hi , im building a log cabin in new brunswick canada , pretty cold winters, its cathedral ceiling with half loft , im using purlin and ridge pole roof structure, with log rafters, then horizontal decking, 1 x 8 rough boards right over the rafters to be seen from the interior . i need this roof insulated, i also want cedar shingles, i have a bunch of 2inch blue xps foam board , that id like tu use on top(exterior) of those 1x 8's , now there is this guy that promotes putting ice and water shield all over the decking first, then that foam, then osb or plywood , then roofing, thats sound easy and cheap, but im affraid moisture and heat would condensate on the underside of the cold osb , getting trapped, creating mold and other problems, could i instead, use your method ? i mean, 1 x 8 boards, membrane over whole thing as vapor barrior , then blue foam, then instead of sheating, id put vertical 1x4s , then skip sheating, then cedar? would that take care of insulating my cabin, and protecting against heat, and moisture/condensation issues?

Wow, I've never seen anything like that before. Looks extra expensive. I suppose I'd go the extra step and prevent stain before installation.

It's done almost without exception on European and Russian roof installations. They've got a couple centuries of experience on us so I think there is wisdom behind this practice. We've adopted this practice on all our metal, cedar, slate, and tile roofs. Big difference in the way the roof performs and the quality of the installation...

Why not just reinstall the shingles on the original skip sheathing that's already there? It's been done this way for 100's of years. One would think that it's the proper way to install wood shingle/shake roofs. I'd imagine that it provides a lot more air flow than a small vented channel and like I say, it's worked for 100's of years without any plywood, felt paper or ice shield why go through all this extra fiasco, money and labor when it's subpar to the original way.

the venting (cold roof) has been shown to minimize condensation. There should also be a VB on the warm side of the "sandwich" in a cold climate. Look up building science for more on this method (I am in no way connected with them).

@@ecostudio1044 the original skip sheathing was already a cold roof construction. The only reason logically that I could ever see for the original skip sheathing to be altered or changed as if it is damaged. No other reason. The problem today is the cedar shingle itself. There is no more old growth wood. Therefore the shingles themselves are inferior and do not last.

@@ricardom.2687 I am guessing that a breathable membrane is about all one needs, over sheeting and tar paper to get the same effect in cold midwest weather. I rather like having a tight attic space. I believe one can go to Canada to old-growth still. I am pretty sure my present lot of cedar shingles are from a fine old-growth source. I mean it took some effort but they can be had.
