It should be noted that taking GLA every day or using Ketkonazole (keeping it in the hair for at least 10 minutes) will prevent any follicle degradation, and thus prevent hair loss. This isn't a treatment, it is a preventative measure that will leave you with lush, colourful hair at 90 years old.

Actually the main culprit (although clearly not the only one) for the androgenic alopecia (in further text the AA, as I can't be bothered honestly), is the specific androgen, not androgens. It's called *5-alpha-dehydroxitestosterone* , that past your puberty, serves no purpose in your body, other than to shrink the hair follicles on the scalp of your head, and if it gets elevated enough (above 6% in the plasma If I recall well) also to increase your chance of the prostate cancer well over tenfold. In fact if the people with highly elevated 5 alpha DHT do manage to not develop a prostate cancer, they will still almost certainly suffer from the *benign prostatic hyperplasia*, which is quite unpleasant for a grown up person as it causes urinary incontinence, among other things. However, if one is lucky enough to be born in that 30-50% of the people who do not exhibit a lot of 5 alpha DHT receptors on their hair folicles, elevated 5 alpha DHT still won't cause them to go bald, but it may, and often will still cause prostate issues. Other factors proven to greatly exacerbate and hasten the AA are: lack of *iron* , and systemic *inflammation*, and particularly the recurrent or chronic head scalp inflammation. Which has to do with the Prostaglandine mentioned in the video, that is the mean of the said inflammation on the molecular level. Currently there are two biological therapies which are extremely promising, so much so that in the following decade they may actually make baldness a thing long lost and forgotten in the past. One being the use of the growth factors (such as those from your own blood, the technique is called *PRP therapy* ) and activated (multipotent) *stem cells*. The latter have been successfully used to regrow completely hair in mice affected with AA, both by using only the native (mice) cells and the combination of mice and human stem cells. So once that method is perfected, tested and patented, it will be possible to actually completely reverse baldness, which will depend 90% on the depth of your pocket. Meanwhile, people can use the 5 alpha DHT blockers ( *5 alpha reductase inhibitors* ) , although the topical ones and the non-synthetic ones might be far "healthier" to use than the Finasteride, which though, no matter what they tell you also does not "cause depression", loss of "manliness" (whatever that is) nor irreversible effects (except in less than 1% of users). For some people, these make for a sufficient solution that efficiently arrests the AA, and may even regrow some hair, providing the follicles are still functional. The downside of such therapy is the dependency, as it may needed to be taken at a constant pace for life.

I'm 28 and at stage 3 vertex balding (started losing my hair at 16) and it really sucks, luckily though my genetics gave me a wicked full beard. The plan is to keep it short, look after it and once it goes too thin, shave the rest off but keep the facial hair.
@blacksunapocalypse

Found that literally my first year in the military, my hair started to thin. I began to shave it that same year. It's ten years later and I'm still shaving it, and it's clearly gotten a looooot thinner. Luckily I have a good shaped head for it. In the end, it's just us fearing how we look to others. It's a good test to show how much we care about things that really shouldn't matter to us in the long run. Are you otherwise living a pretty good life?

Maybe I'm a bit narcissistic but I just cant accept my hair loss and shave it all off like people say. My hair started thinning since I was 18, now Im 21 and i have an M shape and its thinner on top. Ive done a lot of reasearch and have seen some improvement and regrowth. And while the improvement has been minimal and has taken a long time I wont give up.

I'm 22 and already have a receding hairline, it really got me down at first but now it seems like just an inconvenience. I'd love to keep my hair because its much more interesting to look at than being bald but i think its stupid to worry about something I can't change. Plus I think most potential partners are initially attracted to confidence and overall looks than just hair.

Well said. I started around 21-22 as well, hated it at first but finally shaved it all off and got more compliments than ever. Embracing it really is one of the best ways of dealing with it. Although it's a shame we live in such a judgemental shallow society :/

+Gonk You're not embracing your baldness if you're shaving off all your remaining hair, that's just vanity and/or fear of ageing in my opinion. I had to shave my head because I had an autoimmune disease (alopecia areata) that left me with more than 20 bald spots varying is size from about the size of a dime to the size of a baseball (google some pictures, you can't really describe how awful a bad case of alopecia areata looks). After about a year my hair gradually started returning so I stopped shaving my head, and a few years later I started having normal male-pattern hair loss (androgenic alopecia), but I'm really happy with the normal looking baldness and I'm not going to shave my head for looking the same as 50% of the older male population.

+Gonk I'm just under 30, and I've been noticeably balding since my early 20s. It bothered me at first, but over time I came to accept and even embrace it as part of my look; I started shaving my head a few years ago, and like Ace Conrad said, I started getting more positive reactions for having a "bold" look. Plus, it's really low maintenance and feels nice in hot weather.

It is always better to look on the bright side of things. You need less shampoo, the hair dries faster and you have a good excuse to wear any kind of cap or hat at any time. As we cannot really do something about it, why feel bad about it. We also have only two arms which is often impractical still no one tries to attach extra arms.

Apparently the drug propecia / finasteride works, but it's expensive, around US$ 50 a month. You have to start using it while you are young and still have a full head of hair, because the effect it has is small. And you have to take it every day for the rest of your life. Is hair loss worth US$ 600 in pills a year to try to slow down or stop?

Yeah, it can happen to women with high testosterone, and it's still classed as male pattern baldness, this is just because hair folicals on certain places on your head had less blood supply. I'd not worry about it though it's rare to happen to women. I once dated a woman who shaved her head, I was still very attracted to her.
