Why 3 Inches Makes the Difference in Design

Three inches can make the difference in design. Whether it be the height of the backing on a barstool or the rise and run of a stair, slightly altering how these different design elements look and feel can completely change our experience with them. Those elements may seem small but what happens when we think about this at an urban scale?

Wow this channel is going to blow up, the quality of the video is simply outstanding, i've just finished this video and I think I'm gonna binge watch the rest. I know I'm nitpicking but at 2:13 I believe there's a slight error in the source because you wrote puiblic. Otherwise the visuals are very clear and I love the ideas.

Yeah this was an instant sub for me. The only thing I didn't like about this video was that I was so focused on it that I accidentally downed my plant while watering it! If I'm being nitpicky though, I think one aspect that wasn't addressed was how these standards interact with each other and conflict. I think a lot of people would be onboard with making changes to improve bike lane standards, but those same set of older accessibility standards are also tend to be obstacles to establishing new ones. So when establishing new standards, it's not enough to make incremental changes. They need to be considered within an entire ecosystem of policies and regulations.

That is a very important point! Thank you for adding to the conversation. Yes, finding ways to update standards and intentionally make them inclusive and flexible is a must. It's a challenge in itself but there are always opportunities for improvement!

3:17 if they changed the ruling for the design of stairs and I come into a new building with the steps being 3 inches more apart. I will throw a riot.

Oh yea, the bike lane: Just last week in Germany I crashed into an SUV with my 3-wheeled cargo bike just because in the particular area the narrow, 1m (no wiggle-room, right next to expensive cars) obligatory to use-"bike lane" from the 70s is constantly interrupted by driveways for cars which on a 3-wheeler is a serious up-and-down / horizontal shift roller coaster balancing act. This would have never happened in the Netherlands where bike lanes are straight, clear, wide enough, used by millions per day on a variety of different bicycle types. But the stairs got me as well: In NL they are like 2/3 the size of my feet, often smoothened out over the years which caused me falling down the stairs with my bicycle once. It was the day I started wearing shoes with a better profile. So yes: Size matters - it's not always our clumsiness - far more often it is bad design. I think designs should be tested with drunk people to make sure it works in edge scenarios or just clumsy people.

Those stairs are designed like that on purpose.. they are literally a security feature. Every set of stairs should have one or 2.. my paranoid grand parents put 3 in when building there old house. The fact someone standardized stairs is insane to me. Why? How?This has been a thing since the romans. They are meant to trip or slow down someone breaking in...
