My favorite thing you brought up was Alpha and Beta testing being a tool for smaller developers. It's downright shameful that multimillion dollar companies rely on the same tactics while charging premium prices. Entertainment companies abuse goodwill in ways that no other commercial products can. It's time we respect merit, not intentions.

Man, I'm all in on these videos! Could this be the birth of a new thoughtful, reasonable, commentary channel on games industry and culture? It feels like The Act Man channel, but from the point of view of someone that loves games but has other things going on in life, who can't grind a game 8hrs a day, just like most of us. I love how you add the name of the game whenever you show gameplay from that game, it helps for games that I can't recognize via gameplay, having not played them. It's a small detail, but attention to detail is a huge thing for making a high quality anything. The SA accent is also nice.

Its not that developers got lazy, first of all devs have literally no power in game studios anymore. The genre and ... of a game is picked by marketing and executives. Releasing the game is also done by marketing and executives, we know about almost all bugs you experience in game. It's just that we focus on bugs that format your entire pc and crash the game rather than a character glitching or t posing. We, devs are more frustrated about state of games than you, players. But unfortunately we can't do anything about it. Jason Schreier have a new book that will release soon which explain how things worked in Blizzard, for example one of the executives come from a cheese factory and when devs told him they need time he simply said create another assembly line like how he did in cheese factory and double the output. To them just watching a slide show of image on screen = a functional game ready to release so gamers can give them billions of dollar. Also if you become an experience dev you're going to get fired because new guy can work for much cheaper.

I'm glad to see someone talking about this here. I liked the video in general but that part of the video didn't feel right, it reminded me of some people saying that the VFX studios working for Marvel are "lazy" because the CGI looks bad, when in fact what is happening is that the VFX artists are overworked and underpaid, trying to meet a ridiculously short deadline while fearing the very real possibility of being laid off.

You've hit on everything I've been feeling about games for a while now. A lot of the unfinished games are because the Shareholders want their money now and they push the developers to get the game out as soon as possible to fatten their wallets. They don't care what state it's in. Most of the time you're basically buying into the equivalent of the Early Access version of a AAA game and these Shareholders know that their consumers will buy into that. Early Access is more for Indie Developers so they can get the funds and the feedback to help create their games. AAA Companies already have the funds they need. AAA companies have no excuse for putting out buggy half-baked messes. They have the funds and they have the developers, or well they used to have good developers, to create a game and ship it in a stable form. As I've said before, the AAA companies have been around so long and have grown too big so they have lost touch with reality and their consumer base. They can't handle criticism anymore because they've hired all these thin-skinned activists to cater and pander to a minority of the gaming consumer base. Because the Shareholders are so detached from their consumers they can't understand why their consumers are upset with their developers becoming heavy handed with their agendas instead of writing great narratives and fantastical stories. Indie games are doing so well because they are games created by small groups of gamers who were looking for something that hasn't been played yet. Game Designers for AAA companies used to be avid gamers too and loved what they are doing. Now it's just Paycheck to Paycheck and just another job for current AAA Devs. It's a stressful slog for them now. With time-windows and number crunches. AAA = In for the Money (EA, CAPCOM, UBISOFT, NINTENDO, ACTIVISION, etc) Indie Developers = In for the fun and enjoyment, and their consumer bases. (Stardew Valley's ConcernedApe, Palworld/Creativerse's Pocket Pair, HumanitZ's YoDubzz Studios) I think Game Companies have a shelf life and most of the AAA companies now have reached theirs. They are no longer True Game Developers and have regressed into Greedy Corporations in search for the almighty dollar. Not only do I believe they have a shelf like but they also have a size limit. If they grow to be too large of a company they lose a lot of creativity and care for their games because the consumers are no longer a priority for them. Their consumers take a backseat to their shareholders. Their egos have grown so large that they think we need them, but it is the other way around. Without us they don't get paid. Greed kills and Ubisoft is a prime example of this right now. Activision and Bethesda were almost in the same boat until they were bought out by Microsoft. And they still aren't doing so hot. I remember when the Big 3 B's, Blizzard, Bethesda, and Bioware, were great once. Now they are awful greedy shadows of what they used to be. To be fair, Bethesda stuff was always a buggy mess, lol. Sorry for the novel. Just this all hit so hard, right on point. I just hope everything happening right now is opening a lot of people's eyes and the message gets across to these greedy corporations that their consumers have had enough. Before things get even worse. I've wondered for a long time now that how long it was going to take for gamers to finally get fed up with all these shitty business models and lash out.

May I suggest you a topic? Games that were loved and well-received by fans but were discontinued/studios disbanded. I'm talking about Hi-Fi Rush and Days Gone situation, for example. These are bizarre and I still struggle to understand why this happened. They sold a lot of copies (HiFi Rush won best audio design at GOTY awards) and corpos still didn't find the need to continue. Meanwhile, Sony spent 400mil on Concord, and we all know how that ended.
@Amrai3 ай бұрын
Not sure of the validity of this rumour (can't even remember where I heard it), but apparently the Hi-Fi devs were told to make a live service game, and they refused. So they were shut down. On a happier note, they got bought by PUBG's KRAFTON, so they're not dead. I'm sure there's more stories like this that need to be told, it would be a great video!
@MrTomaat233 ай бұрын
@@Amrai And wasnt it the case for Days Gone that a Sony higher up said something like: If gamers wanted Days Gone 2 they should ve bought more copies. Like i don't think it was a flop, but it didnt earn enough for them. Similar for Kindom of Amalur: The Reckoning. It made a profit, but the team was disbanded because needed to make MOAR moneys!
@PeteC14713 ай бұрын
@MrTomaat23 it wasn't a higher up Sony person that said it as far as l know. Of course one could have repeated this remark. The gane's developer and director mentioned about it in an interview. He said he often gets asked why there wasn't a Days Gone 2? The conversation always goes along the lines of this. Why didn't you make Days Gone 2? I'm glad you liked it. Did you buy the game when it was released on day one? No l bought it in a sale. That's why there wasn't a Days Gone 2. Over time games will make money that cover the cost of the film or get the profits close to the estimated numbers. But companies aren't interested in eventually numbers. Had the game at launch hit the numbers TLOU, Ghost of Tsushima, Spider-Man hit there would have been a sequel. Microsoft are putting games on PS because the games will not make much on Xbox. Why pay $60 per game when you can play on Gamepass for a flat fee for ALL AAA games? Effectively the Gamepass subscribers are voting with their wallets and saying I won't pay these high prices. Yet they expect the very best of everything and same as what people that pay full price get. I want Days Gone 2, but will wait for it to be half price and cheap. Where is the incentive for Sony to make it?

Last comment, I promise: Metal Gear Solid is an example of a game series deeply entwined with political themes done right. In fact, the deep political themes are one of it's special ingredients, because it doesn't force those views on the player, it tackles politics in a non-preachy way, and Focuses on geopolitics. When we players say we don't like politics in games, for the most part, that's not what ewe mean. We mean we don't want dumb culture war themes in our games. Culture war is to politics what olives are to pizza: insignificant waste that most don't care about, but somehow never goes away.

I'd love to stop supporting all those publishers who force their studios to puke out games riddled with the array of issues you mentioned in your video, and I'm doing it - for the most part. There are still occasional AA or AAA studios that somehow manage to pull through against all odds, surprisingly belonging to the likes of ATVI, EA or even Ubisoft. While I've almost entirely given up on Ubisoft by now, I'll be still supporting the German studio Blue Byte with their Anno games, which so far have been consinstently phenomenal. I think these city building games are mostly unscathed, because the main target audience are dedicated PC players rather than the broad casual crowd targeted by Assassin's Creed, CoD, sports games etc. And yes, guys, please actively look for Indie games and support their developers! There has definitely been a surge of absolutely fantastic releases over the past couple of years.

We can all agree that making the public feel represented is crucial when it comes to reach more and more people with your product, whether it's a youtube video or a videogame. And it's kind of funny, or paradoxical if you like, that this is one of the many problems AAA games are having, but nevertheless, a big one. We can't feel empathy for games that are pushing political agendas down our throats, and much less feel sorry for the people responsible for such crappy games. We can, however, feel empathy for a guy who has a full time job, a family, and tries to squeeze his loving hobby into his life. To be fair to AAA devs on the buggy messes they release, they do lack qualified devs. Dice for example lost key people, after Battlefield V they apperantly had no one that understood the Frost engine properly left on staff (leading to the mess of the next game) and this is not isolated to Dice/EA. Ubisoft is appearntly in a similar situation, they have driven out the old school talent and are now having to outsource critical parts of their games to get them made. These companies are hollowed husks of what they used to be. Blizzard, Dice, Ubisoft and more are already walking corpses attempting to create products that appeal to the culture that they created internally and lacking the talent and vision to innovate or appeal to the mass market.

Your videos are top tier. You have everything: editing, intelligent comments, great voice, good looks, nice pacing! Keep doing what you love and forget nit picks who give you anal advice like this topic is done already. Just pump out what's in your heart, man.

I had a conversation with someone i worked with recently about a game series I was super passionate about that I got a half sleeve tattoo dedicated to it. They asked me if i was going to buy the next game since ive bought every main game since the first one in 2007. I said with a deep sigh i said that i had no trust in the company that makes the games i once loved as a teen which is why i will not support them anymore. Like another game series that i started playing at a very young age in 1999, that does not invest the insane amount of money that they earn back into their games. Trust in the product has fallen so low that die hard fans no longer want part of something that gave them so much joy. (the games were AC and Pokemon Gold)
