❤❤❤❤ I cried with this movie, when Anna finds out who Marnie is . I was raised by my grandmother too, so the story touched my heart. LOVE IT

When Studio Ghibli releases their movies in North America for the first time, I try to go out of my way to go to the premier. I saw Marnie when it premiered in North America premier in May 2015.

This movie is not meant to be fully understood on a first viewing. Some of the plot points can be made to make sense if you make certain assumptions. For example, the events at the silo originally took place years ago between Marnie and her boyfriend. When Anna experiences them she is taking the place of that boyfriend who Marnie eventually marries (and is therefore Anna's grandfather). Then there is the time Marnie said that Anna disappeared for a while. The reason was that when Anna started thinking about life with her hosts to answer Marnie's question about them, she temporarily took her mind off of Marnie. But the connection only exists when Anna is thinking about Marnie or the marsh house. The apology from Marnie and the acceptance by Anna at their last meeting was exactly what Marnie as grandmother wanted to resolve with her daughter and granddaughter.

Yeah this is definitely one of the Studio Ghibli movies I want to to rewatch the most. Even while editing I realized some details that I completely missed or didn't understand because I didn't know the ending.

That'd make sense as well! I thought she was a ghost trying to make up for "leaving her behind"

This is definitely one of those "watch at least twice" films which come along so rarely, yet the Japanese and Studio Ghibli in particular seem to be very good at making them. Another one is "From Up On Poppy Hill" and so is "Your Name."

This one and both of the 2 others you mentioned are all in my top 10 favorite anime movies I've watched so far and I definitely need to watch them again! The only one I've seen twice so far is Spirited Away and I 100% can appreciate it even more after seeing it twice.

@@TheGeekheads I watched Spirited Away countless times, whereas with most movies I watch once and then don't feel the need to watch again. But Ghibli movies tend to have so many little details that are easy to miss the first or even multiple times while watching, but which add to the enjoyment when noticed. A particular story style which I enjoy is the "crisis happens at the start and the rest is how things came right" story. Frances Hodgsen Burnett was particularly good at those, and "Sarah Crewe/A Little Princess" and "The Secret Garden" are two stories in that style. One live-action Japanese film which I enjoyed is "Our Little Sister." You may want to watch it too. Three adult sisters who are living together discover that they have a younger half-sister after their estranged father dies. At his funeral, they realise that their half-sister isn't experiencing love from her family, even though her physical needs are being met. They invite her to come and live with them. The rest of the story is how they all cope with the changes, and is a brilliant no-true-antagonist tale. Speaking of details and re-watching, I don't know how many times I re-watched Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind before I suddenly noticed the (in hindsight, obvious) link between the final image of the opening credits and the first look we get of Nausicaä only seconds later.

Our little sister sounds interesting, I'll check it out. Thanks for the recommendation :) And yeah, I'll definitely have to watch Nausicaä again as well!
