For one thing, taxes. Canada has the highest airport user fees in the world and the airlines are not allowed to disclose or show this in it’s pricing. At one point, Toronto held the distinction of the highest landing fees in the world costing airlines 10x more than landing the same aircraft in Chicago. For that $170 the airline collects for a ticket from the island to the mainland, more than half that will be airport fees, security fees and various other taxes.

Don’t forget about the general lack of competition in the Canadian market. In the US, if I want to go cross-country to Los Angeles, I can choose between American, United, Delta, Spirit, Frontier, Southwest, or Alaska, but if I want to fly from Toronto to Vancouver, my only choices are Air Canada and Westjet (or Flair, but their network is limited like Sun Country in the states). Air Canada pretty much dominates the market, and with that comes the power to set prices.
@hynes06213 жыл бұрын
@@mariochegini7789 not entirely correct. AC will get competition from WJ on any route worth flying. So while this is small competition it’s still competition and AC is not fixing higher prices as you say. The main reason is that the majority of Cdn flying is east west. In the US you can pretty much fly in any direction and fill an airplane. That’s creates economies of scale. Hence their lower prices and more airlines willing to jump,in and compete.
@humphryshan94943 жыл бұрын
Canada's population is also smaller and the country is less densely populated than than the US or Europe so many routes have lower demands which forces airlines to increase prices

I've actually been on a shorter Air Canada flight from YYJ; their old service to CLM & SEA. Air Canada (AirBC), Alaska(Horizon) and San Juan Air all operated a YYJ-CLM-SEA at one point or another on various equipment ranging from Cessna 402s (San Juan), EMB110 (San Juan), DHC6 (Air BC), Metroliner (Horizon), DHC8-200 (Horizon) & Do328(Horizon). CLM was a customs/immigration stop, took 10 mins, re-board, and you'd arrive at SEA as a domestic flight; but you could book it separately (and did on at least one occasion) YYJ is a very interesting airport; rarely do you see the mix of general light-aviation and jet traffic like you do at YYJ. When I was learning to fly, isn't wasn't unusual to be "#2 to the 727 / DC9 / 737 on final", or watch CPAir 737-200s doing pilot training. Also, the 7000' runway is a tad on the short side, and you'd watch a (back in the 80s) fully loaded 727 for YYZ takeoff on a hot summer day; use pretty much every foot. Also, YYJ does get wide-body traffic, up until a couple of years ago the YYJ-YYZ flight was on a rouge 763, and if you go far enough back there was even WardAir 747-100s operating YYC-YYJ-HNL.

Because some people think BC Ferries are too slow. Also, you forgot Seair. There will never be a fixed link between the BC Mainland and Vancouver Island anywhere near Victoria or Nanaimo. A fixed link would be much more feasible if it started up near Campbell River. As well, being an Islander myself, I do not consider it reasonable for me to pay more than $30 at the farebox to drive my vehicle aboard a BC Ferry. BC Ferries is part of our highway system, so the lion's share of its operating costs need to be paid for by our provincial taxes.

The only time I would spring for a flight to the island is if it were a connecting flight, or a more tourist-focused flight not meant to actually transport but to really see the sights. In my opinion, when you account for all the messing around with airport security and layovers, taking the ferry is not only a quick affair but a beautiful one. Not only is it a fun little novelty to drive your car aboard the ferry, but it is also a very hassle free experience. Up on the sun deck, always pick the spot against the wall on the forward most portion of the deck. There will be little to no wind and you'll be able to see the beautiful ocean and coastline. The trip flies by and it's just generally a wonderful experience. Also, for those of you who are interested in boats and how they operate, being in a large truck that is first in line after a departure means you are first off the boat and get to see the bow open its doors, all the harbor operations, etc. It is a real neat experience.

They built three aluminum ones in the 1990's. Using jet type propulsion. They didnt work. To save weight they had to red-line undersized engines which broke down frequently. They hit floating logs and had to slow down for significant portions due to wake problems. They should have converted them to conventional propellor propulsion, they would have been good ferries that way because they had a lot of capacity for their weight. But it was politicized. Built by NDP, the following Liberals wanted to banish them. So they sold them off for pennies in the dollar. You forgot to mention the Washington State Ferry that runs From Anacortes to Victoria and is frequently cheaper depending on the exchange rate. Plan your trip right and fuel up south of the border and it's almost always cheaper than BC Ferries.

That's really dumb. Regardless of the flight segment lengths, some will always be the shortest.

The government is a giant pansy - no balls to stand up for what is clearly the obvious choice - a submerged floating tunnel. Norway is building at least 2 in the next 10 years and its population is the size of BC. Its not about money - we have the skills required, but weak governments. 15 billion for a bridge, yes - but a floating tunnel is FAR cheaper.
@TheOwenMajor3 жыл бұрын
The proposed floating tunnels in Norway are even close to the same distance(Nor are they built). Max 2km compared to 50km. How is that floating tunnel going to fare when a mega container ship plows into one of the pontoons? 50km of tunnel being flooded is going to kill a lot of people.
@ghostrider-be9ek3 жыл бұрын
@@TheOwenMajor clearly we should stop building bridges and tunnels then - as there is too much risk. How many major ship strikes have there been in Vancouver on the Lions Gate bridge the last 80 years?
@TheOwenMajor3 жыл бұрын
@@ghostrider-be9ek Most bridges aren't floating, nor are they submerged. None have stuck Lions Gate bridge... Because the pillars aren't in the water, the span goes from shore the shore. But also talking about bridges, the support pillars are almost always massive chunks of concrete, a bit different then a floating pontoon. Also if a bridge collapses you have 500 meters of dead people, compared to a 50km long tunnel of dead people.
@ghostrider-be9ek3 жыл бұрын
@@TheOwenMajor same with boats, you would not have 50km worth of open tunnel, there would be water tight fixtures in place that close sections off - also the size of the pontoons would be enormous and would require an aircraft carrier to destroy and even they - because they are somewhat mobile, instead of a solid fix, the pontoons are flexible and can absorb large impacts
@TheOwenMajor3 жыл бұрын
@@ghostrider-be9ek I mean this all seems really great then. Do you have any examples of a project this size? I'm being sarcastic. The Norway example designs max out at around 2km, and the longest floating bridge(Much simple) is 2.3 km long(And in a lake) The longest bridge over water in the world is only 27 km long. You are not only talking about the longest bridge in the world by a fair margin, but also one of an untested design. Yeah, we are going to stay with the ferries.

The problem with the stupid ferrys are they have no problem making you wait for hours and ride for hours but you cant smoke or drink or do anything without some crybaby crying

Since there are so many islands between Vancouver and Vancouver island, why doesn’t the government just build a bridge
@kyleenglot91843 жыл бұрын
It's only possible to do this in the northern area of Vancouver Island. That means you'd have to drive north of Vancouver for about 3-4 hours before you'd be able to cross over. And then for those living in Nanaimo or Victoria you have to waste at least 2 hours driving time from the north just to reach Nanaimo and then an additionaly 2 hours to arrive in Victoria. It's not possible to build bridges to Southern Vancouver Island which would be much more convenient as that's where Victoria and Nanaimo are situated. However there's about a 35-40 km distance from tsawwassen to the first set of islands (Galiano and Maine Island). The straight of Georgia is deep, super prone to seismic activity, it gets very windy too so bad that even the ferries sometimes have to cancel sailings because of how rough it can get. Time wise and money wise it makes a lot more sense to just take the ferry crossing or a flight from Vancouver airport.

Air Canada and WestJet use identical aircraft and charge identical fares to fly identical routes. These similarities provide more grounds for the two airlines to merge. A merger has been the inevitable outcome since WS followed AC and purchased the 787, and AC followed WS and purchased the 737 MAX. A restructured the Canadian airline industry will emerge as a result of the financially disastrous consequences of Covid-19.
