I’m 40. My dad got his hands on one when I was 16. It’s absolutely iconic in my mind alone. It sat for a couple decades needing some alignment work. That’s fixed. Now it’s sitting in storage with all the body panels removed and primed waiting for the paint job to get finished. I’m trying to find someone trustworthy to finish it as a present to my 72 year old father so he can drive it and enjoy it like he should. His “little grey car”.

I had a 1987 BMW M6 in the late 1990s. Such a stylish car. Deltron stage 3 black, Ronal rims, lowered 3/4 of an inch. That front air dam coupled with the rear tail fin just made it so sharp looking in profile. Hell, from all angles. Wish I put a turbo or supercharger on it. Even had a fridge between the back seats.

I've always loved the E24 ( though only with Euro bumpers - I live in the EU ). My Dad has an E30 manual coupe since new. It's his daily driver still ( closing in on 320,000 km ). He put Bilsteins on it almost immediately. In 39 years of ownership, it only let him down once ( a coolant hose burst ). It sails through its annual roadworthiness test. It rusted around the rear wheel arches, so he had those replaced. It's so solididly built. When you close the doors they feel way more solid than any modern car I've been in. Great to see this young guy's enthusiasm for his ride !

I find it strange for high-end cars like these not to have it. Can you cobble together a system off a salvage car to put in these?

Years ago I had an '83 633csi with the 5 speed. I bought it from a doctor who was meticulous about maintenance. I think it had about 80,000 miles on it when I bought it (around 2002) and was in pristine condition. To this day it is the best driving car I have ever owned. Sadly, about 6 months into owning it, someone turned left in front of me and the car was totaled. The damage was not catastrophic but the cost to repair, difficulty in finding parts and the low value of the car caused it to be written off. I searched for several months for another 6 series but every one I found was on its third or more owner and wasn't maintained the way a car like these need to be and would have meant basically taking on a project. I still miss that car and if I ever stumble across a nice one, I will have a hard time passing it by.

The best looking race car was the gold and black Jim Richards JPS 635csi that ran around Australian racetracks in the mid 80s, prior to the E30 M3 taking on the racing role. Gold (chrome look) sponsor stickers and gold BBS rims against the chrome window trims and gloss black paint- it looked magic. The theme carried on to the E30, but with less chrome didn’t have the impact that it did on the 635. These were the teenage dream cars amongst many of my friends, but not many came to Australia in RHD form. I’ve seen a few getting around on historic rego. One was LHD. I guess the RHD market being so small, and with much of it located in places where the climate promotes rust, it’s probably easier to find a good clean LHD one these days.

Of course, my E90 is fairly easy to work on, but there's much more stuff to break. I'd bet the E90 is easier than the latest cars though. A big potential issue with these 5 and 6 series is rust. It can sneak up on you unseen and by the time you find it requires some work. The sunroof drains can be a cause. He has the comfort seats but the optional M6 sport seats are much nicer. If this is a NA spec car It puts out about 186hp/200+lb ft torque. The last year models may have come with the 208bhp higher compression engine from the e34 535. The final drive is 3.24:1 and .80 5th gear. It you swap an e30 3.74:1 lsd it makes things more interesting and raises the rpm by about 250 at highway speeds making 5th better for passing. Looks nice with the 17 BBS style wheels. The e24 was introduced in about 1977 based on the e12 5 series. When the e28 was introduced the platform was changed and it received the 3.2. Then updated to the 3.4 in 1985 with Motronic ecu and ABS. In Europe they first 635 was shared with the infamous M535I e12 then updated with the e28 engine and platform. They were sold up to 89/90 depending on market. Production was shut down during the summer for retooling. So a car could be an 85 or 86 depending on when it was made.

Love BMW from this era, unlike today. Enjoy it, from England.
