Not sure about 55m, but 35 vs 50 is that KZbin favorite discussion which is the go to lens.

The 55 was my first Sony lens. Seems permanently attached to the 7r3. Beautiful lens for my needs.

Really cool shots and images. It's my favorite lens which I use almost exclusively :) I will add to your list that the Zeiss compared to some other 50mm has beautiful rendering and micro-contrast. It's my carry everyday lens.

I really appreciate that, thank you. Ya I always had an interest but thought it was such an odd focal length at first (still do), but have kinda fallen in love with it. Hope you can get your hands on one soon!

Yeah, I’m with you. The 50/55mm focal length on full-frame renders portraits with a compelling not overly flattened, presence and makes managing foreground/background composition easier than wider lenses, even in cluttered environments. A good one will give you high contrast even at f1.8 or f/2, which makes it even easier to reduce background distractions. The main thing, though, is that shooting with any fixed length lens will give a set of pictures a “body of work” coherence that will be more artistically appealing than a bunch taken with different focal lengths and perspectives. Some people like 35mm for this but I think it’s prone to getting boring postcard shots. And longer lenses tend to objectify subjects. So, 50 it is!
@fixedkoreaАй бұрын
@@kenschwarz8057 haha 50 indeed! Ya tried with 35mm for about a year and a half and was nothing wrong with it but just wasn’t me in the end I suppose

The best focal lengths for portraits are 85 mm to around 100 mm. 50 to 55 mm are not nearly long enough. In fact, the VERY best lens for portraits is the 105mm f/2 DC Nikkor -

85mm field of view is my favourite but I love 55 for travel. So for me it’s the best of both worlds. Turn on APSC mode and it’s an 84mm 👊

This is very cool lens, I totally agree with you! One of friends does still and video and the images coming outta that lens were really lovely. They had a very unique look to them I quite liked. Since this particular lens is now 10 years old (January 2014) as much as I would love to add it to my collection I probably will go the 50mm f/1.4 GM. As we know if you are buying these equipment their cost is not low. Still think this is an outstanding lens though. Thanks for the video!

I use it, too, but it can be too tight for narrow streets. I wonder how it compares to Sony G 40mm 2.5 in terms of details and “look”, have you had a chance to test that?

It’s a great lens. I considered replacing it with a Sigma lens with an aperture ring but decided against it, it’s too good a lens in size, weight and performance to let go of. On my Leica M camera I use a 50mm Summilux ASPH - which I sometimes use on my Sony - but I have no reason not to use this lens as I will get equally satisfying photos with the advantage of AF. It is definitely a great portrait lens.

For me 35mm f18 is my go to for all around lens. 55mm is too tight for photographing foods on the table and people across the table in front of me. For street photography I preferred 85mm f1.4 for nice compression from afar. 85mm also keep you distance from the subject so they look more natural and at ease.
