well worth a comment, I love the idea of your journey from the laying of the keel to the day you launch and then the real journey starts, Good luck. best regards from the UK>

I just stumbled across this- she’s looking good. You sound a lot like me when I started. I’ll catch up on your other videos. Keep after it ! Greg R. DD48 Tardigrade

Hi Greg, I've seen photos of your build, exceptionally well done! I only hope mine ends up half as nice. Feel free to contact me via e-mail from the contact link on youtube if you'd be willing to answer some questions. Scott

Thanks for sharing. It has been great getting a look at your process and maybe the nicest boat building "shed" I've seen yet. I hope to start a Captain Eddie (from George's book) soon. Where you planning to launch? I was going to build in Nebraska and truck to Iowa to the Missouri then Mississippi Rivers, not sure that's viable, but sounded like an adventure.

I'm in Western Iowa, so the Missouri would be closest; but I've spent a bit of time boating on the Missouri and decided it wouldn't be my first choice. Fast current and little to no support infrastructure. Not a great place to test out systems on a new boat. So I was thinking maybe the Mississippi or lake Michigan, have to see where I can find suitable resources. The captain Eddy would be easier on the Missouri, you could even run commissioning tests on a lake first. On my boat shed, thanks. I knew it would be multi year project and I wanted to work in the winter, so something a little more substantial was in order. Good luck.

Don't forget a sledgehammer. Becalmed middle of the ocean, engine down, no wind for your sails. Silence the voices in your head. Lol. May I suggest, and I've seen it on Seahorse Ducks, inset steps on your transom (sacrifice a bit of room aft cabin) down to a swim platform, easier to board your skiff, dive on your prop to remove kelp ( which I just had to do). Your probably going to have a 20-40hp outboard for your skiff, put a outboard mount on the platform and have a get moving back up.

George had those steps on the Evolution versions of the Duck 48, they were steel only. He wrote he couldn't find a good way of doing it in wood. I really considered it, and tried to come up with a way to do it in wood. I think with considerable use of glass and epoxy it could have been done. But not only do you lose the inside area from the steps, but also would have to lose the aft swept transom, which cuts down on inside room and makes the boat less sea kindly. All that said, I tried really hard to talk myself into doing it. In the end I decided against it. I sort of wanted the walk through design of the evolution boats too, but building in wood just didn't leave enough room for tankage. So something had to give, I ended up going for the original design.

So is Gale Buehler selling plans now?

The short answer is yes, at least when I started the project she was. For the long answer see my video post today.

Sir. You forgot one Kind Of Cat sailboat please take a look what Sailing Nahoa team are building. But if you have money for Fuel Your ship will be Fine. Sir if you going to do any Fiberglassing please Vacuum Bag it to keep Epoxy weight and Waste down. Also please look at Kevlar for the Bottom. There may be a Carbon/Kevlar company help you out. When you we see a week or two weeks behind?
@DieselDuck48IoBuild-rp4dn Жыл бұрын
Weight isn't an issue with a full displacement hull. Carbon isn't called for, Kevlar might be an option but is really overkill in this case. I think Nahoa is building an aluminum hull aren't they? That would be sweet but expensive and not something I'm not willing to try to learn. I should be caught up in a month or so, then videos will be real time.
