I live in a very uninhibited area of Missouri's largest national forest. Pairs of A10s fly on the deck sorties over my house almost every day from Whiteman AFB. I'm conservative so I don't know whether to paint an American flag, or a TARGET on my roof! They are low enough to see their faces in the cockpits. In whisper mode they can sneak up on you at speed. Wide open, they shake the hills! 🇺🇸 Beautiful!

Hey, I have hiked, camped, and canoed through much of the Mark Twain National Forest and know the area well. That was back in the latter third of the last century when the prominent citizens of that area had at least one old vehicle up on blocks in the front yard and old fridges and washing machines "adorning" their front porches, some of the truly friendliest folks one old outdoorsman could ever hope to meet, ..... for the most part. ..... [Plus, I could push my little TR-3 to its limits on all the hills and hairpin turns on "A" road all the way down to the Current, 3 Rivers, or Jack's Fork areas]! I dearly miss those days of being in part of "God's Country" for some relaxation and good fishing in some of the clear water rivers/streams.

The U.S. military has a long history of blurring or outright misnaming aircraft. I agree that the A-7 is designed for attack, without trying to be a 'Fat Amy'. The A-12 was certainly not an attack aircraft, nor was the F-117 a fighter. The A-4 was more of a fighter than an attack plane (but USN would not use as such) and the A-7 had both guns and missiles. Don't even get me started on 'P' (patrol) designations.

I place the A-10's on top of my list for close air/ground support attack aircraft, testimony from my 3 sons, who fought in the Iraq and Afghanistan campaigns throughout those years, allowing them to come back home. One son said their FOB was being overrun by the enemy, they are outnumbered and out gun, 2 A-10's and an Apache came in, less that 30 minutes repelled the enemy, and the FOB was saved. What I became very upset about and folks needs to know, when the FOB came under heavy attack, assets were sent to help allied FOBs in the area first, when the commander put out a call, "broken arrow", similar to the code we use in law enforcement known as 999. This was the main reason I advised my sons to come home and not relist.

Can you imagine an F 35 taking the kind of punishment that an A 10 can absorb? Given that it was designed specifically to do just that, the "Nose in the air" armchair critics of the A 10 actually think there's a replacement to the A 10 that currently exists! While visiting the Air museum in Utah near Hill Air Force base, I got to see the A 10 that was hit by hundreds of 20mm or bigger rounds and returned to base safely. All the holes were present, and patched. According to one of the Air Force Pilots on site, this plane, patches and all, could be back in action with minimal repairs beyond the holes in the tail and fuselage. To all the naysayers, talk to actual pilots that have flown it; they'll explain to you why it is the best air to ground jet on any battlefield. Compare it the the Soviet version; it's a joke to even begin to compare the two.

I worked this aircraft for over 20 years starting in 1978. It has gone through a lot of improvements. it has all the bugs worked out of it and is easy to repair on the front line. Simple is better at times of war. The new aircraft’s the Air Force wants are way too expensive. The F-15 is another one we should invest in. Drones are the future and we need ways to defeat them.

The F-35 will never replace the A-10 as a close air support aircraft, it is too vulnerable. The A-10 is respected by troops on the ground. The F-35 is too fast, has too short of a loitering time, and only has a 25 mm weapon. The A-10 has a 30mm weapon, and several weapon stations under its wings. The A-10 can be a bomb or missile truck. The F-35 must carry its missiles or bombs internally to remain a stealth aircraft.

@@Rotorhead1651 There should be a current aircraft builder capable of resurrecting the design. The only real issue with the A-10 is it's vulnerability to modern anti aircraft missiles. True that flying very low makes the A-10 harder to hit so upgrades might include better threat detection capability and countermeasures. This might involve thinking outside the box as it relates to typical counter measures. When you have air superiority, the A-10 is still a formidable weapon. I wouldn't change the basic design much outside of its defensive capabilities. It is interesting to hear that it has recently been used in Syria, Gaza and Yemen. But these places don't have robust air defenses. It would be interesting to know if they have encountered any systems like the S-300 or S-400 and how they dealt with it. I suspect that as long as they flew ground hugging missions, they probably can evade the radar to an extent. The A-10 with its "sneak up on you" nature and the roar of the roar of the gun has an intimidation factor that is hard to beat!

How about redesign the A10 into a new aircraft. There is nothing out there in the US Military inventory that is close enough or proven to work like the A10. It would be like they did when they replaced the 1911 45 for the M92 9mm. Yes it replaced it. But was not even a close match. Yes 9mm is a good round when you pair it with a hollow point. The military uses FMJ rounds. Not even close.

tell that to all the ally forces it killed accidentally (technical and situational awareness issues due to lack of visibility, commonly observed in the A-10). Also it's definitely not cheap (cheap to maintain but not to operate), nor indestructible, all it takes is one or two anti air missiles (remember, it's not stealth, and has to stay close to ground due to low speed and altitude limitations) and it starts falling, that titanium tub doesn't protect you against gravity. Also very unreliable compared to the new F15EX. I agree the stick is really cool and American, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't even remotely rank high compared to all the other stuff the air force has in its arsenal.

It's not a fighter jet; It's a fighter bomber in the shape of a tank killer, a killing machine against enemy infantry, anything and everything on the ground. That's not to say that it can't shoot down enemy fighters, given that it can carry pretty much anything any US fighter can carry and then some. It doesn't have the speed that a fourth or fifth generation fighter, but it's virtually indestructible.

I live under a MOA and a Army Vet and until last year had A-10s screaming over the house loosening my roofing shingles and detassling the Corn. They flew so low you could see the pilots helmets chasing each other around (they always flew in pairs). Now the Ft Wayne ANG reverted back to F-16's after a couple of decades of the A-10's. I'll miss them...

Can you imagine an airplane like the A-10 in WW2, where Hans-Ulrich Rudel, a German ground-attack pilot (Rudel had given input to the development of the A-10 Thunderbolt II in 1976), with his Junkers Ju 87 "Stuka" dive bomber was credited with the destruction of: - 519 tanks, - one battleship, - one cruiser, - 70 landing craft and - 150 artillery emplacements. In addition Rudel claimed nine aerial victories (becoming a near double Ace pilot) and additionally the destruction of more than 800 vehicles, such as supply trucks, personnel carrier, etc. He flew 2,530 ground-attack missions exclusively on the Eastern Front during his 4 years of service as dive bomber pilot.

The USAF had Scaled Composites design a replacement airframe for the A-10. Rutan called it the Aries. The Aries was capable of being operated remotely or it could be operated by a pilot. All that was needed to convert from a UAV to a piloted aircraft was to flip a few switches. It is still a mystery to me why the USAF spent the money to have such research done and then fail to take advantage of it. Could it be that the USAF simply does not like being involved in ground support?

There is no NEW, A-10 Wart Hog! I worked on the A-10 avionics for over 13 years. According to the wing commander at Whiteman AFNB in 2018, it is going to be retired this year 2024. Just before the first Gulf war, the A-10 was going to be replaced by the F-16. After that war a lot of the A-10's were taken out of the bone yard and put back in service. It will probably be replaced by the F-16 as it was in. In 1991, the A-10 took Top Gun in Gunsmoke competition at Nellis AFB. It beat every other fighter in the inventory in every category, except the F-16, it won the high altitude bombing. I think it is really stupid to retire it.

Anyone thinking the F35 can replace this plane and do better. Should this again this plane is build to take a beating and built around a massive 30mm auto cannon (the size of a small car) . The F35 was no built like a flying tank to take hits, it was built for hiding and seeking , with a very expensive stealth coating that as not so durable .also the engines on the A10 are ment for dusty areas. The F35 would be a stupid idea to try and replace a plane that became a legion in its class.

It was about 1998 when my scout troop was having annual training up at Ft Lewis Washington. My vehicle had set up under the only cover around, a big Oak Tree. With the nets and assorted tree branches. Under a big Oak in pretty much a field of grass. We heard a plane. An A-10 pops up over the trees and heads south only to suddenly bank and orbit our tree. We're supposed to have A-10 support. I call and say tell him we're good guys. Our grid was accurate to within 10 meters by map. Less than 30 seconds later he waggles his wings and disappears. You have no idea how much I love and want that plane to stay forever. For it's job as an aircraft I just don't see anything replacing it. But what is that SU-25 doing in there?
