulthood. We end up with 20 new calibers and no support of any that are pre internet. Crazy foolishness, as the "book" was written before their time. Men have been melting chamber throats with ultra-high velocity for decades. These people will never shoot enough to notice. These young men should invest in a set of Gun Digests for the last 40 years. They might learn something.

I want this cartridge to survive and thrive. In order to do that to compete head to head with the PRC, Weatherby is going to have to do some serious strategy here. Hornady over the years has had some great marketing success, and Weatherby for many years has had their devout cult following.
@recurrenTopology2 жыл бұрын
Out of curiosity, why do you prefer this to the PRC? Consumers generally seem to benefit from a smaller number of cartridges becoming more popular, as economies of scale and competition bring prices down. Conversely, I'm of the belief that market segmentation and the resulting higher profit margins are a major factor driving the introduction of new cartridges. As result, since the WBY RPM and PRC are quite ballistically similar, my preference would be to see only one succeed long term. A priori I don't have much preference which wins out, but given the PRCs substantial lead at this point I'm inclined to hope other manufacturers just stick with it and ignore the WBY RPM. Open to changing my mind though.

Bullet construction is king, but the smaller the diameter of the bullet, the more crucial it is. For example with a .45-70 you can just throw a lead bullet in there and it will perform just fine on even large game at appropriate distances. Whereas with a .308 cal you need you need some sort of cup and core but as long as it’s soft pointed it will be fine. I would argue that 6.5 is the line where you don’t just need A good bullet for the job but you THE good bullet for the job. Bullet selection becomes absolutely essential with bullets that small and that’s why a lot of people would prefer something a little bigger.

Would love to see y’all talk about either 8.6 Creed or 375 Raptor.

I may have this wrong, but what exactly is this new cartridge bring to the table? It appears to fall between the 264 Win Mag and the 26 Nosler. I understand the 6.5 craze that is currently happening but I think this one is going to die a fast death unless it is not solely proprietary to Weatherby. It will surely die if it stays proprietary. The rifle offered is expensive and everyone knows that there is expensive ammo and then there is WEATHERBY expensive ammo. What about barrel wear? The 264 Win Mag was plaqued with that moniker so will this also be true for the 6.5 RPM? I believe there are better options for big game other than this. Would this be a niche cartridge? Just my thoughts. I do love these segments and seeing the comments that everyone shares!

I dont see it lasting either, as the 6.5 prc is the same performance, will be cheaper and more available. I wouldnt worry about barrel life: its a hunting round. For that reason, if i wanted a hotrod 6.5/26 cal id just go whole hog and get the 26 Nosler. Neither the prc nor the rpm excite me, as I can push the same weight bullet (130g) out of my 270 Win at the same velocity 🤷♂️

They spend all that money designing a cartridge that really doesn’t do anything that is not already out there but want $3,500. For the gun and twice as much for the ammo which you can’t find anywhere🤔😳

The problem with all weatherby cartridges is that if your not a hand Loader you have limited bullet selection.

Why this over 7mm prc? Or 300 wsm

I am a 30-06 man, but I am thinking of my next rifle. 6.5 Weatherby RPM or 6.5 -300 Weatherby.

I know it's an incredibly inefficient and enemic Rd. But to my eye the .30 for the .30 carbine is my favorite looking round and I can't explain y

I know Ryan likes the 6.5 RPM. I’ve been thinking about the 257 but now leaning towards the 6.5x300. When’s the 6.5x300 episode coming out?
@gpearce112 жыл бұрын
It's an objectively good cartridge, but it's just too close to 6.5 PRC for me. It's definitely faster, but you can easily get within 100 fps with the PRC, and I really don't think that's enough to be worth the significant increase in ammo cost and decrease in rifle selection (especially if you're a lefty). If it was consistently over 150 fps faster I might give it more credit, but for only 100 fps you've gotta be a pretty hardcore Weatherby fan to not just get a 6.5 PRC.

The benefit I see (for reloaders) is the long skinny brass lasting longer than short and fat brass, and for all shooters, being less finicky and feeding better. But I can definitely agree that ballistically it may be ahead of a PRC, but not lifetimes ahead.
@gpearce112 жыл бұрын
@Idaho Hunter True that, but if you're not a handloader, I struggle to justify any Weatherby chambering at the best of times, as factory ammo is simply too expensive and scarce. 280 AI suffers from the same problem; on paper, it's arguably the best all-around cartridge I've ever seen, but if you're not a handloader it's a waste of time because factory ammo barely exists.
@Bowstringdotcom2 жыл бұрын
@@gpearce11 I can understand that sentiment, can't argue there.
@ginacudia8615 Жыл бұрын
@@gpearce11 If the gun is of hunting and not target practice, once sighted in, a box of ammo should last a while. Sportsman's Warehouse seems to always have the 127 in stock. The same argument could be made regarding drinking expensive vs cheap whiskey, and I bet most people will spend more regularly on whiskey than ammo. Drink what you like!

As much as Ryan likes this cartridge, there's one very similar.. 264 win mag..
@noahhorinek Жыл бұрын
Yeah, but the good ol win mag maxes out on pressure before the load densities get high. The RPM doesn't have that problem.
@devongreen7308 Жыл бұрын
@noahhorinek I'd imagine with a newer rifle 65,000psi is definitely attainable, I'm not saying your wrong, and I'm not saying that the RPM isn't a better case. But when you have a cartridge that's been around since 1958 or so, and then a new cartridge that's almost a twin ballistic wise come out in the last few years, 60+ years later. There's a bit of a stretch on wallets and attention spans at that point. Like why get a 6mm Creedmoor when your .243 win has been doing just fine.
