A friend of mine who’s from the US was talking about how America is great and how much freedom they have and my best friend looked at him right in the eyes and asked him, dead serious “what freedom do you have that we don’t?”(Sweden). When he heard that he didn’t know what to answer. He later told us that during his entire life in the US(moved to Sweden at 27) he had been told that basically they were the only country with freedom. His school never taught about anything outside of the US. The fact that my friend actually stood up and questioned him about his statement gave him a reality check. Saw another comment saying “a powerful nation doesn’t mean a great nation” and I totally agree

I will tell you my own experience which hopefully I was born and raised in Philippines and came to the US in 2003 to pursue Masters right after finishing my undergraduate in Philippines. I first landed in Chicago. After picking me up from O'Hare, my uncle took me to Chicago Downtown. We went to this place by the Field's Museum and Planetarium on the shores of Lake Michigan, from where you can see the entire Chicago skyline. It was a stunning view and the first thought that crossed my mind was "Wow... USA is even more beautiful then what I have seen in movies." Fast Forward 12 years to today. I have moved to California and I still think US is better than what you see in the movies. I have had an opportunity to visit many countries and I can assure you I will never change my statement. Going back to the first day in Chicago, I walked down the Magnificent Mile on Michigan Avenue. Chicago was spotlessly clean and beautiful. A few days later I was trying to get to University of Illinois at Chicago. I remember I had to switch a train at the Jackson station. I had no clue. I asked a gentleman who was about to get in the train if I should be getting on the same train to go to UIC. He got out, missed that train and explained which train I should be taking. I am not saying every experience is so wonderful and everything is plain awesome. If you go to New York, you might have an opposite experience. New York or San Francisco downtown are nearly not as clean as Chicago but they are still awesome. Like any other country in the world, US has its own set of problems but what many people don't realize is how good they have it in this country. Some people get so spoiled that even little issues will tick them off and they go off on a tangential rant. You might encounter certain issues that make you feel uncomfortable or less hopeful, but that's few and far between (at least in my experience). A good percentage of people here are very helpful and they won't care about the color of your skin. Sure, you will always run across some looney here and there but that's a part of life and my guess is its way less here than in any other country. In conclusion, I will tell you my feelings. This is hands-down the greatest country on the earth despite some of it's shortcomings - and its the people of this country that make it so great - people who come from around the world and all walks of life. You will come across amazing opportunities, awesome people, incredible innovation, gorgeous places and a lot more.

How can the greatness of a country be measured? Certainly not according to the parameters mentioned or measured against the (other) countries mentioned. Infant mortality is defined as the death of babies under the age of one year, but some of the differences between countries can be explained by a difference in how we count. Is a baby born weighing less than a pound and after only 21 weeks’ gestation actually “born?” In some countries, the answer is no, and those births would be counted as stillbirths. In the United States, on the other hand, despite these premature babies’ relatively low odds of survival, they would be considered born-thus counting toward the country’s infant mortality rates.

After watching why other countries treat their workers better then USA videos, I knew USA sucked big time at this BUT... As an Englishman in England my mind was blown wide open. Watching these videos make me love my country more then I once did, we get sick leave pay and 28 paid days vacation/holidays and our min wage increases every tax year in the UK as in 1st April every year example 2019 £8.21ph, 2020 £8.72ph, 2021 £8.91 pH, 2022 £9.50 pH these wage increases are UK min wage increases per year every tax year April. Now USA citizens when did your bare minimum federal wage $7.25ph increase.... When? Research states it's been $7.25ph since 2009 and not increased since 😥 compare that to the UK's min wage increase I stated in my post... So sad for USA workers 😥 oh and that federal min wage of $7.25ph in the UK would only be £5.56 and not the current UK min wage of £9.50 or in USA $12.40 and for part time in the UK well, England you still get 28 days vacation/holidays and still get paid sick leave. So if you work full or part time you still get 28 days paid vacation/holidays days.

What's there to be sad about? We robbed the Natives of their land and slaughtered them, systematically denied blacks civil rights and the right to vote (not to mention lynch them en masse), invaded countries under the guise of "anti-communism" or "spreading democracy" spending trillions of dollars, bombed and destabilized the Middle East all for oil and nation building, and are one of the major contributors to greenhouse gases. This is all while our citizens get off scot free, never having to endure any hardship. Maybe this is all karma coming back to bite us in the ass. Maybe we deserve this.

He already had a family. When he graduated, he got a professional job and we lived better. Then my parent became american citizens. My dad taught me about hard work. I went off to school to study engineering and so on. We have never been affected by poverty or crime and our rights have always been protected. The police has always been respectful. Exactly! The quote “ask not what your country can do for you...” is so accurate for America. The amount of poverty and children going to school hungry is appalling. So many freedoms in America - you are free to fall behind the rest of the world in your education, free to go hungry, and free to die if you can’t afford a private education, three nutritious meals a day or good health care. But if you can’t afford those things, America has a job waiting for you in the military, where you are free to die or be injured, after which you will be free to look for someone who will help you get back to normal life, but don’t count on America to help you with that.

Christine Dee Yes but you can also Excel more than anyone so it’s a win some you lose some
@arbynChief6174 жыл бұрын
Christine Dee its not the government’s job to provide for you. This is not a nanny state. The State’s job is to protect its people and give them safety. The government’s job is to be the referee, not the commissioner. How is poverty even bad here? We have lower poverty rates than most of Europe, Americans are on average richer, earn higher wages, have higher income, and have one of the best economies in the world. The amount of starvation in the US is probably one if the lowesr in the world, its certainly lower than those in Europe and elsewhere. When you have an excess of freedoms and personal liberty, people are able to make choices for themselves. Sometimes that means slacking off in some statistics. People can choose for themselves, they don’t need some overlord doing it for themselves like you are suggesting, which is quite frankly dystopian. You have the right to pursue a greater education but you have no right to any services. Not everyone wants to go to college. And you do realize that you have an abundance of opportunities in the States, some of it provided by people acting in goodwill and charity. Why do you think social mobility is prevalent here? Why do so many rich and famous people come from poor backgrounds? You make it here in America, you make it big. Its about making good life choices and decisions, you don’t need the government holding your hand for you and giving you welfare, keeping you stuck in the same spot forever. No wonder not that many new products, businesses, and innovation come from places outside the US. “And don’t count on America to do that” what a load of horse shit. We are among the most charitable nations in the world, with lots of local communities and organizations that help people out.

No disrespect but I think a lot of Americans are still buying into "America is the greatest country" sentiment. It's funny because it doesn't actually mean anything. Greatest in what? What makes a country the greatest? We are all different and there is no one universal answer to that question. Everybody has different needs and views on what makes a country great for living. The notion that any country is THE GREATEST is just delusional and makes you sound stupid. If you traveled a lot, lived in different countries for some time, experienced different cultures and people and then say: "America is the greatest place to live FOR ME. It checks all the boxes that I have for quality of living, prosperity and happiness", i can understand that. You have an informed opinion, more power to you. But if you live your whole life in one country, don't travel, don't read, don't know anything about what really happens around the world except what you see through mass media and then have the audacity to say "My country is the greatest country in the world", don't be surprised that people treat you like an idiot. That goes for all nationalities, not just Americans.

Qin Fujiwara hm that was very obvious point. Statistics change every day, statistics never stay the same. In which may I also add that the economy was different 7 years ago. This is also a movie lol. On a real note tho fuck this country! :)

I'm an American living as an expat in Europe, but still believe in the values that our country was established on. One thing although makes me so ashamed is the way freedom of speech is treated - Don't extradite Julian Assange!

The US has the highest median income, adjusted for purchasing power parity (healthcare cost, education cost, etc.), of any country in the world. Geopolitically, culturally, financially, economically, militarily, technologically, the United States is the world's most influential country, and its citizens enjoy unprecedented protections of freedom of speech, religion, and self-defense. T he United States played a pivotal role in protecting the world from fascism, and played the decisive role in protecting the world from communism. The world has seen - by any objective metric - unprecedentedly high levels of prosperity and peace, because America has taken on the mantle of world leadership. These are simple facts that Europoors can't cope with.

I’m really curious what period he’s talking about when he starts talking about how America used to be. Though omitting that detail was probably intentional
