A top US Air Force (USAF) general says that Lockheed Martin F-35s have had at least one encounter with China’s Chengdu J-20s. The fifth-generation stealth fighters reportedly came face to face over the East China sea. The top US general’s revelation comes weeks after a carrier-borne USAF F-35 crashed in the South China Sea.

That comment regarding the KJ-500 is more important than it sounds He suggested that KJ-500 and the PL-15 missile can be data linked, which means the lower frequency KJ-500 radar can detect a stealth target from far away, and directs other fighters to fire a PL-15, the KJ-500 can then use data link to direct the PL-15 to the approximate target of the stealth plane, by then the PL-15 can turn on its own active radar seeker, and since it's close to the stealth target, the missile can get a solid lock on target. This is the nature of networked warfare

The comparison of both the jets is a bit complicated i think. While F-35 is a multirole aircraft focusing mainly on ground strikes after air superiority has been established, the j-20 is a frontline air superiority fighter. I feel the comparison or an engagement between the raptor and j-20 would be more appropriate

The F-35 has never been multirole. It's a specialized ground attack fighter capable of carrying air-to-air missiles and torpedoes and with the targeting sensors to go with them. The F-22 is the air superiority fighter, for example.

But recent upgrades have made it more capable for air to air combat..but even then so, if pitted against a 5th gen superiority fighter like the j-20, it might still struggle. The US should have focused more on developing the raptor alongwith the fat amy instead of focusing on the f-15ex. Although thats my personal opinion 😅

F22's combat range is too short for East/South China Sea, so unless it can get on an aircraft carrier it's not suited for the job.

In so many words the General is saying that the F-35 was intercepted by the J-20 and that the KJ-500 was instrumental in the occurence of the event. The General's careful use of the words in relation to "getting close", is indicative of and consistent with the actions taken by aircraft that are intercepted. This is why he places emphasis on the intentions and roles of the J-20. Taking this into consideration says a lot about the Chinese, in their coordinated utilization of AEWACS and their platform of stealth technology that is able to exploit or create vulnerabilities in U.S. stealth capabilities. It would appear that the Chinese are just as effective as the U.S., in some areas of tactical electronic warfare systems.

stealth is overrated if the adversary having capable radars. like chinese AWACS is having 3 types of radar inside that circular dome (or whatever). not to mention sattelites (visual & radar) and ground radar. one thing that should be noted that every weapons/devices that china have, it always tinkered and upgraded, the same j20 last year will be different than j20 this year. improvement is daily job, not a project or waiting for certain condition happened.

You are pretty good at the propaganda, but you forgot to mention that the PL 15 can only target large aircrafts like transporters, refueling crafts, AWACS etc. Which has never been proved in combat btw. Also, it does not have sufficient maneuvering capability to target normal fighters. While we are at this, normal Chinese fighters do not have radars to pick up targets at long ranges, only the top tier fighters like the J-20 have this capability. Most of the Chinese Air Force still flies old copies of old 1970 era fighters... which too have been never proven in actual combat, just paper figures released by China... which are not really trustworthy.

I would say one thing though the criticisms people saw a few years ago about the J20 were not entirely baseless propaganda. J20 did have severe issues with their engines, but it has been improving since 2019 and that is also when you see the production amount of J20 go straight up. The WS15 engine was already tested on a J20 prototype last year, and would most likely be in service this year or next. Also there's the two seat variant.

Besides that, the j20 was a deal between Russia and china, where Russia would build the engine, and china would use stolen blueprints from the f35, su29 and the design is literally the same as mig 1.14 in functionality, the kenards even functions the exact same way 😂 they designed the plane around the Russian engine, later backed off and made their own, and when they finally stole blue prints of the f22 thurst vectoring capabilities, they decided to change the engine all together. So they designed a plane that was not meant for thurst vectoring, and later shoved it down it's throat. When designing a very specific plane with a specific job, you design the engine and then the plane, not the other way around😂😂 and since when was musk the representative and ambassador of the tech world 😂

Guess, what? Landing a fighter jet on a runway that's effectively just 100 feet long in the middle of the ocean is inherently very difficult and hazardous. Any country that operates aircraft carriers knows that occasional accidental aircraft losses is an unavoidable part of carrier operations. FYI, the Russian aircraft carrier lost two fighters within two weeks during operations off of Syria.

Sounds like a LOT less appreciation than you hyped up. Was mostly appreciation of their professionalism, we are mainly used to dealing with Russian pilots, who are wildly unprofessional in these encounters and often do stupid things. Also, the reduction of F35 orders has nothing to do with the J20. The NGAD program has been accelerated and the plane has been flown, they are dedicating more resources in that direction. While our competitors are just now fielding 5th Gen fighters in small numbers, we're well into production of 6th generation planes.

Yes, more hyping up of J20 by pink warriors. There is very little about the encounter that we know of. Did the F-35 know the J20 was there? Many Chinese automatically assume that J20 intercepted the F-35 without their knowledge. However, that is pure speculation and is not backed up by any evidence. Did the F-35 have radar reflectors? It is common for stealth aircraft to carry radar deflectors during peacetime. Of course you do not want to show your enemy your true stealth capabilities.

When the KJ500 detected the F35, it can guide the J20 stealthfully close to the target and fire when it comes within range of the PL15. The KJ500 provides guidance for the missile until the missile is completely locked on the target.

If China can get their AEWC in position and enough J20s, US will not have any aerial tactical superiority close to Chinese shores. The PL15 missiles that J20 is equipped with out ranges any American missiles. If early warning radars can pick up F35s in reasonable amount of time, and data link is good, it’s possible that J20 can fire multiple missiles at F35s from 200km away. F35 does have a low radar profile and is stealthier but highly doubt it can evade Chinese aerial radars.

You can find several very brief documents released by China, which you may or may not take as reliable resources and a vague info from a small number of encounters, which doesn't say anything concrete. Nevertheless it apparently leads to conclusions like "J-20 can pick F-35 at will", so let's abandon stealth completely and use 50y old airframe design instead. Deep military analysis indeed. It completely misses tiny details such as stealth is not an on/off feature which enemy somehow completely disables by new technology. Improved detectors extend the detection range, but that applies to everything, so in example, F-35 would need to increase stand off distance to remain under detection/precise location threshold, enemy may deploy interceptors to actually find it, but F-15EX is completely exposed in far larger radius and can be attacked right away.
