This is something called ULI 5G. This is where the site is configured to be capable of aggregating its 4G connection with a 5G connection on the site or another nearby. Devices are designed to show 5G even when you're not actually connected to it because the network is expected to accurately tell your device this "ULI" value, and hence devices assume there is a 5G signal nearby.

The marketing of 5G went over board yes but that doesnt mean Sub6 GHz is as slow as 4G. Infact it is bare minimum 5 times faster, half the latency and has the capacity to be upto 20 times faster than 4G provided the mobile phones can handle the computation required. Millimeter wave was deisgned for industrial applications and mobile users probably wont get it much or they will get it in specific places like stadiums etc.

Jesus Christ is the propitiation for the whole world's sins. They that believeth and are baptized (with the Holy Spirit) shall be saved; but they that believeth not shall be damned. Those led by the Holy Spirit do not abide in wickedness. *God is ONE manifesting himself as THREE;* the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit! Bless him! *For these three are one.* As I am led by the Holy Spirit, nothing I state is a lie, but the truth of God. Anyone who tells you differently is misinformed or a liar. They do not know God, nor led by him. Anyone who *claims* to be a Christian and is against what I am doing, and where I am doing it; the Holy Spirit does not dwell within them, they lack understanding. They know not God, read his word, and their religion is in vain. Do not hear them, they will mislead you, the lost cannot guide the lost.

When you trust in God and cast your cares (worries, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts) upon him, they will be NO MORE! Know that there is power in the name Jesus Christ! His name casts out demons and heals! The world is wicked, evil, and of the devil. I too, was a wicked sinner of the world before I opened my heart to God. I am living proof of God's work and fruitfulness! He is an active God who hears the prayers of his! God's children are set apart (holy) and righteous. The devil is a liar that comes to steal, to kill, and to destroy; that includes your relationship with God! Open your heart to God, repent of your sins (he will forgive you), and let him direct your path. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands and purify your heart, lest you walk with the devil and follow him to hell.

Another thing is that we can't use Pixel Phones here on 5G. Even the latest phones, 6A, 6, 7...don't work on 5G - and i think this is stupid.

Hi Arun, I am a little bit confused. I used to be an integration field engineer for the cell towers in Bulgaria and while I have worked we had true 5G network, but the interesting part is that our network use the centimeters wave instead of the mmWaves. The frequency spectrum that is used is between the 3.1-4.6 Ghz which is related to the cm waves (super high 3Ghz - 30Ghz) instead of mm waves, and also the speed is from 800mbits up to 1.5 gigabits, that is the intriguing part of the whole scenario. Maybe there is a different standard for each country to be used.
@meloney

A bit late, but there are different types of 5G. Some use different wavelenghts for a slower speed while gaining extra range. In some areas its better for example if you cut down the speed 50 % but for that you have double or more range with just one 5g tower. Especially for rural areas.

As one of 5g engineers, I need to clarify a few steps: 5g never was only mmWaves, it was marketed through mmWaves due to more obvious difference. In Europe mmWaves weren't given to mobile operators yet, thus 5g sign in UK means 3.5 GHz = sub 6 GHz (still different frequency to 4G). 5g is really not finalised yet, thus taking 5g contract you become more a beta tester than a luxurious user. It will receive updates each year, so stay tuned. Do not expect 5g to be a game changer outside of cities, it will require a lot of antennas to be available there (no financial sense). The demand on data rises every year, so the fact that during transition period users would not receive problems would be fantastic. Without 5g, 4g would be not able to hand a load in a few years.

Few points here. Every G standard contains 2 planes, user plane and traffic plane. The first one is related to the data you receive and the second one is how the mobile phone is being controlled in a network. 5G is in essence backward compatible and your phone may show the 5G logo if the phone is controlled by the 5G traffic plane but may utilize the very old 2G/3G frequencies. That is totally OK. And I think this was the thinking strategy of the operators and NW manufacturers. The 4G revenues were stagnating and they needed a new umpf but didn't know how to achieve it. mmWave is very long ahead, no one wants to install a transceiver every few 100 meters, no operator can recover from that. So, the operators instead tricked you to believe that 5G is usable for you, which it isn't at the moment and won't be in 2-3 years. However, I would still go and buy a 5G phone because those chipsets are produced with more advanced technology (10-12nm vs. 5nm), meaning they have more performance and they last longer on battery power.

I remember 5G coming out when I was working at Best Buy.. I never had high hopes for it. The range alone was enough for me to call this a dud. The amount of towers you have to set up and the unreliability of the signal is a recipe for disaster. My exact sentiment was what you said in the video: I would much rather have more reliable 4G and more coverage than 5G speeds. I always told people when I was selling phones that a 5G plan isn't worth it lol

Other companies followed suit with low band 5g, but made little to no effort to educate the customers on the difference between the two. A very interesting video and explains something I experienced recently: I live in the Philippines, in the middle of nowhere. There is 4G available here ahead it's ok. A couple of weeks ago I went to the mainland and noticed my phone switched to 5G, while on the highway quite a bit far away from any city. I saw this as strange - in my head 5G was a predominantly urban thing and wasn't even capable of replacing 4G on a wide area. The other thing I noticed is that each time my phone switched to 5G it basically lost service (as in connected to the tower but the data rate was too slow to actually use, compared to 4G which was fine) .. thanks for a very informative video.

Every engineer knew that there is no way to eliminate delay over a network with physical distance involved. What the vendors and carriers were really talking about is distributing the server services nearer to the clients phones to reduce latency. Yes they definitely mislead everyone except those who understand physics. And the mmwave issues with range are also something that we cant fix yet (laws of physics apply again) so expect that to be very slowly implemented due to the extreme cost involved.

The one use case were 5G mmWave really makes sense is in large venues, arenas and stadiums. If you live in a city and frequently go to sporting events as many people do this is a huge benefit. The transmitters can be positioned in a way to avoid obstruction. This is made trivial by the configuration of most arenas where the line of sight is of crucial importance. i’m sure that many of us have experienced extremely slow or essentially useless connections when attending a big event not only with this, improve the experience for the people in the arena, but will also improve the experience for people surrounding the arena in the already dense parts of the city, where the old 4G towers would be overwhelmed, stealing, bandwidth from even those outside.

Before I did that, I started to do some research into 5G and found what you had explained about it bundling all of the other network speeds into one. I was pretty frustrated with this to be honest and 5G is forever ruined for me. My only concern is that I've noticed 4G LTE goes much slower than it previously did. But now I'm not actually sure if I'm getting LTE or just regular 4G or even 3G. I miss the days of when if I had the LTE symbol, it meant I was going to actually have a good, solid connection.

you cannot have 4G without LTE, because LTE is the technology 4G is based on. you can however, have LTE, without it being 4G, So called 3G LTE, if you should describe it correctly, which nobody does, because bad marketing, it's also known as 3.9G because it was the last 3G technology, before it became 4G, it was based on the ideas and technologies in development for 4G, and serve as a middle link between the 2 technologies, however, it doesn't fulfill the requirements sat for 4G by the 3GPP association. therefore, it was technically illegal to call it 4G, and therefore, they often just call it LTE, for marketing purposes, to make it sound like it's 4G.

Whoa! Don't feed the conspiracists. The 5G beams do not have more energy - they are actually weaker because the network relies on lots of local low power nodes that are more like a WiFi router in the street than the old cellular towers. They are also less likely to use the millimetre waves because they are "less bouncy" and mean reception in your home would be rubbish. Better out in the street itself where the node can aim a low power signal roughly in your direction instead of beaming it in all directions. But yes, the phone networks have hyped a network that isn't ready yet. Just like they did with 3G and 4G when they were new. There's no reward for buying the latest tech in this way, since you are basically a guinea pig helping fund it.

Thanks for enlightening me. The politics aspect is mildly infuriating but I understand. This video feels very timely and was explained really well. I live in a country with no 5g infrastructure and often wonder how significant the difference would be if we had it. Turns out we're not really missing much. My Internet speed is sufficient for what I use it for (streaming, browsing and occasional downloads of files that don't exceed 5GBs at a time). Your videos are so interesting and charming it's hard to get distracted. Thank you.

So far I'm very satisfied with the 5G that I use at home (I live in Finland). I live in an area with multiple apartment buildings, so there must be a lot of other users in the area. I have a 1000M deal (45 Euros per month, unlimited data) and in the beginning I was getting maximum of 300M download, however one day it just exploded and now I am getting most of the time very close or even over the maximum promised speed. It is actually hard to reach the bandwidth limit even if I try. Only once, one day it was slow (around 200M), the rest of the time very good speeds near or over 1000M. I am fully trying to use the bandwidth as much as possible. According to the operator, my account is clocking around 17-20TB download traffic every month and no one has complained yet. 😀

I really felt this. There was this time over the last two months where I lost internet at my home. So I was cool, no problem, it's out in my area. So I download Microsoft Teams for I can tell my team, that my internet was down, which also happened to several other employees. It took my phone forever to download. Because my phone only uses 5G because I have a Samsung. If it senses it, it uses it, even though the 4G LTE network is way better in my area. Called my Provider and was told that the 5G plan I have isn't good enough, that I needed to be the top tier one. Bill increased by 30 dollars. Just to use my phones 5G function. A feature, that as an owner of this phone. I should be allowed to disable.

0:49 companies didn't figure out only in 2015 that higher frequencies mean more speed. It's was a well known fact. The trade off was range from the tower. Higher frequencies don't travel that far and can't penetrate objects like walls and trees quite as well as lower frequencies can. This means many more expensive towers are needed for the same coverage. Higher frequency also does not mean more energy. Each peak and trough of the wave is one bit. Higher frequencies have more of them. Therefore the data rate increases. There is nothing else to it

One funny thing I very quickly found out about 5G was when I was standing in open are with coverage, if I faced direction of the tower, I got full signal and speed, but if I turned 180 degrees, signal would immediately drop due to my body being in between and connection would get less reliable at slower speeds. Like it had hard time penetrating my body or getting around it. Only reason why I got it in my subscription now is because it eventually got included "without extra charge", probably used for mobile service providers favorite thing, rising subscription few months latter. Since they always do this, first add to the subscription plan, wait for 3-6 months then rise the price and say how it is market conditions and them offering more and more... without answering question about who asked for more in the first place. :-D Then some people think they are smart ans change providers, since not all of them do it at the same time, but within 2-4 months latter, they all hiked their prices. Some just delay it to get people to come over, but each time they take turns. And that is lovely world of local service providers. Anyway, generally, it is just early days of 5G and it has slow deployment, plus with making things messier with whole different bands, some slower for range, others faster for few locations, they tend to also oversell whole coverage, since you see slow wavelength coverage on their maps, not fast one. Though I will admit, having phone to auto switch between everything kind of works fine for me, usually when it gets too bad it will switch to 4G. I only had to manually switch back when it was first deployed, since phone would want to stay on 5G and that made experience so much worse. But dunno if it is improvements from service providers, updates to phone or both, something made it better.

I had 5G added to my phone plan, i’ve been able to use it in one place I’ve been at. Sure, 900Mbit/s speed is really impressive, but I’ve never needed more than maybe 10Mbit/s anyways. There’s also ”5G” outside my house but it’s less than 5Mbit/s and switching to 4G gives me ~65Mbit/s.

A phone switching between 3G and 4G was seamless because there were two radios, 1 for each band. A phone switching between 4G and and 5G is disruptive because one radio has to disconnect from one signal then establish a link with the other. 5G has been the bane of my mobile life, constantly switching bands and breaking whatever app I happen to be using at the time.

Great video! This is a very frustrating topic and I can add to your info. 18 months ago AT&T, my 10 plus year carrier in the US, shut off my two cell phones saying we were being forced to transfer over to phones that were 5G. The free phones they sent to replace mine were not even close to the smart phone functionality I had. I managed to convince them to turn my service back on until I could find a suitable replacement. In the process they refused to support two new options that I chose. I found that Verizon was less money, approached AT&T about matching and they told me that the price is the price, they don't negotiate and that they were reducing their offering even further soon. I made a transition to my new phone if choice, and moved to Verizon, come to find out Samsung never told anyone in the process that dual SIM is only supported in Europe. They could port my number but not activate it. And then refused to switch me back to my old phone citing they cannot go back to a 4G phone. All of this to say that I rarely see my phone in 5G mode and it's usually at an airport. Which is ironic because there have been fights about banning 5G at airports due to interference with transmission. Arun keep doing your thing! Keep digging! These facts are maddening and need to be heard! Thank you for showing the root cause, supporting with facts. The phone companies are part of the problem too.

Wow that’s terrible customer experience. Especially since non of that was required, I could understand if you where on a 2G only phone and they where shutting down the 2G network. But not for 4G. They could have easily only made it possible to sign up for 5G service when upgrading, instead of forcing you. In Sweden the major carriers support 5G and it’s included on the plans with more than 15GB for all carriers (less on some). Although one carrier only let you use the 5G network at 4G speed unless you pay an additional fee… But none of them have forces upgrades. And if you are on a low-price-carrier (that’s using the network of the main carriers but have less customer support) you can not get 5G yet. Although given that at least on my carriers network I have 5G at the train-station and nowhere else, that’s not really any loss.

Damn. Yeah I’ve had terrible experience with AT&T in the past and wouldn’t recommend them to anyone. Been on T-Mobile since 2018 and never been happier. Phone bill never fluctuates from month to month and one of my family members was still using a 4g phone until relatively recently. All our old AT&T phones worked when we first switched over by just swapping the SIM cards. There’s no price hike between 4G and 5G as well.

I had a similar experience with AT&T, except my phone actually is 5G, but they would shut my service off anyway. Unfortunately, with AT&T you can't use Xiaomi 5G phones due to a lack of certifications required to run on their network, so my newly purchased Poco F3 (which is most definitely 5G) was a no-go for use with them. Ended up switching to T-Mobile.
