When I miss them short, it’s because I’m looking through the net. For drilling I like to drape a sheet over the net so I can’t look through the net and it becomes much easier to focus on my target height over the net.

Another reason to get to the ball early is to hit it at its highest point. This is where the ball is moving the slowest and it puts geometry on your side. When I see someone letting the ball drop before striking it, it's often because they have a racquetball background where the goals are very different.

Jeffrey is right. That drop was too high. This is common and sometimes unavoidable after a hard return. Just do another drop. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 drops before you earn your way to the kitchen.

You're hitting them to high...
@stevenjanoff8496
@stevenjanoff8496 5 ай бұрын
Same thing applies to dinks; but you need sufficient height to clear the net, so it’s not necessarily to ‘high’, it’s more likely to hard. Holding the paddle too tightly can cause too firm a shot too, thereby sending the ball ‘higher and deeper’. Watch for these things as well as trajectory.
@davemohla9700
@davemohla9700 5 ай бұрын
I play open play as well and do that all the time. When an opponent hits a drop, I back up so it bounces and when it's at its apex, I drive it with a windshield wiper motion into the corner of the court for a winner. Because the drop is so slow and I'm so close to the net, it's easy to run around it and bang it into the corner or at my player feet with a topspin forehand. 90% of the drops he hit in this video would get that punishment. My favorite, though, is when my opponent hits the drop too high or deep and it's an easy put away. Some folks I've played will then try to hit their drops lower and that's when they start hitting them into the net and getting frustrated. So they go back to hitting drives.

One reason I have started hitting more third shot drops to the middle of the court is because the net is two inches shorter in the middle than it is at the outer edges. It makes a difference.

If you’re hitting GOOD drops, no. If you’re hitting MEDIOCRE drops, yes. A good drop will cause the drive to go into the net, or, more commonly, long and out of the court.

Your paddle should be on a High to Low path as if it's following a crescent 🌙 moon.. Strike the ball at the BOTTOM of the moon and move your paddle towards the target... If your hitting the "tape" ( top of net ) you're getting close.. Hang with it.. IT'S NOT THAT EASY...

Dropping really only works if you have the wheels to get to the kitchen as a threat to a short kitchen dink. If your slow no reason to expect them to try and keep you back and helping you out, just because you dropped it into the kitchen from the baseline. Your starting to see this in the pros now. If you are slow, learn how to lob.

3rd shot lob should not be a go to shot at the 4.0plus level (or against any decent badminton/tennis player). If it works in your rec group I guess that's fine but you will definitely hit a wall in improvement unless you have a reliable 3rd shot drop plus/minus drive. Lob is viable as a surprise maybe 3 times a game at the most though (assuming you can disguise it well and hit a ton of topspin).
@gg80108
@gg80108 Ай бұрын
@@ender133 Works good on those who are so proud they hit a nice deep return and the are at the NVZ, until the ball goes over there head drops near the baseline, they have to let it bounce, none of that hitting out of the air. like any skill if you cannot get the lob high and deep 70% of the time, just lose the point quicker doing something else.
@ender133
@ender133 Ай бұрын
@gg80108 at the 4.0plus level of play, esp 4.5plus, those lobs are getting crushed unless theyre going out (even if your opponent is short) since its mostly a timing issue. If your lob wins you more points when hit regularly compared to your drops or drives hit regularly your not a 4.0plus and/or your opponents are not 4.0plus. It's fine as a a surprise shot every now and then mostly from the kitchen. The lob has been a thing for at least a few months now. See how many 3rd shot lobs get hit in ppa.... You might get the first one to bounce but if your opponent knows you hit the lob in consistently they'll just start smashing them. Those with other racket spots backgrounds are happy to hit overheads from the baseline (still way closer than a tennis serve) as a advantageous shot.
