Has your average speed on the bike dropped along with the temperature? We can all feel a bit slow and sluggish cycling in the winter, but WHY? Is it because we have to wear more cycling clothing or because road conditions are worse? Or is there more to it? Alex and Ollie explain why your cycling speed rapidly decreases as soon as the winter hits.

On Zwift, not a bit. In fact, I found that I may even be slower in summer, living where it is arid and I don't change my bike setup, because I lose watts to heat in summer that I don't in winter. On a mild winter day last month, I realized at the end of a 325 watt 20 minute interval that I was only barely sweating. For that same effort in six months, I could expect to be well and truly soaked with a higher heart rate to match.

It's horrible. No mudguards, no tire changes, no extra baggage. I do have lots of winter clothing. It's the air density that is making me 30% slower.

You just have to forget about speed in winter really. The main thing is to maintain your fitness and enjoy yourself. Here in Sweden, winter means studded tyres with low pressure and epic rolling resistance. I'd love to see how a set of Schwalbe Marathon Winter Plus at 30psi (my faster studded tyre) compare to a normal winter or all season tyre. But it doesn't matter. I'm still getting the miles and hours in. I enjoy it, I feel fitter, healthier and more relaxed after I've been out. And the last couple of days, I've even had the chance to cycle on a large frozen lake, which has been a real treat.

There is a positive to winter riding you touched on but maybe didn't fully realise. Riding in bulky winter kit with mudguards etc maybe slower but the the added air and tyre resistance should help your fitness increase in time for summer. Every cloud etc...

I waited until 10:30 but it's important that you bought up air density. It's the same reason why the engines on our Mustangs run so well in the cold. However, tires just don't stick 😢

This is why I switch to the fat bike when riding in a Canadian winter. It's slower which saves on the wind chill so I can push harder without being discouraged by the wind. It's also way more stable on snow and ice. That said it's warmed up t0 -31c here in Calgary currently so Zwift is is again today

My winter rides in Montreal, Canada are 10% up to 50% slower then my summer rides. This makes me think of cyclocross where sometimes we just have speed limits if we do not want to crash on ice . Also we re particularly reputed for our destroyed roads, our tarmac being more unpredictable then gravel ...

Of course I'm slower in winter. Cold air is denser than warm air. Part of your energy goes to just staying warm. And 360+ studs in a 29x2.1 inch tire, 25 pounds pressure or less, and bumpy ice and snow really tend to slow a person down. On the positive side, you do a lot more work in the same amount of time, so the disadvantage can in one way be an advantage.
@user-pe2jw2fj5d

There might be one thing to take into consideration: during the low winter-temperatures your muscles are not only dealing with the business of propelling you forward, but they also have to do the work of keeping you warm. Your body needs to use some of its energy on heating instead of propelling. And (for me personally) ist just nicer in summer or spring: the views are nicer to look at and the mood in general is more uplifted.
@cruachan1191

Harder (for me anyway!) to get going in winter too. The cold air means your body is working harder to maintain temperature so I'm out of breath quicker and it takes longer to get in to the groove compared to summer.

I think most of us will always be slower in the winter. I live in Rome, so the weather isn't that bad compared to UK or Norway where I used to live. But there is a bit more mud, leaves, small branches and crap on the road that slow me down. And even here I do have warmer clothing on. So those things like that is gonna slow me down a little bit. But not as much as it did when I lived in Bergen, Norway.

There is no winter on this video. This is spring/autumn weather. In the winter there is ice, snow, studded tyres, darkness and temperatures a lot below zero. The cycling speeds are much slower in the winter. Air resistance is usually not something to be concerned about. Rather you think if you still have gears because your Di2 is frozen dead. 😀

Cool video. I am late commenting, so I won't be noticed, but.... Wind, as mentioned, could be net zero. If you ride loops, it should even out. Y'all mentioned in your Mt Lemmon video that altitude ruins ftp. Colder air is effectively lower altitude. 10° f change in temp ~ 2% change in pressure. Little back of the napkin calculation says that a 70° change in temperature could be equivalent to a 4000 ft or 1200 m difference in altitude. So your threshold in winter at the same fitness level is much higher. You also don't have to fight the effects of heat as you cook much more efficiently. I was a decent collegiate runner and net net over medium distance I was fastest at about 40 f.

I'm definitely slower during the winter on purpose. My winter bike is heavier than my summer bike. It has aggressive tires that can grip the road better. The winter air here in the foothills of Colorado in the winter , on cold days ( with 300 days of sunshine, the cold days are mainly in Jan -March), are thick, however, really only the diehard riders are out at that time so the back roads are quieter. The main roads are somewhat dangerous.

I’m definitely slower in the winter. The multiple feet of snow is probably a minor factor…

Was Alex really in better shape, or was he pushing harder? The proof would be in the HR comparison between efforts. Also,it depends on the cooling efficiency of summer vs. winter kit. In a hot humid environment one is less efficient than in drier air. Winter kit could be less efficient due to keeping moisture and heat in. Hopefully the winter kit keeps you warm and dry, but not too warm.

i accounted for the power in the calculations. However, but efforts were similar. 290 and 295w in winter

Why does anyone care about average speed?? Unless you’re racing of course? You’re out in nature, getting exercise and getting fitter. Maybe you don’t go so far… but that just means more exercise and bike time right?.
