When air support is needed on the battlefield, nothing inspires both confidence in friendly infantry and chilling terror in enemy infantry like the silhouette of an A-10 Warthog!
It’s not for nothing that this attack aircraft has become a true icon of American military aviation, bursting into all sorts of halls of fame with both wings spread!
But can Warthog remain relevant for the foreseeable future, given the active development of drones and artificial intelligence technology?

I was a crew chief from 2008-2014 mainly working in the A/R shop. It’s a great plane and was fairly simple to maintain. Our fleet mostly consisted of 1977-1978 models with a couple of 1980 models as the newest we had. We would sometimes have difficulty removing the rudder carriage pedals, having the throttle quadrant rigged just right, and locating parts sometimes. After they added air vents near the pilots knees, we really hated rudder pedal carriages. We enjoyed the 1980 models the best as they had a few extra access panels making maintenance easier on certain task. Our planes would sometimes get shot up in Afghanistan, but always came back. I enjoyed my time with them, before transitioning to the C130. Interesting fact, we needed a new canopy one time. New ones are no longer made, so we had one shipped from the boneyard. It looked identical, but was slightly different. We had to modify it for it to work. Come to find out, every canopy was handmade for each aircraft made. Everything else on the plane was an easy swap.

That's the problem. Army troops want it, but Air Force doesn't want to keep it they're trying to retire it but they've been unable to (at least fully) bcoz Congress intervened. The Air Force doesn't even have a plan to replace the A-10 in the CAS role, clearly showing they don't really care about supporting Army grunts. And this is exactly why the Army should be allowed its own fleet of fixed wing air force, such as having the A-10, AC-130, C-130, F-16, CV-22, just as how the Navy and Marine Corps can and do have their own air force to support their own missions. The Army was d*mb to agree to the Key West Agreement.

The F-35 isn’t anything more than a stealth SAM sight finder. It’ll fly in undetected, or at least looking like a bumble bee, find the SAM sites. Then it’ll send the grid coordinates to all the other planes loitering just outside the range of the SAM’s. At that time 82 million anti radar missiles will be fired off by those other planes. That’s the F-35 in a nutshell. The raptor will be the top fighter plane for an insanely long ass time. So, once the F-22 gains air superiority, then the A-10 will be flares in flares out cleaning up everything on the ground

The problem with trying to retire the A10 is we still need an actual CAS bird. No the other aircraft we fly are *not* CAS, at best an F35 can do standoff ATG fires. A high velocity fork can bring down an F35, you cannot do anything close with it to enemy ground contacts. If you retire the A10, then task engineers with designing the next modern CAS platform... You just end up with the A10 again.

No. You end up with a new series of drones for Close Air Support for the future. The problem is that the A-10 is extremely susceptible to shoulder launched anti-aircraft missiles. The US did not fact those in Iraq or Afghanistan. If they did there would not be a single A-10 left. I saw an analysis of using A-10's in Ukraine where he Russian Troops have shoulder launched anti-aircraft missiles and that analysis projected a maximum life of an A-10 at 4-5 days of use, with 50% shot down in the 1st 2 days. Those A-10's came back with cypress tree tops stuck in the leading edge of wings and engine collins. Truly TOUGH BIRDS! The cracks in the WINGS were from pilots yanking G'S that I wouldnt want to try to take. That's why TWIN TAIL VERTICAL STABILIZERS were placed on the A-10, to push the nose hard when banking out of the attack run, placing that TITANIUM BELLY against any possible enemy return fire.

@@nadjasunflower1387 Air Force was born from the Army but ever since then it is an independent service branch completely separate from the Army. And ever since then it has been taking or trying to take away Army's fixed wing toys and even got the Army to agree on weight limit of helicopters etc. The problem is that the Air Force isn't interested in supporting Army ground operations (at least that's what the big bosses think). Air Force leaders have been trying to retire this plane for a long time now without even coming up with a replacement plane to fulfil the CAS role, but Congress has been stopping them from doing so. When the Air Force took the Army's aviation assets away in the late 40s, they promised they're gonna provide CAS and whatever support needed. But they didn't even build a dedicated CAS plane until several years into Vietnam, and until the Army developed its own attack helo (AH-1 Cobra) which the Air Force sort of saw it as Army overstepping into Air Force's territory. The Army should have its own fleet of air force, flying aircraft such as A-10, AC-130, C-130, F-16, CV-22, to support its own operations. If the Navy and Marine Corps can have their own air force to support their own missions, then so should the Army.

I would only replace the A-10 with an A-20 Razorback built upon an A-10 chassis, with the following improvements 1. Sweep back wings and tail for supersonic flight speed 2. Upgraded engines for more thus 5000 to 8000 lbs more 3. Longer wings to increase payload 4. Most versions should have two pilots a weapons specialist to take the load off the lead pilot 5. Two of those Avenger Gatling guns with reduced rate of fire to enable the aircraft to do more damage to targets and stay on station longer 6. The larger A-20 should be built around the 2 Gatling guns, with a wider fuselage to carry more fuel 7. Finally the A-20 should carry 8 air to air missiles instead of 4. 😮

What I still fail to understand is why this plane was given to the Air Force instead of the Marines? Even now it should be handed over to the Marines for the 20years remaining in its service. A wonderful ground attack platform! Note, that gun uses standard shells in peace, in wartime there is a more powerful shell that is used to punch through newer Tank armor, don't be fooled with the claim the gun is useless, that's what they want you to think!

The A-10 is the only ground attack aircraft that can use so many different weapons to do what it does best, and that is to save Ground Pounders that are under attack by enemy forces. The sound of that gun also brings great hope to those same troops that know they may ultimately make it home. An added plus is that the pilots know the aircraft will protect them and bring them home when so many other aircraft can't say the same. This allows them to press the attack and do major damage to the enemy. I'm an Army vet, and I love studying this aircraft. It was great when they were stationed in Battle Creek, MI, 25 miles from my home.

The A-10 is a beast and if you ask any pilot who flew it they’ll tell you “Plane is a beast” them and the troops on the ground are the ones that kept this plane in service.

Air Force says their spreadsheets say the A10 didn't live up to its king tank killer status. With the A-111 taking that trophy followed by the F15E. If my memory serves correctly most A10 tank kills were NOT gun kills. The only thing the A10 excelled at was presence/loiter time and suppression. It's true that there is likely nothing better at loitering and suppression in counter insurgency missions. But the A10 isn't going to survive the front lines if it's pitted against a near pier. They'll be shot out of the sky quicker than the Migs in Ukraine. They are likely the easiest to hit attack plane when it comes to anti-air. As for attacking tanks. It would make NO sense to send one of these after a tank. Right now we are working on long distance fiber optic connections to connect FPV drone to the larger surveillance drones. That way the surveillance drone is far enough away from the tank that jammers don't impact it and the attack drone will get it's signal from fiber optic and therefore can't be jammed. Kind of like a tow missile but instead of 2 wires that can short out if they touch water the fiber cable doesn't have that issue. The air force knew the A10 was just going to cost them money. Again just think about it. There were less than 70 A-111 Advarks used in desert storm. Around 150 A-10s. Also about 50 F-15E. So you got this big ass flying cannon and it's probably just going to use guided bombs anyways.

@jaycooper2812
@jaycooper2812 13 күн бұрын
One of the main reasons that the A-10 is not being sent to Ukraine is that it is very vulnerable to hand held SAM systems and is also too slow to escape modern fighters. The reason that the A-10 is such an effective ground attack aircraft is that it has a top speed of just over 420 miles per hour. While it is a very effective aircraft for what it is designed to do a World War 2 P-51 Mustang is fast enough to catch it and shoot it down. The main reason it was so effective in Iraq and Afghanistan is that the Air Force had complete air superiority and there were no enemy aircraft left to shoot it down.

@@jaycooper2812 Also the exact reason why it's so important in the conflicts we have. It's a specialty aircraft, that is affordable to operate and maintain, and incredibly effective at the CAS role. I think the bigger reason why it's not being used in the current conflict has more to do with us not wanting the technology falling into enemy hands.

Answer. The A-10 needs to be able to operate in a battle space where you have already achieved total air supremacy and where you have already destroyed all of your opponent's ground to air defences. Plus, drones are now quickly replacing ground attack aircraft.
